Estimate transfer before choosing a plan
For a continuous stream, outgoing bitrate is a major part of the operating cost. A useful decimal estimate is:
Monthly data (GB) ≈ bitrate (Mbps) × 10.8 × days streamed.

These are arithmetic estimates using decimal units, not provider-published allowances. Add room for audio, protocol and container overhead, reconnects, and any other server traffic. Then compare your estimate with the selected plan’s current transfer allowance and overage or throttling terms. Do not rely on an older community post’s plan example as today’s specification.
Size the server for the work it actually performs
Relaying or playing a prepared feed
Sending an existing feed or playing a prepared file without changing it may use less compute than rendering scenes or transcoding. That is a workload-dependent inference, not a guaranteed sizing rule: test the exact software and media you plan to use. Watch CPU, memory, and outgoing transfer while it runs.

Rendering scenes or encoding video
Live scene rendering and encoding can demand more compute. Linode community guidance suggests considering a dedicated-CPU option for video streaming and monitoring actual resource use. Vultr’s documented Broadcaster setup uses a GPU marketplace instance. Neither point establishes an optimal instance size; choose after measuring the workload rather than assuming that one provider or instance category will suit every stream.
Choose a location by testing
Consider both the audience’s geography and the path from your server to YouTube ingest. A viewer-near server is not proof of a better ingest route. Select a location currently offered by the provider, then test a representative stream and observe YouTube’s stream health before committing to continuous operation.

Configure the YouTube encoder and test the full stream
YouTube recommends a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For H.264, its recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Use the recommendation matching your chosen output and verify current guidance in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Get the ingest details from YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use the stream’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Prefer encrypted ingest. Use the RTMPS URL provided by Live Control Room when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS encryption guidance.
- Set and verify output settings. Configure a constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds), and the appropriate codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube’s cited recommendations include 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60.
- Run a representative test before going public. Use a private or unlisted test with motion and audio similar to the intended stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
- Observe the server and recovery path. Check CPU or GPU use, memory, outgoing transfer, and logs. Test the restart or reconnect path you expect to need; a successful short test alone does not establish that a stream will remain uninterrupted.
YouTube’s testing and monitoring advice is in its live encoder guidance. Continuous operation also depends on your software supervision, provider terms, network path, and handling of failures; the available provider material does not establish a guaranteed 24/7 outcome for either service.

Check copyright and monetization implications
Having the technical ability to loop a video does not grant permission to use its audio or visuals. Confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to every element in the stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright rules before broadcasting. Separately, a stream’s technical uptime does not establish eligibility for monetization: assess the content against YouTube’s current monetization and reused-content policies rather than assuming that continuous playback qualifies.
Compare actual cost and terms, not headline prices
A fair comparison uses plans that can run the same workload in the intended location and accounts for all required services. Check the current purchase terms for:
