Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 5 “Elsie” was released on March 20, 2022, with both 64-bit and 32-bit installation images. It is no longer a supported operating system: Linux Mint ended maintenance on July 1, 2024 and directs remaining users to upgrade to LMDE 6.
What LMDE 5 “Elsie” was
LMDE stands for Linux Mint Debian Edition. Unlike the regular Linux Mint editions, which use Ubuntu as their package base, LMDE uses Debian while aiming to preserve the familiar Linux Mint desktop experience. Linux Mint describes LMDE as both a fallback if Ubuntu ever became unavailable and a development target that helps keep Mint software usable outside Ubuntu.
The LMDE 5 release announcement appeared on March 20, 2022. Its “now available” wording described that launch date, not current availability or support.
Was LMDE 5 available for 32-bit PCs?
Yes. At release, Linux Mint offered a 64-bit ISO and also linked a 32-bit ISO through its downloads page. That historical availability does not mean current LMDE releases support 32-bit hardware. Linux Mint’s later LMDE 7 upgrade documentation states that LMDE 7 is 64-bit only because Debian discontinued i386 support.

- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
What were LMDE 5’s system requirements?
Linux Mint published the following requirements for LMDE 5:
| Component | Minimum | Recommended for comfortable use |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | 20 GB disk space | 100 GB disk space |
| Display | 1024×768 resolution | Not stated |
These are Linux Mint’s published release requirements from 2022, not independent hardware tests. A computer that meets them may still have compatibility problems with a particular graphics adapter, wireless chip, printer or other peripheral.

Is LMDE 5 still supported?
No. Linux Mint announced in September 2023 that LMDE 5 would reach end of life on July 1, 2024. In August 2024, it confirmed that LMDE 5 was no longer maintained. The repositories were expected to continue working for a while, but Linux Mint said they would no longer receive bug fixes or security updates. Do not treat a working repository or an old ISO as evidence of current support.
How should LMDE 5 users upgrade?
Linux Mint’s August 2024 notice directed LMDE 5 users to upgrade to LMDE 6. The documented LMDE 7 procedure published in October 2025 covers upgrading LMDE 6 to LMDE 7; it does not establish a direct LMDE 5-to-LMDE 7 upgrade path.

Practical migration approach
- Back up personal data. Copy documents, photos, browser profiles and any application-specific data to external storage or another trusted destination.
- Check Linux Mint’s current upgrade guidance. Use the instructions for LMDE 5 or the currently supported LMDE release rather than improvising repository changes.
- Plan for a clean installation if required. A fresh install of a supported LMDE version can be safer than attempting an unsupported multi-release jump; preserve your backup and verify application requirements first.
- Confirm architecture compatibility. LMDE 7 is 64-bit only, so a 32-bit computer cannot move to that release.
Do you need a USB drive to install LMDE?
No, but Linux Mint’s installation guide identifies a USB stick as the easiest installation method. You write the downloaded ISO to a selected USB device, boot the computer from it, and start the installer. A blank DVD is an alternative for a computer that cannot boot from USB, although Linux Mint warns that optical discs are slow and burning them is error-prone.
Verify the ISO before installation
The LMDE 5 announcement instructs users to verify downloaded images. Linux Mint’s documentation distinguishes two checks:

- Integrity verification confirms that the downloaded file matches the published image.
- Authenticity verification confirms that the signed checksum file came from Linux Mint.
Use the checksum and signed-checksum files provided by Linux Mint for the specific image you download. This is especially important when installing an old release, because a corrupted or tampered image can produce failures that look like hardware or installer problems.

LMDE 5 remains relevant as a historical 32-bit-and-64-bit Linux Mint release and as an example of Mint’s Debian-based edition. It is not an appropriate choice for a new installation in 2026 because it no longer receives security or bug-fix updates. Users should choose a currently maintained Linux Mint or LMDE release whose architecture and hardware requirements match their computer.
