The Lifex ESP32-Tux-Mini is a 20 × 20 mm ESP32-C3 development board built to make small-scale energy-harvesting experiments practical. Its reported power chain uses a small solar cell and a Texas Instruments BQ25504 circuit to charge a 3.7 V LiPo battery, which then powers the microcontroller. That is a useful maker project, not proof that the board can run indefinitely: published sources do not establish its runtime or harvesting performance.
What is the ESP32-Tux-Mini?
Lifex describes the board as an ESP32-C3 design created for a sensor cube. Hackster’s report describes its energy-harvesting circuit, while the seller listing documents its size and exposed connections. Together, these describe a compact development board aimed at experimenting with a battery-powered sensor project rather than a measured, finished energy-autonomous product.
According to the seller listing, the board measures 20 mm by 20 mm and includes USB-C for power and programming, nine GPIO pins, UART transmit and receive pins, ground, 3.3 V and 5 V pins, and an onboard WS2812B RGB LED. These are board-level features; the ESP32-C3 datasheet describes the chip, not every capability or electrical limit of the complete board. See the Lifex seller listing.
How the energy-harvesting power path works
- Harvesting source: A small solar cell supplies energy to the harvesting circuit.
- Energy conversion and storage: The circuit, reported to be built around Texas Instruments’ BQ25504, charges a 3.7 V lithium-polymer battery.
- Board power: The battery powers the ESP32-C3.
This separates the solar input from the microcontroller’s supply: the reported design stores harvested energy in a battery, then draws power from that battery to operate the board. Hackster reports that the BQ25504 can also be used with suitable harvesting hardware for sources such as RF, heat, or movement. Those are possible source categories for appropriately designed systems, not evidence that the Tux Mini directly accepts each source or has been tested with them. Read Hackster’s report on the board.

- Entering download mode: Press and hold the BOOT button of ESP32C3, then press the RESET button, release the RESET button, and then release the BOOT button, at this time, ESP32C3 will enter the download mode. (You need to re-enter the download mode every time you connect, sometimes you press it once, the port is unstable and will disconnect, you can judge it by the port recognition sound)
What the ESP32-C3 contributes
The ESP32-C3 brings wireless connectivity and common microcontroller interfaces to the board. In Espressif Systems’ ESP32-C3 Series Datasheet v2.4, dated 2026-05-06, the chip is specified as a 32-bit, single-core RISC-V processor running at up to 160 MHz, with 400 KB SRAM, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth LE. The datasheet also lists peripherals including UART, SPI, I2C, USB Serial/JTAG, and ADC. Consult the ESP32-C3 Series Datasheet for detailed chip specifications.
Espressif lists 5 µA deep-sleep power consumption for the ESP32-C3 chip. This is a chip-level datasheet figure, not a measurement of the Tux Mini as a complete board. Other board components and the project’s operating pattern matter when estimating power use, so this number alone cannot establish battery life.

What is—and is not—established about energy autonomy
The maker’s stated goal was a sensor cube that would be “(more or less) energy independent.” The described solar-to-battery-to-board arrangement makes that a sensible experiment to pursue, but the available reporting and seller listing do not give a measured runtime, battery capacity, solar-cell rating, conversion efficiency, or autonomy result. Without those figures and the project’s workload and light conditions, it is not possible to determine how long the board would run or whether a particular installation could replenish its energy use.
For a meaningful evaluation, a builder would need to characterize the complete setup: the solar cell and its illumination, the battery and its usable capacity, the board’s consumption during active and sleep periods, and the sensor and radio workload. Those measurements would describe a specific build and conditions, not a universal runtime for the Tux Mini.
