Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Linux was publicly announced in August 1991, so it reaches 35 years from that announcement in 2026. The phrase “thirty-two years of Linux” belongs to 2023. Linux 0.01, the first source release, came later, on September 17, 1991. Those are distinct milestones, and either may be treated as a birthday depending on what is being counted.
Here, “Linux” primarily means the kernel: the core software that manages a computer’s hardware and resources. A Linux distribution combines that kernel with other software and integration to make a usable system. Linux’s story is therefore both the growth of a kernel and the collaboration of the people who build and maintain it.
How old is Linux?
As of 2026, Linux is 35 years from its public announcement in August 1991. The Linux Foundation’s historical account dates the first source release, Linux 0.01, to September 17, 1991. The Foundation’s 2020 Kernel Archeology report reproduces Linus Torvalds’s note about that initial release: “It’s 88 files with about ten thousand lines, written by yours truly except for the vsprintf routine which was co-written with Lars Wirzenius.” That is Torvalds’s historical description, not a present-day code count.
| Milestone | Date | What it marks |
|---|---|---|
| Public announcement | August 1991 | Torvalds announced the project. This is the milestone behind the 2023 framing of Linux at 32 years. |
| Linux 0.01 source release | September 17, 1991 | The first source release, a separate event from the announcement. |
When describing an anniversary, name the milestone rather than treating “Linux’s birthday” as unambiguous. The age changes with the date: “32 years” fits 2023, while the August-announcement anniversary falls in 2026.

What is the Linux kernel, and how is it different from a Linux system?
The kernel is the central layer that coordinates access to hardware and manages resources such as processor time and memory. It is not, by itself, the complete environment most people mean when they say they use Linux. A distribution adds the user-space programs and integration needed to install and use a system.
| Term | Role | What a user typically installs |
|---|---|---|
| Linux kernel | Core resource manager that supports interaction between software and hardware. | Usually obtained as part of a distribution rather than as a complete standalone system. |
| Linux distribution or system | An integrated environment combining the kernel with user-space software. | A usable operating system distribution, maintained and assembled by its distribution project or provider. |
The official kernel overview cautions newcomers not to download the kernel alone expecting a complete Linux system. Different distributions may package and maintain their systems differently; they are not simply competing kernels.

How did Linux grow from a small project?
Linux began in the context of 386-class personal computers. From that starting point, the kernel developed support for many processor architectures and a broad range of systems. That technical reach helps explain why Linux now appears in varied computing environments, but it does not establish a particular market share or number of users.
The project’s scale also changed dramatically from the 0.01 release Torvalds described. The kernel documentation’s introduction, accessed October 4, 2026, describes the kernel as having “over 8 million lines of code” and “well over 1000 contributors to each release.” These are the documentation’s own broad figures, not a separately audited census or permanent totals; code size and contributor counts depend on how and when they are measured. The kernel introduction gives that context.

How does the Linux community develop the kernel?
Kernel development is distributed across contributors and maintainers rather than being the work of one person. Contributors propose and refine changes; maintainers oversee areas of the kernel and shepherd changes through their own repositories. The official kernel continuity documentation describes more than 100 maintainers working in this way.
Linus Torvalds usually handles the final release role, but the process does not depend on that role being performed by one person every time. The documentation points to the 4.19 release in 2018 as an example of someone else handling it. The kernel release archive describes the release cadence and notes that Torvalds maintains prepatch kernels; exact current release status changes over time.

Different figures about community size describe different things and should not be combined into one current headcount. The Linux Foundation’s 2016 announcement of its kernel-development report said its analysis covered over 13,500 developers across more than a decade. That is the historical period studied, not the current contributor population. Separately, the Foundation’s 2024 annual report placed Linux among the top three global open-source projects in development velocity, according to the Foundation’s assessment. Neither statement is a universal ranking of all projects or a current census.

Start by learning how the kernel is organized and how its development process works, then choose an area that matches your technical interests. The Linux Foundation’s education resources provide an entry point and identify kernel contributor Jonathan Corbet, who is also a co-founder of LWN.net and author of Linux Device Drivers, Third Edition. That book is an older edition; check whether it fits the kernel version and learning goals you have before relying on it for current API guidance.
