You can start streaming on YouTube with a phone or a computer that has a webcam. Buy extra equipment only when it solves a real problem—such as unclear audio, a shaky shot, poor lighting, or an unreliable connection. If you want to broadcast uploaded videos continuously rather than stream live from a camera, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is a different option.
Choose equipment for the kind of stream you want to make
YouTube offers three practical routes: stream from a mobile device, use a computer webcam, or use an encoder for screen capture and a more involved production. Your subject and existing equipment determine what you need; there is no universal minimum-cost kit.
| Streaming route | What it needs | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | A phone with YouTube live access, a charged battery, and a suitable network connection | Mobile, informal, or single-camera broadcasts |
| Computer webcam | A computer with a webcam and internet connection | Simple desk-based talks or presentations |
| Encoder | Streaming software or a hardware encoder, plus the camera, microphone, or other sources you plan to use | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, external equipment, or switching between sources |
YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Start with what you own, then improve the weakest part of the setup.
What you need for each setup
Streaming from a phone
- Phone: It acts as both camera and streaming device. Decide whether to film in portrait or landscape before you go live.
- Power: Begin with a full charge. YouTube estimates that streaming can use about 1% of a phone battery per minute; actual use varies. For a longer broadcast, keep a charger or external battery pack available.
- Stable framing: A tripod or selfie stick can reduce camera shake. Handheld video is workable, but tiring to hold steady for long stretches.
- Audio: Move close to the phone’s microphone and reduce background noise. If the setting is noisy or the built-in microphone is not clear enough, consider an external microphone.
- Light: Face a window or use soft, even light. A white card or reflector can bounce light onto your face or subject.
- Chat and camera choice: The back camera can give you better visuals, while the front camera makes it easier to see yourself and chat. A second device can handle chat while the phone’s back camera records.
- Notifications: Prevent calls or alerts from interrupting the broadcast, and check that your mobile signal is suitable where you plan to stream.
Streaming with a computer webcam
The webcam route requires a computer with a webcam; a separate camera is not a prerequisite. Choose a quiet place, frame the shot, check that your face is well lit, and speak at a distance where your voice is clear. If the built-in microphone sounds poor, first try moving closer and reducing room noise; an external microphone is an optional upgrade.

YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming where possible. Check upload speed rather than relying on download speed: the connection must have enough outbound capacity for the stream you configure.
Using an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, or multiple sources
An encoder can be software running on a computer or a standalone hardware unit. It is useful when your stream needs to show gameplay or a computer screen, include overlays, use external audio or video hardware, or switch between multiple sources. YouTube’s examples of common gaming or casual equipment include an external microphone, webcam, and headphones. A green screen, multiple cameras and microphones, mixer, or hardware encoder may help with a particular production, but none is automatically required to start.

Improve the picture and sound before buying more gear
Make speech easy to hear
- Place the speaker near the microphone and speak toward it.
- Reduce nearby noise where possible: close a window, silence a fan, or move away from traffic and other people.
- Hard, bare surfaces can reflect sound. Soft materials such as cloth or pillows can reduce those reflections in the room.
- Listen to a test recording or unlisted stream with headphones. If speech is still difficult to understand, then consider a suitable external microphone.
Use steady framing and soft light
Stabilize a phone or camera with a tripod or mount if movement is distracting. Put the main light in front of, or slightly to the side of, the subject rather than relying on strong light from behind. YouTube Help notes that “Soft, even lighting will help your camera’s image sensor maintain detail in the brightest and darkest parts of the image.” Window light may be enough; add a soft light or reflector only if the image needs it.

Check the connection and encoder settings
Choose settings your upload connection can sustain
For an encoder stream, bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 recommended bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific settings, not a guarantee that any connection can carry them. Check YouTube’s current settings table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, run an upload-speed test, and test a representative stream before an important broadcast.
YouTube’s guidance for the RTMP workflow recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Use those settings where your encoder exposes them, and verify the stream preview and health indicators rather than assuming a configured stream is working well.

Leave room for network variation
YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streams when available and advises ensuring outbound bandwidth can support the stream bitrate. Where a backup stream is used, its stated rule of thumb is “Primary + Backup + 20%.” A speed test and a real test stream are more useful than treating a headline speed as a guarantee.
YouTube estimates mobile live streaming uses about 10 MB per minute. This is a planning estimate, not a fixed data rate; check the actual stream behavior and your mobile data plan, especially for a long broadcast.

Enable live streaming and run a preflight test
- Check eligibility and activation: Confirm that your channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. First-time activation can take time, so do not leave it until minutes before an event.
- Set up the chosen route: Open YouTube’s mobile or webcam workflow, or configure your encoder. If using an encoder, connect your intended sources and verify the selected camera and audio inputs.
- Check the scene: Confirm framing, orientation, lighting, microphone distance, room noise, and battery or power. Make sure the phone or camera is stable.
- Test the network and stream: Run an upload-speed test. For encoder streaming, use settings appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and watch YouTube’s stream health.
- Practice privately: Run an unlisted test or use practice mode if available. Include the same speaking, movement, screen changes, and other activity you expect during the real broadcast. Check the preview and listen for audio problems before going public.
Copyright and the kind of content you broadcast
Equipment does not determine whether you have the rights to show what is on screen or play in the background. Before going live, make sure you have permission to use any music, video, images, or other material in the broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable policies. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material is a different format from a camera-led live event; do not assume that owning streaming equipment grants rights to the content.
