In the PX4 architecture, the flight controller runs the core flight and safety stack, while a separate companion computer commonly runs Linux for tasks such as computer vision, networking, and higher-level control. That division is a practical foundation for future development—not proof that every drone uses Linux or that a particular future adoption is assured.
What does “Linux and drones” mean?
The phrase can describe two different things: Linux running on a computer carried by a drone, or the Linux Foundation’s role in supporting open-source projects in the drone ecosystem. They are related, but not interchangeable. PX4 is hosted by the Dronecode Foundation, a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project; that governance connection does not mean PX4 runs on Linux on every aircraft.
PX4 is open-source autopilot software for unmanned vehicles, including multirotors, fixed-wing aircraft, VTOL vehicles, helicopters, and rovers. A complete unmanned aircraft system can include more than the aircraft itself: its ground-control station, radio controller, and other systems used to control the vehicle or process its data are part of the broader system. PX4’s overview of basic concepts describes the project and its supported vehicle types.
Where Linux fits in the PX4 architecture
In the documented PX4 companion-computer design, two computers have distinct jobs. The flight controller runs PX4 on NuttX and handles core flight and safety functions. A separate companion computer, commonly running Linux, provides general-purpose computing for applications that benefit from a richer operating environment. This is a documented architecture, not a requirement for every drone.

- Flight controller: Runs the autopilot’s core flight and safety code.
- Companion computer: Can run computer vision, networking, robotics software, and higher-level command-and-control applications.
- Ground and cloud connections: The companion computer may also route communications among the aircraft, ground station, and cloud.
The companion computer can connect to the flight controller over serial or Ethernet. PX4 describes MAVLink and uXRCE-DDS as communication options in this setup. Keeping the core flight functions on the flight controller means Linux can expand onboard computing without being described as a universal replacement for the flight-control operating system. PX4’s v1.15 companion-computer guide documents this division and its connection options.
How ROS 2 and other software connect
ROS 2 is one way to build applications in the PX4 ecosystem. PX4’s ROS 2 guide describes a middleware path that exposes PX4 uORB messages to ROS 2 applications through XRCE-DDS. Developers need to understand PX4 conventions as well as the ROS 2 side of the integration. The PX4 ROS 2 guide explains the integration.

Distribution support is version-dependent. The ROS 2 guide’s statement that official support was limited to Linux and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS belongs to that guide’s version context; it should not be treated as a current list of supported distributions. Check the documentation for the PX4 and ROS 2 releases you intend to use before choosing an operating system.
What Linux could enable in future drones
The clearest future-facing case is that Linux-based companion computers give developers room to build increasingly capable applications alongside established flight-control software. PX4 already documents general-purpose computing, computer vision, networking, and robotics APIs as companion-computer uses. These capabilities make more advanced onboard autonomy a plausible direction, but they do not establish which features commercial aircraft will offer or when.

Interoperability may also matter beyond a single aircraft. In 2019, the Linux Foundation described the InterUSS Platform as an open-source effort to enable communication among UAS Service Suppliers, including a Discovery and Synchronization Service defined in the ASTM Remote ID standard. That example illustrates work on shared airspace services; the announcement is historical and does not establish the platform’s current deployment status. The Linux Foundation’s 2019 announcement provides that description.
Open-source collaboration and standards-based hardware are another part of the picture. The Linux Foundation’s February 2025 account of Dronecode’s 2024 review describes a vendor-neutral community spanning PX4, Pixhawk, MAVSDK, MAVLink, and QGroundControl. It reported that Dronecode technologies were used on over a million drones worldwide across commercial, government, and research applications. That is the Foundation’s attributed figure, not an independent market census; project activity and reported usage do not prove safety certification or future commercial dominance. The Foundation’s 2024 review account gives the context.

Choosing hardware or starting in simulation
Linux is not a mandatory purchase for every PX4 project. The right path depends on the vehicle, mission, compute needs, and development stage. PX4’s documentation identifies vehicle constraints, activities, cost, weight, power use, setup effort, and required compute as relevant considerations.
| Path | Best suited to | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| PX4-compatible flight controller | Projects that need the flight-control hardware matched to the vehicle and mission. | Choose for physical constraints, interfaces, activities, and cost; verify compatibility for the exact controller. |
| Flight controller plus companion computer | Applications needing additional general-purpose compute, such as computer vision or networking. | More compute can bring added weight, power use, setup work, and cost. PX4 does not specify one universal companion computer. |
| Official PX4 developer kit | Developers seeking supported physical hardware with less assembly and setup friction. | PX4 describes kits as needing a Pixhawk-standard or equivalent controller, stable PX4 pre-installed, and low-friction assembly; check current models and availability. |
| Software-in-the-loop simulation | Early development or exploration before buying or assembling flight hardware. | Simulation supports software work without hardware, but does not replace tests of a particular vehicle’s sensors, actuators, or flight behavior. |
PX4’s main guide points developers to build and software-in-the-loop (SITL) simulation workflows and lists QGroundControl, MAVSDK, and ROS 2 among ways to connect with PX4. The main-branch documentation can change, so use the appropriate release documentation for version-specific setup steps. The PX4 developer guide is the entry point.

What to expect—and what not to assume
- Expect: Linux to be useful on some companion computers for applications that need general-purpose software, networking, or additional compute.
- Do not assume: that every drone runs Linux, that Linux replaces the flight controller’s real-time responsibilities, or that every project needs a companion computer.
- Do not infer: a guaranteed autonomy timeline, universal adoption, certification, or current deployment of an airspace service from project documentation or historical announcements.
