Short answer: LinkedIn does not publish a fixed pixel width and height for a custom thumbnail on an ordinary organic video post in its current sharing instructions. You can upload a thumbnail through the Video thumbnail control, but LinkedIn’s stated pixel range applies to the video file, not the thumbnail. Paid video ads follow a different rule: the thumbnail must match the ad video’s aspect ratio and resolution, be JPG or PNG, and be no larger than 2 MB.

The correct dimensions therefore depend on where the video appears: an organic post, a video ad, or an article cover video. The guidance below reflects LinkedIn Help pages accessed September 29, 2026.

What size should an organic LinkedIn video thumbnail be?

For a normal, unpaid LinkedIn video post, there is no official fixed thumbnail dimension in pixels in LinkedIn’s current instructions. LinkedIn tells publishers to upload a custom image with the Video thumbnail control after adding the video, but it does not specify a required width × height for that image. See LinkedIn’s video-sharing instructions.

That means a claim such as “LinkedIn thumbnails must be 1280 × 720” is not supported by the current organic-post documentation. You can make a thumbnail that matches your video’s shape and resolution, which usually avoids visible cropping, but treat that as a production choice rather than a LinkedIn-published requirement.

Do not confuse video limits with thumbnail dimensions

LinkedIn lists these limits for the uploaded organic video:

  • Resolution from 256 × 144 to 4096 × 2304 pixels.
  • Aspect ratio from 1:2.4 to 2.4:1.
  • File size from 75 KB to 5 GB.
  • Length from 3 seconds to 15 minutes on desktop; the mobile app allows videos as short as 2 seconds.
  • Frame rate from 10 to 60 fps.
  • Bit rate from 192 Kbps to 30 Mbps.

Those are upload requirements for the video stream. They do not establish a required custom-thumbnail resolution.

LinkedIn video-ad thumbnail dimensions

Paid video ads have an explicit thumbnail rule. LinkedIn says the thumbnail and the ad video should have the same aspect ratio and resolution. The optional thumbnail must be a JPG or PNG file of no more than 2 MB. This rule applies to ads, not automatically to organic posts. LinkedIn’s video-ad specifications list the following video formats:

Ad format Aspect ratio Recommended video size Allowed video range Thumbnail requirement
Landscape 16:9 1920 × 1080 or 1200 × 675 640 × 360 to 1920 × 1080 Use the same ratio and resolution as the selected video; JPG or PNG, maximum 2 MB
Square 1:1 Not separately stated 360 × 360 to 1920 × 1920 Match the video’s ratio and resolution; JPG or PNG, maximum 2 MB
Vertical 4:5 720 × 900 360 × 450 to 1080 × 1350 Match the video’s ratio and resolution; JPG or PNG, maximum 2 MB
Vertical 9:16 720 × 1280 360 × 640 to 1080 × 1920 Match the video’s ratio and resolution; JPG or PNG, maximum 2 MB

For example, if your ad video is 1200 × 675, prepare a 1200 × 675 thumbnail. If the video is 1080 × 1350, use that same 4:5 canvas for the thumbnail. Do not substitute the 16:9 recommendation for a square or vertical campaign.

Article cover videos use a separate workflow

When you publish a LinkedIn article, the article editor can accept a cover video and lets you upload a custom thumbnail. LinkedIn’s article rich-media instructions do not state a separate thumbnail width or height. Use the dimensions of the cover video and preview the result in the editor rather than relying on an unofficial “required” number.

How to make a thumbnail that survives LinkedIn’s layouts

1. Identify the publishing surface

  1. Choose organic post, video ad, or article cover video.
  2. For an ad, record the exact video dimensions and use those dimensions for the thumbnail.
  3. For an organic post or article, keep the image’s aspect ratio equal to the video unless you have a reason to create a different crop.

2. Build the image at the video’s native canvas

Export a still frame or design a separate image at the same width and height as the video. Matching the canvas prevents an avoidable resize. For organic posts, this is a practical consistency rule, not an official pixel mandate. For ads, it is LinkedIn’s stated matching requirement.

3. Keep critical details away from the edges

LinkedIn advises keeping important video content, text, and logos clear of the top, bottom, and side edges because interface controls may overlap them. LinkedIn does not publish a numerical thumbnail safe-zone. Leave visible breathing room instead of placing a headline flush against an edge.

4. Make the first glance understandable

  • Use one clear subject or product image.
  • Limit text to a short promise or topic label that remains readable on a phone.
  • Use strong contrast and avoid placing text over a busy frame.
  • Check faces, logos, and subtitles at a small preview size.

5. Upload and verify in LinkedIn

  1. Open LinkedIn’s post composer and add your video.
  2. After the video loads, select Video thumbnail.
  3. Choose your image, save it, and inspect the preview before publishing.
  4. For an ad, confirm the image is JPG or PNG, under 2 MB, and exactly matches the video’s ratio and resolution.

Common problems and fixes

“My thumbnail looks cropped”

Check whether the image and video use different aspect ratios. Re-export the thumbnail on the video’s canvas, then upload it again. For an organic post, LinkedIn has not documented a fixed thumbnail crop size, so previewing the actual post is the reliable check.

“The ad manager rejects my thumbnail”

Confirm all three ad-specific conditions: JPG or PNG format, file size no greater than 2 MB, and identical aspect ratio and resolution to the ad video. A 1920 × 1080 thumbnail will not satisfy a 1080 × 1350 video.

“The text is hidden behind controls”

Move the headline and logo inward from every edge and upload a revised image. LinkedIn’s safety advice is qualitative; there is no official pixel safe-zone to calculate.

“I cannot find the thumbnail control”

Make sure you are editing a video upload, not a still-image post. The organic workflow exposes Video thumbnail after the video is added. Article cover videos use the article editor’s media controls instead.

“The video itself will not upload”

Check the organic video limits: 256 × 144 through 4096 × 2304 pixels, 1:2.4 through 2.4:1 aspect ratio, 75 KB through 5 GB, the applicable minimum duration, 10–60 fps, and 192 Kbps–30 Mbps bit rate. Fixing a video-limit failure will not create a thumbnail-size requirement that LinkedIn does not publish.

Previewing a clean page capture without configuring a browser

If you need a clean image of a LinkedIn article, campaign landing page, or documentation page for review, you can capture it with ScreenshotNeo. It is a screenshot API and MCP server; it does not replace LinkedIn’s thumbnail upload control or choose the thumbnail dimensions for you. It is useful for checking how a finished page looks without cookie banners, newsletter popups, or chat widgets.

Or skip the browser setup:

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The examples below capture LinkedIn’s video-sharing help page; replace the URL with a page you are allowed to access. Full API options are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a7486279 -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a7486279"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a7486279' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each cleanup step configurable. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

What LinkedIn does—and does not—promise

LinkedIn’s official pages establish an upload control for organic thumbnails, but no fixed organic pixel size. They establish a matching ratio-and-resolution rule and a 2 MB JPG/PNG limit for ad thumbnails. They do not provide a numeric organic safe-zone or a named study proving that one thumbnail size improves performance. Treat any additional dimensions found in templates or third-party tools as design conventions unless LinkedIn updates its instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does LinkedIn publish a recommended organic thumbnail resolution?

Not in the current organic video-sharing instructions reviewed for September 2026. They describe the Video thumbnail upload control but no fixed pixel width or height.

Can I use a video frame as my custom thumbnail?

Yes. Exporting a representative frame at the video’s native dimensions is a practical workflow; for an ad, the exported frame must still meet the ad thumbnail’s matching and 2 MB rules.

Are the 16:9, 1:1, 4:5, and 9:16 numbers mandatory for every LinkedIn video?

No. Those are video-ad creative formats. An organic post can use any aspect ratio within LinkedIn’s published organic video range.
