There is no universal cheaper choice: a 24/7 YouTube loop’s cost depends on the VM you select and, especially, how much outbound transfer its plan includes. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, a continuous stream sends about 3,017 GiB in 30 days before protocol overhead—more than the transfer allowance shown in the entry examples for either provider. Compare compute and excess transfer together, using the actual India-region plans available at checkout.
What you pay for when a VPS feeds a YouTube loop
In this setup, an encoder or relay on the virtual machine sends one continuous feed to YouTube’s ingest servers. The VM’s outbound transfer is that server-to-YouTube feed. Viewers watch the stream from YouTube, so their playback is not additional VPS egress in this estimate.
The recurring cost is therefore not just the VM’s monthly sticker price. Check its CPU, RAM, storage, included outbound transfer, the applicable excess-transfer rate, and the stream’s bitrate. A low-cost plan can cost more overall if its allowance is small.
Published entry examples are not a like-for-like India quote
The providers’ public pages give useful starting points, but they do not establish matched India-region configurations or a single cheapest option. Akamai’s Asia-Pacific page displays these shared CPU examples in USD; confirm the plan and price for the specific site in the provider’s console before purchasing.

DigitalOcean says Bundled Droplets start at $4 per month, with included free outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB per month depending on plan. Its location list includes Bangalore. The exact plan size, allowance, and Bangalore selection should be verified in its live catalog. DigitalOcean describes Bundled plans as monthly-capped and v5 Droplets as billed by actual hours, so confirm which billing model applies to the chosen plan. DigitalOcean Droplet Pricing.
These entry points are not equivalent configurations: DigitalOcean’s starting price and transfer floor do not specify the same CPU, RAM, storage, or allowance as the Akamai examples. Nor does the available official information establish a single matched India-region comparison.

Estimate monthly transfer from bitrate
YouTube recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for 720p30. The following are calculations for 30 days using decimal network units, converted to GiB, before protocol overhead—not provider measurements:
| Continuous video bitrate | Approximate transfer in 30 days |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps (YouTube recommendation for H.264 1080p30) | 3.24 TB, or about 3,017 GiB |
| 4 Mbps (YouTube recommendation for H.264 720p30) | 1.30 TB, or about 1,207 GiB |
| 1 Mbps | 324 GB |
Actual server bytes can vary with audio, container and protocol overhead, reconnects, and bitrate behavior. Use the encoder’s configured bitrate for planning and leave room for overhead. At 10 Mbps, the estimate exceeds DigitalOcean’s stated entry allowance floor of 500 GiB and Akamai’s 1 TB Nanode example allowance. The exact excess depends on the selected plan and, for DigitalOcean, the team’s pooled allowance.
Calculate the bill with the right allowance
Use this estimate for a monthly plan:
monthly total = selected compute plan charge + max(0, estimated server egress − included outbound transfer) × applicable overage rate

DigitalOcean: include the team-wide pool
DigitalOcean documents excess outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB; inbound transfer is free. Included allowances are pooled cumulatively across a team’s Droplets, do not roll over, and cannot be transferred between teams. Calculate the team’s total usage and combined allowance rather than treating one Droplet’s allowance in isolation. If the team exceeds its pool, apply the documented rate to the excess. Akamai Cloud: check the selected service and region
Akamai says transfer overage depends on service region. The public material cited here does not establish one universal India rate, so read the current applicable rate for the selected service in Cloud Manager rather than extrapolating from the Asia-Pacific plan examples. Do not assume a 1 GB VM can handle every loop-streaming pipeline. Relaying or remuxing an already encoded file differs from transcoding video, which can require substantially different CPU resources. The cited plan and bitrate information does not establish a sufficient VM size for a particular encoder configuration; test the intended workload and monitor resource use before relying on it continuously.
Configure the YouTube feed correctly
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the stream’s settings and create or select a stream key. Treat the key as a credential: keep it private and do not include it in public commands, screenshots, or logs.
- Set the encoder’s destination. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and the key in the encoder or relay. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s current setup instructions for the stream URL and key fields: Manage live stream settings.
- Set output for the target resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 4 Mbps at 720p30. Use constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Test the actual media and watch stream health. YouTube recommends testing with realistic audio and motion and monitoring stream health. Confirm the feed reaches YouTube and stays stable before depending on it as a loop.
- Provide process recovery. A DIY VPS needs an encoder or relay that continues sending the media, plus monitoring and a way to restart the process if it stops. The stream key and destination alone do not make a process persistent.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for loop content
Before scheduling a recording as a continuous live stream, make sure you have the rights needed for every video and audio element, including music and other third-party material. A VPS or looping service does not grant those rights. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements for your content and account; a technically healthy feed does not guarantee that YouTube will permit or continue to carry it.
Also consider whether the channel’s repeated or reused material complies with YouTube’s policies, especially if monetization matters. This is a content and policy question, not a bandwidth calculation; check the current rules that apply to your channel rather than assuming that a loop is automatically eligible.

StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India, and cards are accepted worldwide.
Common cost and setup mistakes
- Comparing only monthly VM prices: include transfer and overage; an always-on feed can use several terabytes each month.
- Using viewers as a multiplier on VPS egress: for this architecture, the VM sends one feed to YouTube; playback is hosted by YouTube.
- Assuming the provider’s entry allowance is your actual allowance: verify the selected plan, region, and, for DigitalOcean, the team’s pooled usage.
- Using a universal Akamai overage figure: its documented rate varies by service region; check the applicable Cloud Manager figure.
- Underestimating actual transfer: protocol overhead, reconnects, and bitrate variation add to the nominal estimate. Keep margin and monitor usage.
- Choosing compute by price alone: a relay of encoded media and a transcoder have different resource needs. Validate CPU and memory against the actual workload.
- Feed stops or does not connect: check that the encoder process is running, the YouTube stream URL and key are correct, the configured bitrate and keyframe interval are supported, and YouTube reports healthy ingest. Restart or monitor the process if it has exited.
