LiteLLM’s proxy is a gateway between your application and one or more model providers. Your app sends an OpenAI-compatible request to the proxy, the proxy authenticates it, applies model, budget, and rate policies, then forwards an allowed request using provider credentials held by the proxy. The important separation is between who may administer the installation and what an application key may call. A master key is for administration, while a virtual key is the normal credential issued to an app or service. Proxy-admin roles determine management scope; virtual-key restrictions determine usable models and limits. Persistent virtual-key administration requires a database-backed configuration, so self-hosting also means operating the proxy host, database, and credential-rotation process.

What is the LiteLLM proxy?

The proxy is an intermediary service, not a model provider. A client addresses the proxy endpoint, and the proxy routes the request to a configured upstream provider. This design gives an organization one control point for authentication, routing, usage administration, and policy enforcement instead of distributing every provider secret to every application.

The upstream provider still runs the model and bills or meters the underlying inference. LiteLLM does not turn a provider API key into a user identity, and a provider key is not the same secret as either a LiteLLM master key or a LiteLLM virtual key.

The request path

  1. An operator configures the proxy with model routes and the provider credentials needed to reach those routes.
  2. An authorized administrator creates a virtual key, service identity, or other client credential with the required model access and limits.
  3. The application sends its API request to the team’s proxy URL using that client credential.
  4. The proxy authenticates the caller and evaluates the key’s permitted models, budget, rate policy, and other configured controls.
  5. If the request is allowed, the proxy forwards it to the selected provider and returns the provider response to the application.

This is a conceptual flow. Exact middleware order, latency, and deployment topology depend on the version and configuration in use.

What is the difference between a provider key, a master key, and a virtual key?

They are three different credentials with different owners and blast radii. Treating them as interchangeable is a common source of accidental privilege.

Credential Who normally uses it What it does Where it belongs
Provider API key The proxy operator or provider integration Authenticates the proxy to an upstream model provider Proxy-side configuration, never routine client code
LiteLLM master key A tightly controlled proxy administrator Broad administrative authority over the proxy installation Operator tooling and protected administrative workflows
LiteLLM virtual key An application, team, or automation service Calls the proxy within assigned model, spend, and rate limits Client configuration, secret storage, or a service account

The master key is not an appropriate default credential for an application. If a client is compromised while holding it, the attacker may gain administrative capabilities rather than merely consuming an allowed model budget. Issue a virtual key with the narrowest useful policy instead.

How do LiteLLM admin roles differ?

Roles govern administrative actions and visibility. They do not automatically define which models an application key can call. Scope and write access both matter.

Role Scope Typical capability Important boundary
Proxy admin Entire proxy platform Manage platform-level resources and settings Broadest operational authority; reserve it for trusted operators
Proxy admin viewer Entire proxy platform Inspect platform resources and usage Read-only. LiteLLM’s documentation describes this role as able to see everything across the platform but unable to make changes.
Organization admin One organization Administer resources assigned to that organization Organization scope does not imply control of every organization or platform setting
Ordinary user Resources granted to that identity Use permitted services and view what their account exposes Opening the admin UI does not by itself grant platform-admin rights

The UI is a management interface, not a separate permission tier. Two people may reach the same screens while seeing different controls or receiving different authorization results. Evaluate the role assigned to the authenticated identity and the endpoint’s policy, not merely whether a page is visible.

Platform scope versus organization scope

A platform proxy administrator can operate across the installation. An organization administrator is constrained to that organization’s resources. Do not give an organization admin the master key as a shortcut: that would collapse the intended boundary and grant more authority than the role requires.

Read-only administration

A proxy admin viewer is useful for finance, security, and support staff who need to inspect usage or configuration without changing it. “Viewer” should be interpreted literally: visibility does not include creating keys, changing routes, altering budgets, or editing proxy settings.

What is a LiteLLM virtual key?

A virtual key is an application-facing credential issued by the proxy. It lets a client use approved routes without receiving the provider credentials or the proxy’s master key. A key can be created for a project, team, automation job, or service account and then constrained independently of the administrator who created it.

Controls attached to a key

  • Permitted models: restrict the key to approved model names or routes. A key that can call one route should not be assumed to call every route configured on the proxy.
  • Spend or budget limits: associate usage with a key and set a configured allowance. Spend enforcement depends on the proxy’s tracking and deployment configuration; do not promise identical hard-stop behavior for every provider or edge case.
  • Rate limits: constrain request frequency or throughput so one client cannot consume all available capacity.
  • Identity and ownership: associate usage with an organization, user, team, or service identity for administration and reporting.

These are restrictions on the credential’s use. They do not turn the key holder into an administrator. Conversely, a human with an administrative role may manage keys without using one of those keys to make model requests.

Service accounts for automation

Automation should use a documented service identity or a dedicated virtual key rather than a human administrator’s login. Keep the identity’s model list and limits narrow, store its secret in the deployment’s secret manager, and revoke or replace it when the workload changes.

How do I limit a LiteLLM API key?

Start with the application’s actual model and operating needs, then issue a virtual key whose policy contains only those permissions. The labels and available fields can vary by release, so confirm the current role and key-management screen for your installation.

  1. Identify the client. Decide whether the caller is a user-facing application, a background job, or a service account. Give each independently managed workload its own identity.
  2. Select allowed routes. List the exact models or proxy routes the workload requires. Avoid an unrestricted model list when a smaller allow-list will work.
  3. Set a budget. Apply the spend allowance used by your organization’s accounting policy. Treat it as a control informed by recorded usage, not as a guarantee that every provider request will stop at an exact fractional cent.
  4. Set request limits. Add rate controls appropriate to the workload’s expected concurrency and traffic pattern.
  5. Issue the virtual key. Deliver only the new client credential to the application. Do not copy the master key or upstream provider key into client configuration.
  6. Verify the policy. Confirm that an approved route is usable and that an unapproved route is rejected by the proxy. Perform this verification in a controlled environment using your organization’s normal authorization checks.
  7. Monitor and revise. Review usage and adjust model access, budget, or rate settings as the application changes. Revoke a key that is no longer needed.

A key’s restrictions and its creator’s role are separate. A proxy administrator may issue a key limited to one model, while an organization administrator may manage only keys and resources inside that organization.

Do virtual keys need a database?

For the documented managed virtual-key workflow, yes: use a database-backed proxy configuration, with PostgreSQL documented for this purpose. The database stores the administration state needed to create and manage keys, identities, limits, and usage-related records across restarts and multiple operators.

What self-hosting adds

  • Database operations: provision PostgreSQL, protect it, back it up, monitor it, and plan upgrades.
  • Proxy operations: size the host for your traffic and model-routing workload, apply operating-system updates, and protect the proxy endpoint.
  • Secret management: store provider keys, master credentials, and virtual keys outside source code and rotate them according to your organization’s procedure.
  • Availability planning: decide whether the database and proxy need redundancy, health checks, and recovery procedures.

LiteLLM’s deployment guidance is operational advice, not a published benchmark or certified minimum. A 16 GB RAM mini PC may be a searchable physical-host option for a small self-hosted proxy, but 16 GB is not a LiteLLM-certified requirement. Validate CPU, memory, storage, database placement, network capacity, operating system, and expected concurrency for the workload before selecting hardware.

How should I protect the master key?

Keep the master key in an operator-only secret store and use it only for administrative workflows. Never embed it in a browser bundle, mobile app, shared notebook, or routine backend configuration when a virtual key can perform the required model calls.

LiteLLM documents master-key rotation separately. Follow that current procedure for your release, coordinate dependent automation, and verify which services still reference the old value. Do not assume that changing a secret is interruption-free: clients, workers, and deployment manifests may retain the previous credential until they are updated.

What happens when a request violates a key policy?

The proxy evaluates the client-side authorization before forwarding an allowed request to the provider. A request using a key that is not permitted for the requested model, exceeds a configured rate policy, or has no remaining tracked budget should be treated as a proxy authorization or limit failure rather than a provider credential failure.

When diagnosing a rejection, separate these layers:

  • Client authentication: is the application presenting the intended virtual key or service credential?
  • Key policy: does that key allow the requested model, organization, and usage level?
  • Proxy configuration: is the route configured and enabled?
  • Provider authentication: does the proxy have a valid upstream provider credential?
  • Provider response: did the upstream service reject the request for its own quota, availability, or policy reason?

This separation prevents an operator from solving a key-policy problem by exposing a more powerful credential.

Which deployment choices should an operator compare?

Choose based on governance and operational responsibility, not on the name of a credential.

What are the most common LiteLLM access mistakes?

  • Giving every application the master key: replace it with a virtual key limited to the application’s routes and budget.
  • Assuming a virtual key inherits admin rights: key permissions govern model use; the creator’s role governs administration.
  • Assuming organization scope is platform scope: an organization admin should not be expected to manage unrelated organizations or global settings.
  • Confusing UI visibility with authorization: a visible page does not prove that a write action is allowed.
  • Putting provider secrets in client code: keep upstream credentials at the proxy.
  • Promising exact budget cutoffs: document how your deployment tracks spend and communicate any provider or accounting caveats.
  • Skipping persistent storage: plan the documented PostgreSQL-backed setup when you need durable key administration rather than a disposable demonstration.
  • Choosing hardware by RAM alone: workload, CPU, storage, database location, and traffic matter more than a single memory figure.

How do I design a safe request flow for a team?

Use separate administrative and application paths. Operators authenticate with their assigned role, configure routes and provider credentials, and issue virtual keys. Applications authenticate only with their own keys and never receive the authority used to administer the proxy.

  1. Define organizations, teams, and service identities before issuing credentials.
  2. Map each workload to the smallest model allow-list and a documented spend and rate policy.
  3. Store provider credentials and master credentials in restricted secret storage.
  4. Use a PostgreSQL-backed configuration for durable key management.
  5. Give support or finance staff viewer access when inspection is sufficient.
  6. Review key ownership and usage regularly, then revoke stale credentials and rotate administrative secrets according to the current LiteLLM procedure.

This arrangement keeps provider authentication, proxy administration, and application authorization as separate control planes. That separation is the central reason to deploy the proxy rather than distribute provider keys directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a LiteLLM virtual key be shared by several applications?

It can be technically usable by multiple clients if they receive the same secret, but that merges their usage, limits, and audit trail. Separate keys per application or service make revocation, budgeting, and incident investigation more precise.

Does a proxy admin viewer see provider secrets?

The viewer role is documented as read-only platform visibility, not change authority. Secret exposure depends on how your deployment stores and renders credentials, so restrict secret storage and confirm what the current UI masks before granting access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run LiteLLM without PostgreSQL for a quick experiment?

A temporary or simplified deployment may have different persistence options, but the documented managed virtual-key workflow is database-backed. If keys must survive restarts and be administered by a team, plan PostgreSQL rather than treating an in-memory setup as production control.

What should I rotate first after a key leak?

Revoke or replace the exposed virtual key, then inspect its usage and limits. If a provider key or master key was exposed, follow the corresponding provider or LiteLLM rotation procedure and update every dependent service.
