The Hackster project was published on January 6, 2024, and describes five light modes plus a charging-current mismatch that builders need to address before assembling the battery circuit.
What the rechargeable lithophane RGB lamp is
The Hackster project by the account paulsb describes a rechargeable base intended to illuminate a 3D-printed lithophane shade. Its author also says the base could be used with another type of shade. The page is a maker build description; it does not establish that a branded, finished version is sold commercially. Read the Hackster project.
A lithophane is an image represented by varying thickness in a translucent printed surface. Light behind the print makes the image visible. The project leaves shade dimensions to the builder: create a shade from the selected image, then adapt its dimensions and opening to fit the base.

The author describes securing the electronics inside the base and insulating the LED pins with tape or heat-shrink tubing to avoid short circuits. These are project instructions, not independently validated safety guidance. Choose components and assembly practices appropriate to the exact battery and circuit you use.

Four printed base parts
The base design consists of the main base, an underside lid, a top disk that retains the shade, and a post that holds the disk and supports the LED. The shade can be generated using image-to-lithophane functionality in a slicer or a web-based tool, then printed. Confirm the shade opening and fit against your own base design before printing the final parts.
How the lamp’s controls and modes work
According to the Hackster project, the lamp starts in solid white mode. Pressing its control button cycles through five modes:

Three red-and-green flashes indicate that the changing-color mode has been selected. These behaviors describe the creator’s implementation, not a universal feature set for lithophane lamps.
Charging: resolve the battery and current mismatch
The project specifies a 3.7 V, 1000 mAh battery and a TP4056 board. Its author says the described board resistor configuration produces about 1000 mA of charging current and considers that too high for the battery in this build, recommending reducing the current to 500 mA. Treat those figures as project-specific: 1000 mA is the author’s stated current for that configuration, and 500 mA is the author’s recommendation for this battery, not a general rule for every lithium battery or charging board.

Before connecting a battery, check its manufacturer’s charging-current limits and verify that the charging board is configured to match. Do not assume a TP4056 board and a 1000 mAh battery are a compatible drop-in pair just because both appear in the project’s parts list. The project page does not independently establish electrical safety.
For the described build, the creator says to connect a USB-C lead and read the base indicator: red means charging and blue means charging is complete. The stated charging time is approximately two to three hours, depending on charger output. The author also says the lamp can be used while plugged in. These are the creator’s operating instructions and estimates, not independently measured specifications.

Rechargeable button control versus a Wi-Fi alternative
A separate guide from Lars Projects describes a different customizable RGB lithophane lamp. It uses an ESP32 and WS2812B LEDs with WLED over Wi-Fi, specifies white PLA for the lithophane and shade, and powers the lamp with a USB charger. Its image-to-lithophane, printing, assembly, and software steps are not features of the rechargeable Hackster design. See the Lars Projects WLED guide.

Both guides cover making a custom printed lithophane shade. The sources do not provide a controlled comparison of brightness, runtime, durability, or price, so those qualities cannot be ranked from the project descriptions.

Which build fits your use?
- Choose the Hackster design if you want a battery-powered base with a physical button and a small set of built-in color modes, and are prepared to adapt and assemble the printed parts and electronics.
- Consider the WLED design if Wi-Fi control is important and you prefer the separate ESP32/WS2812B setup with USB power.
- Plan for a custom shade either way: the designs are maker projects, and the shade opening and dimensions need to fit the chosen base and image.
Neither project description supplies independently tested runtime, brightness, long-term durability, or retail pricing. Treat them as build guides rather than product reviews.
