Choose a format you can administer fairly
Before settling on an idea, consider these practical trade-offs:
- Entry friction: A single chat action is usually easier to explain than several steps or a multi-part submission.
- Participation: A prompt, vote, or shared goal gives viewers something to do together; a simple draw may be easier when the stream is busy.
- Cost and fulfillment: Include the prize, delivery, and any other expenses in your plan. Digital or experience-based rewards may avoid shipping, but still need clear terms.
- Clarity: Decide in advance who is eligible, when entries close, how a winner is chosen, and what happens if the winner cannot be reached.
- Rules and audience location: Platform policies and applicable local requirements can differ. Verify both for the promotion you plan to run.
Publish rules before the giveaway starts
For a YouTube livestream
YouTube’s contest rules make the creator responsible for the contest. Entry must be free, and contest mechanics must not manipulate views, likes, dislikes, or subscriptions. YouTube requires official rules addressing applicable disclosures, Community Guidelines, privacy, YouTube’s non-sponsor status, and the creator’s responsibility to conduct the contest and award prizes as described. Contests also cannot run through ad units. Read YouTube’s contest policies and guidelines and check applicable local law before launching.
For a Twitch livestream
Twitch puts responsibility on the promoter for legal compliance and all aspects of the promotion, including posting official rules, selecting winners, delivering prizes, expenses, and obtaining necessary permissions or approvals. Twitch requires the promoter to display or read this disclaimer: “This is a promotion by [Your Name]. Twitch’s Community Guidelines prohibit asking viewers for bank details in a giveaway context and prohibit viewership tampering. Do not request sensitive personal or financial information in public chat; consult the Twitch Community Guidelines.
For viewers’ privacy and a clear winner process
Collect only the information you genuinely need to contact and fulfill the prize for a winner. On YouTube, include the required privacy notice for contest data. Avoid asking entrants to post addresses, phone numbers, payment information, or other sensitive details in chat. Explain the selection method and how the winner will be contacted in your rules, then follow that process.
