Neither a model’s open weights nor a provider’s privacy promise alone determines whether your AI use is private. The deciding factors are where inference runs, who can access prompts and logs, whether data is retained or used for training, and how the system is secured. For sensitive or high-volume work, self-hosting an open-weight model can keep inference data inside your own environment; for uneven workloads or difficult reasoning, a business API may be more practical if its contract, retention settings, and region meet your requirements. Many organizations need both, plus a route that avoids sending sensitive details to any model.

Should I run an open-source LLM locally or use a ChatGPT or Claude API?

Choose among three architectures, not just “open” and “closed”: a model you run yourself, an open-weight model operated by an API provider, or a proprietary model API. The second option is still hosted: the provider can see prompts at inference time, and its terms determine retention and access. Self-hosting offers the most direct control over the data path, but makes your organization responsible for securing the model and infrastructure.

Question Self-hosted open-weight model Hosted open-model API Proprietary hosted API
Who can see prompts? You and people or systems operating your infrastructure, subject to your configuration. The hosting provider, under its terms. The model vendor or cloud reseller, under its terms.
Can the provider train on prompts? No model vendor processes prompts if inference truly stays within your environment. Your own operators may still access logs. Depends on the host’s policy and contract. Business APIs generally do not train on customer data by default; opt-in terms can differ.
Who controls retention? You configure application logs, model-serving logs, and storage. The provider’s policy and service settings. The provider’s policy, endpoint, and any approved zero-retention terms.
What evidence supports an audit? Your architecture, access controls, network rules, configuration, and logs. Provider terms and available assurance reports. Provider terms, DPA, assurance reports, and any compliance tooling.
Main trade-off Greater control, with more operational and supply-chain responsibility. Convenient access to open models, without privacy inherited from the weights. Access to frontier capability and managed controls, while prompts leave your environment.

“Open weights” means trained parameters are available to download and run. It does not mean the training data is available for inspection. In the Open Source Initiative’s 2024 definition, open-source AI requires sufficient information—including training data or an equivalent—to reproduce the system. Many commonly called open models, including Llama and many Mistral and Qwen releases, are open-weight rather than fully open-source.

Self-hosted or local AI usually means running a downloaded checkpoint on a laptop, an on-premises GPU, a private cloud (VPC), or an air-gapped server—not training a foundation model from scratch. If a third party hosts the same checkpoint behind an API, the prompt still travels to that provider. Weights determine what can be deployed; deployment determines who handles the data.

Is a local LLM more private than an API?

It can be, if prompts and outputs stay on infrastructure you control and you manage access, logging, and network connections accordingly. “Local” is a deployment property, not a guarantee that an application never sends telemetry or that stored conversations are protected.

An air-gapped machine offers the clearest separation from outside services, but it is not the only self-hosted option. A model can run on a connected laptop, an on-premises server, or in your cloud account. Those choices expose different parts of the system to network, cloud, and administrator access. A Hugging Face survey reported by Stealth Cloud in 2024 found that only 4% of open-model users ran models in a fully air-gapped local configuration; most “local” deployments should not be assumed to be air-gapped.

What changes when inference stays inside your environment?

  • The model vendor is removed from the inference data path, and the model itself does not send prompts to its publisher.
  • You can pin a checkpoint, apply your own retention schedule, and keep logs in your security information and event management (SIEM) system.
  • You generally remove the model vendor as a processor for that inference and the associated international transfer for that hop.
  • You take responsibility for protecting servers, users, logs, model files, runtime software, and any retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) data sources.

Local inference does not automatically make an organization GDPR-compliant. A lawful basis, access control, appropriate retention, and—where required—a data protection impact assessment remain your responsibility. Nor does it cure excessive permissions in shared folders: a private model can still disclose information to a user who should not have access to it.

Can a local AI app still send data elsewhere?

Yes. A local model interface may contact a model registry to download weights, check for updates, or use optional cloud features. The model can also be reachable over a local network, while chat history is saved to disk. An audit of five local tools published by local-llm.net on 8 April 2026, based on testing in March 2026 on Ubuntu 24.04, illustrates why it helps to assess the whole application rather than the inference engine alone.

Tool and version in the audit Reported network and storage behavior Security detail to check
Ollama 0.6.x No telemetry reported; local inference; contacts registry.ollama.ai for model pulls and optional update checks. Newer releases add optional cloud models and web search. Set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 to disable cloud features, bind to localhost, and remember that port 11434 has no built-in authentication.
LM Studio 0.3.x Local inference; opt-out analytics reported for app version, operating system, GPU, and model names, not prompt content observed in the audit; downloads through Hugging Face. Review analytics settings and model-download exposure.
Jan 1.x No telemetry found; conversations stored as local JSON files. Protect conversation files and backups.
GPT4All 3.x Opt-in research telemetry reported for lengths and hardware, not prompt content. Check whether the research telemetry option is enabled.
Open WebUI No app telemetry reported; SQLite stores users’ conversations. Privacy depends on HTTPS, administrator access to chats, and protection of the database.

These findings are specific to the versions and audit conditions stated; they are not a guarantee about later releases or every configuration. For any local setup, document whether downloads and updates are permitted, restrict network exposure, encrypt disks, and decide who can read chat files and backups.

Does OpenAI train on my API data?

OpenAI’s API data policy, as quoted by Developers Digest and verified on 18 October 2026, says that API data is not used to train or improve models unless the customer explicitly opts in. The same compilation quotes the enterprise privacy page: “By default, we do not use your business data for training our models.” That is a training-use rule, not a statement that the provider cannot see prompts during inference.

“As of March 1, 2023, data sent to the OpenAI API is not used to train or improve OpenAI models (unless you explicitly opt in to share data with us).”

The distinction between the API Platform and a personal ChatGPT account matters. Consumer products and business APIs or Enterprise workspaces can have different data terms and controls. Staff using personal AI accounts for work is a potential leak even when the organization has approved a separate business service.

What does the API retain?

Developers Digest’s 18 October 2026 compilation quotes OpenAI’s default abuse-monitoring policy as retaining logs for up to 30 days, unless longer retention is required by law or reasonably necessary to protect services or another party from harm. The enterprise privacy page is quoted as saying that, except for specified endpoints and features, API inputs and outputs may be retained for up to 30 days to provide services and identify abuse, then removed unless retention is legally required.

“By default, abuse monitoring logs are generated for all API feature usage and retained for up to 30 days, unless longer retention is required by law, or is reasonably necessary to protect our services or any third party from harm.”

OpenAI offers Zero Data Retention (ZDR) or Modified Abuse Monitoring to eligible customers after approval. ZDR is not a universal switch: features such as Assistants, Threads, Files, vector stores, batches, fine-tuning, evaluations, and agents may store application state. The compilation also notes that images flagged for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) may be retained for manual review even under ZDR. Non-US residency requires approval for abuse-monitoring controls. Regional processing is listed for the US, EU (EEA and Switzerland), and UAE; additional storage-only regions include Australia, Canada, Japan, India, Singapore, South Korea, and the UK. Eligible models released on or after 5 March 2026 have a reported 10% uplift for data-residency endpoints. These terms and availability can change, so verify endpoint-specific conditions before implementation.

Is an open model more private than a proprietary API?

Not by itself. A hosted open-model API is still a hosted API: the provider sees prompts at inference time and sets the retention, review, and training terms. Open weights make it possible to remove the model host from the data path by running the model yourself; they do not confer that privacy on every service built around the weights.

A Mozilla Foundation survey of 15 major open-model API providers, reported by Stealth Cloud in 2024, found that 9 retained prompts and responses for at least 30 days, 6 reserved the right to use prompt data for service improvement, 4 permitted human review of customer prompts, and only 3 provided contractual guarantees against training-data use. These findings are a dated survey, not a description of every provider today; they show why buyers should review the particular host’s contract rather than infer terms from a model’s name.

Hosted services also differ in jurisdiction, region selection, abuse monitoring, and feature-specific storage. For example, Amazon Bedrock retention is configured per region, and some models require retention as a condition of access. A service that offers an open checkpoint can therefore be less suitable for sensitive data than a well-contracted proprietary API—or more suitable, if its terms and deployment meet the organization’s requirements. Compare the actual processing arrangement, not the label.

What happens to data sent to an AI model?

At minimum, a hosted service must receive the prompt to generate a response. Depending on the product and endpoint, it may also process attached files, conversation history, retrieved documents, tool outputs, or feedback. Training, abuse monitoring, application-state storage, and human review are separate policy questions; “not used for training” answers only one of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Zero data retention changes whether the provider keeps a copy after processing for its own operational purposes; it does not make the prompt invisible to the provider. As Morse explained on 19 October 2026, the data still crosses to the provider and is visible at inference time. ZDR is not the default at OpenAI, Anthropic, or Azure, and does not necessarily cover every product feature.

Feedback controls can create a separate retention path. Anthropic’s commercial API is described as not training on inputs and outputs by default, with standard commercial API prompts and outputs deleted within 30 days unless flagged for a usage-policy violation. Zero retention is available by sales agreement for Messages and Token Counting APIs. However, thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can store a conversation for up to five years and may be used for training unless owners disable it. Since 9 June 2026, reported “Covered Models,” including Fable 5 / 5.1 and Mythos 5 / 5.1, require 30-day retention for safety work even for ZDR customers unless otherwise authorized.

Google’s paid Gemini API is described as not using data for training, with abuse monitoring of up to 55 days. For customers requiring zero retention, the Gemini Developer API has been directed toward Vertex AI. Vertex AI is described as not training on data without prior permission, with cache retention up to 24 hours and EU regions available. Microsoft Learn, accessed 27 October 2026, says prompts, completions, embeddings, and training data for models sold by Azure, including Azure OpenAI, are not available to other customers or model providers and are not used to train generative AI foundation models without permission or instruction. Microsoft’s Copilot prompts and Graph data are also described as not used to train foundation models; Anthropic models inside Copilot are an exception to the EU Data Boundary.

Is DeepSeek GDPR compliant?

For personal data of EU residents, the hosted DeepSeek API presents a high-risk transfer according to the available October 2026 analysis. Its processing is described as based in mainland China, for which the EU has no adequacy decision; its privacy policy allows disclosures to authorities where legally required. This is not a blanket finding about every use of every DeepSeek model, but it is a strong reason not to send EU personal data to the hosted API without a fully documented legal and security assessment.

Italy’s Garante restricted processing of Italian users’ data, and Berlin’s regulator asked Apple and Google to review the app. DeepSeek’s downloadable weights can instead run locally, avoiding the transfer to the hosted DeepSeek service. That does not remove the organization’s other GDPR obligations or settle questions about model origin, output behavior, checkpoint security, or licensing.

The 2025 DeepSeek database exposure reported by Wiz involved an unauthenticated ClickHouse database containing chat logs and API keys in the hosted backend. It was not an incident involving the downloadable weights. Self-hosting avoids that particular hosted-backend exposure, but it replaces it with responsibility for securing your own serving environment.

How do GDPR, UK rules, and sector requirements affect the choice?

Self-hosting can remove a model provider as a processor for inference and avoid the Chapter V transfer for that processing hop. A cloud-hosted API can still be operated in a GDPR-compliant way, but the organization must manage the legal relationship, including processor terms, transfer safeguards, residency, and any transfer impact assessment required for the arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PromptQuorum risk matrix updated 19 October 2026 ranked the hosted DeepSeek API highest; first-party Claude API and default OpenAI API medium-high, with Data Privacy Framework (DPF) or Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) plus a transfer impact assessment; Claude through EU regions on Bedrock or Vertex and OpenAI EU Projects medium; and locally run Llama 4 Scout or Qwen3.8-27B lowest. This is a comparative risk assessment, not a substitute for the facts and legal analysis of a specific deployment.

EU and UK considerations

For Article 9 special-category data, legal privilege, banking secrecy, or German professional secrecy under §203, avoiding a disclosure to a third-party processor may weigh heavily in favor of local inference. Under the UK GDPR, personal data does not have to be stored in the UK as a general rule; transfers are controlled through adequacy and safeguards, according to the ICO guidance summarized by Imobisoft on 16 October 2026. NHS England guidance allows cloud hosting of NHS data subject to location rules and senior sign-off for hosting outside the UK. PRA SS2/21 takes a risk-based approach to data location. The UK Government Security Classifications Policy calls for secured dedicated physical infrastructure for SECRET information. Client confidentiality terms may be stricter than statute.

US sector rules and the EU AI Act

HIPAA and GLBA obligations apply regardless of where the model runs. If a provider or cloud host processes protected health information, a business associate agreement (BAA) is needed with that processor; operating your own model on a cloud host does not make the host irrelevant. OpenAI’s API Platform is reported to offer a HIPAA BAA, but the exact service configuration and covered features still need review.

Under the EU AI Act, a company can become a system “provider” if it develops or has a system developed and puts it into service under its own name. The staff AI-literacy duty under Article 4 has applied since 2 February 2025. The transparency duty under Article 50(1) for systems interacting directly with people has applied since 2 August 2026, according to the cited 2026 account. Running a model privately does not by itself remove these obligations.

Microsoft’s Azure offerings include reported controls such as data separation from other customers and model providers, and non-use for foundation-model training without permission. ChatGPT Enterprise is reported to offer AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2 or later, SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001, SAML single sign-on, SCIM provisioning, administrator retention controls, a Compliance API, optional Enterprise Key Management, contractual no-training terms, and a HIPAA BAA. Those controls can support governance, but encryption key management for stored data does not change the fact that prompts leave the customer’s network for inference.

What security risks come with self-hosting open weights?

Self-hosting trades some provider risk for supply-chain and runtime responsibility. A model file is a large, often opaque artifact, and some formats can execute code when loaded. PyTorch’s security policy is summarized as: “PyTorch models are programs.” Prefer safer formats and verified sources, and treat model-serving software as production infrastructure.

Secure the checkpoint and runtime

  • Prefer the safetensors format; where supported, set use_safetensors=True and keep PyTorch’s weights_only=True.
  • Avoid loading pickle-based .bin, .pt, or .pkl files from untrusted sources. JFrog reported around 100 malicious models on Hugging Face in February 2024, including a pickle __reduce__ reverse-shell payload.
  • Do not enable trust_remote_code=True unless you have reviewed and accepted the custom code it runs.
  • Pin repository revisions, record SHA-256 hashes, scan artifacts, and verify OpenSSF or Sigstore signatures when the publisher provides them.
  • Track the actual supplier for community GGUF conversions, LoRA adapters, and merged checkpoints; they are not automatically covered by the original publisher’s security work.
  • Restrict inference servers to trusted networks. vLLM’s --api-key protects only some path prefixes, and llama.cpp warns against exposing its server or RPC interface to untrusted networks. Ollama has no built-in authentication on port 11434.

Plan for model behavior and permissions

Closed providers add moderation on their side, while an open-weight deployment provides the behavior in the checkpoint plus whatever safeguards you build. Fine-tuning can weaken alignment: Qi et al. (2023) showed that an aligned model could be jailbroken using as few as 10 adversarial examples, and benign fine-tuning can also degrade safety. Test prompt injection, cross-user leakage, and RAG permissions; do not treat safety tuning as a substitute for access control.

Read the exact model licence

Licences vary by checkpoint and can impose restrictions on commercial deployment or derivatives. The available data identifies Qwen3 weights as Apache 2.0 and DeepSeek-R1 as MIT; DeepSeek-V3 uses a separate DeepSeek Model License with use-based restrictions, including a military-use restriction that travels to derivatives. The Llama 4 Community License, effective 5 April 2025, includes a 700 million monthly active user threshold for a separate licence, “Built with Llama” attribution, derivative naming requirements, and an Acceptable Use Policy. The cited analysis also flags that for multimodal Llama 3.2 and Llama 4, section 1(a) rights are not granted to companies whose principal place of business is in the EU. Get legal review where those conditions matter. gpt-oss is identified as Apache 2.0; its 120B version is claimed to fit a single 80 GB GPU, and its 20B version within 16 GB.

How much hardware do local models need?

Memory requirements depend on parameter count, precision, quantization, context length, and serving overhead. The estimates below are practical sizing figures from the cited sources, not a guarantee that a particular model will fit or run at a useful speed on every machine.

Model scale or example Approximate memory guidance Source qualification
7–8B at 4-bit About 8 GB of GPU memory; a modern laptop may also run small models. Froxy Labs, 2026.
7B at 16-bit About 14 GB for weights alone, using roughly 2 bytes per parameter; 4-bit quantization cuts the weight footprint to about a quarter. Hugging Face documentation as cited by Innovix, 2026; total runtime memory can be higher.
30B-class About 24 GB VRAM as a stated minimum for local quality. PromptQuorum and LLM Configurator, 2026; not a guarantee for every 30B model or context length.
Qwen3.8-27B, quantized Reported to fit a 24 GB GPU. PromptQuorum, 2026.
70B-class Roughly 40 GB or more; another cited estimate specifies 48 GB+ for 70B local quality. Froxy Labs and LLM Configurator, 2026; requirements depend on quantization and serving setup.
Llama 4 Scout at 4-bit Roughly 55–60 GB. PromptQuorum, 2026.
gpt-oss-20b / gpt-oss-120b Claimed to fit within 16 GB / on a single 80 GB GPU, respectively. Model capability claims in the cited 2026 account; validate the exact checkpoint and runtime needs.
Very large enterprise systems A 70B-plus model may require multiple GPUs or A100-class hardware. Mistral Large 4 at 8-bit is estimated to need on the order of 1 TB of GPU memory for weights alone. iCentric, 2026; Mistral Large 4 was a preview announced 6 October 2026, with weights due by the end of October.

A 16-bit model uses approximately two bytes per parameter for weights before additional runtime memory, so parameter count is only a starting point. Longer context windows, concurrent requests, and the serving stack increase total demand. A laptop-sized model is therefore a different operational proposition from a departmental 70B deployment.

For context, NVIDIA’s DGX B200 specifications, as cited by Imobisoft in 2026, list 1,440 GB of GPU memory, up to about 14.3 kW of power, and a 10-rack-unit form factor. A fully built 8x H100 SXM5 node is estimated by LLM.co in 2026 at $250,000–$400,000 in hardware. These are data-center-scale options, not ordinary desktop upgrades.

Is self-hosting cheaper than a cloud API?

APIs usually fit low or bursty demand because customers pay for use rather than keeping a GPU ready. Self-hosting has a fixed hardware or GPU-hour cost, including idle time, plus the cost of engineering, patching, evaluation, and operations. It is more likely to pay off when workloads are steady and GPUs remain busy; token volume alone is not enough without accounting for model quality, concurrency, and staff time.

Cost reference Reported figure What it does—and does not—establish
Starter on-prem card RTX 4070 Ti-class hardware: about $500–$1,000; electricity about $5–$10 per month. PromptQuorum, 2026. It reports a typical 6–12 month break-even for medium-to-heavy use, APIs cheaper below 100K tokens/month, and on-prem cheaper above 1M tokens/month; these are scenario estimates, not universal thresholds.
Department-scale comparison About $119 per month local versus about $143 per month for GPT-4o at 1M tokens per day; RTX 4090 workstation about $2,590. LLM Configurator’s 24-month TCO preset; prices verified 1 March 2026 and hardware street price checked 6 July 2026. The preset reached break-even around month 20.
UK repetitive workloads Three-to-nine-month self-host break-even often reported for high-volume repetitive pipelines. iCentric, 2026; workload and operational assumptions are not specified as universal.
Enterprise API seats ChatGPT Enterprise reported at roughly $45–$75 per seat per month, midpoint near $60, with a reported minimum around 150 seats. LLM.co, 2026; reported bands, not an official OpenAI list price.
Large GPU infrastructure 8x H100 SXM5 node: about $250,000–$400,000 in hardware. LLM.co, 2026; hardware estimate, excluding operating and staffing costs.

For asynchronous work, batch pricing can change the comparison: Otium reported on 23 October 2026 that OpenAI Batch API and Anthropic Message Batches API cost 50% of standard rates for results delivered within 24 hours. Compare that option with a self-hosted system before buying hardware for jobs that do not need an immediate response.

Another large model option illustrates why launch status and licence need checking. Mistral Large 4 was previewed on 6 October 2026 at about one trillion parameters, with about 52 billion active; weights were expected by the end of October. Mistral described end-to-end European-law operation and intended private-cloud and on-premises deployment. At the time of Imobisoft’s article, the licence was not stated. The preview API price was cited at $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens before a launch discount. Confirm availability, terms, and final pricing before using those preview figures in a budget.

Are open models good enough for business tasks?

Often, for bounded tasks such as classification, tagging, structured extraction, catalog enrichment, summarization, and embeddings. For difficult multi-step reasoning or specialist work, a leading proprietary model may still be the better choice. The meaningful comparison is performance on your documents and failure cases, not a general leaderboard score.

Epoch AI’s 2026 assessment, as reported by Promatics on 18 October 2026, put the best open-weight models about four months behind leading closed models on average, with a larger gap on the hardest reasoning and coding tasks. A separate set of published MMLU results cited by LLM.co in 2026 listed Llama 3.3 70B at about 86.3%, Qwen 2.5 72B at about 86.8%, GPT-4o at 88.7%, and GPT-4 Turbo at 86.5%. LLM.co also cited about 88% HumanEval for Llama 3.3 70B. These benchmark figures do not predict accuracy on a particular company’s documents or workflow.

A practical pattern is to start with a smaller or local model for routine work, then escalate failures to a hosted frontier model only when the data is permitted to leave. vLLM offers an OpenAI-compatible API, which can make it possible for application code to call either a self-hosted model or a hosted API. Keep evaluations tied to your real task, model version, and failure tolerance.

How should I choose a hybrid architecture?

Use a gateway to enforce routing rules rather than relying on individual users to remember which model is approved. Classify data, map each class to permitted destinations, and log the routing decision without collecting more prompt content than necessary.

  1. Classify the information. Define categories such as public, internal, confidential, and regulated, and identify contractual or legal restrictions.
  2. Put a gateway in front of model access. Route by classification, user, and application. Record which destination handled a request and how the decision was made.
  3. Keep sensitive, high-volume, or offline tasks local. Consider self-hosted open weights through tools such as Ollama, vLLM, or llama.cpp, or an on-device option such as Foundry Local.
  4. Send permitted hard-reasoning tasks to a hosted model only under approved terms. Confirm the DPA, no-training terms, region, retention, and endpoint-specific exclusions.
  5. Use approved business suites for everyday drafting. Make account boundaries clear and block or discourage personal accounts for work information.
  6. Remove data before inference where possible. Redact sensitive fields, replace names with identifiers, or automate a matching step without an LLM.
  7. Evaluate the whole flow. Test model quality, prompt injection, RAG permissions, cross-user isolation, logs, and recovery when a provider or local model is unavailable.

Microsoft’s product family offers examples of different deployment locations: tenant-hosted Foundry models for scale, Foundry Local on Azure Local (preview) for disconnected on-premises Kubernetes, and on-device Foundry Local for laptop-bound data. A product’s “local” or “private” label is not a substitute for confirming actual network paths and service terms.

Decision checklist

  • Does a policy, contract, or regulator forbid sending this data outside your environment?
  • Would business terms plus ZDR satisfy privacy commitments, client requirements, and any DPIA?
  • Are HIPAA BAA, GLBA, CMMC, UK GDPR transfer analysis, or EU AI Act provider status relevant?
  • What is the expected workload now and in a year, and is it steady or bursty?
  • What accuracy is acceptable on your own documents and edge cases?
  • Who will patch the GPU stack, serving software, model files, and revisions?
  • How will you demonstrate to an auditor where each prompt went?
  • Have you reviewed the exact checkpoint licence rather than relying on the model family’s marketing description?
  • Have you tested prompt injection, cross-user leakage, and RAG permission enforcement?

As Cohere chief executive Aidan Gomez put it in a statement about the 5 October 2026 PwC–Cohere alliance: “Enterprises need AI that can deliver real capability without forcing them to give up control of their data.” In practice, control comes from the deployment, contract, and operating safeguards working together—not from the model’s label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own GPUs to have private AI?

No. A managed private-cloud or VPC deployment can keep the model within an organization’s cloud environment, though the cloud operator and its terms remain part of the trust boundary. On-device options can also run without a separate GPU server, with capability limited by the device and model.

Can I use a hosted API with confidential data if it has zero data retention?

Possibly, if your policy and contract allow that provider to process the data and the approved endpoint actually qualifies. ZDR limits persistence; it does not prevent the provider from receiving and processing the prompt, and feature-specific exclusions must be checked.

How can I switch between a local model and an API without rewriting my app?

An OpenAI-compatible serving interface such as the one offered by vLLM can let application code use a compatible local endpoint or a hosted API. Keep routing and access policy in a gateway so compatibility does not accidentally send restricted prompts to an unapproved destination.

Does using an open-weight model let me audit what it learned?

No. Downloadable parameters let you run the model, but generally do not reveal the training corpus in a way that enables reproduction or a full data audit. Check the specific model documentation and licence rather than assuming that “open” means fully open-source.
