LibreOffice 26.2, announced on February 4, 2026, adds targeted Writer and Calc features, Markdown support, faster EPUB export and rendering changes intended to improve responsiveness with complex documents. It is now a previous release line: LibreOffice’s release-notes page lists 26.8.0 (August 26, 2026) as the latest branch and 26.2.6 (September 24, 2026) as the maintenance release for the 26.2 line.
What changed in LibreOffice 26.2?
The release focuses on daily workflow improvements rather than a single headline feature. The Document Foundation says LibreOffice 26.2 brings “better performance, smoother interaction with complex documents and improved compatibility with files created in other office software.”
| Area | Changes in 26.2 | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Writer | Markdown import and export; floating tables can be split into additional floating tables; improved change tracking; start- and end-paragraph alignment; more accurate snap-to-grid alignment | More flexible document exchange and layout control, with the floating-table change specifically intended to improve DOCX export |
| Calc | xmlMaps.xml support; more sort-dialog options; Excel 2010 and later as the default XLSX format; BIFF12 clipboard support |
Better handling of selected Excel data workflows and XML-mapped spreadsheets |
| Base and other workflows | Multi-user Base; faster EPUB export; connector support for Writer and Calc; Markdown support | Broader collaboration and publishing workflows |
| Rendering and interface | Mandatory Skia rendering on macOS and Windows; vertical dialog tabs, with an option to retain horizontal tabs; context-menu hyperlink insertion | A consistent rendering path and several small interaction changes |
| PDF and accessibility | PDF export can remove document external links; accessibility, performance and compatibility improvements | More control over exported links and general usability |
Feature descriptions and the release overview are available from LibreOffice’s 26.2 “What’s new” page.
Does LibreOffice 26.2 actually run faster?
The project describes improved responsiveness and smoother opening, editing and saving of large documents. The announcement also highlights faster EPUB export and Skia rendering on macOS and Windows.

Those are release-level descriptions, not a published benchmark. The official material reviewed for this release does not provide controlled before-and-after timings, speed percentages or an independent test score. Performance will therefore depend on document complexity, hardware, operating system and the specific workflow.
How much better is DOCX compatibility?
There is one explicit DOCX-related change: Writer can split floating tables into further floating tables, a behavior the project links to improved DOCX export. That is a targeted interoperability improvement, not a guarantee that every DOCX will preserve its layout perfectly.
Rank #2
DOCX files can contain application-specific styles, fields, fonts, drawing objects and macros. LibreOffice 26.2’s release notes do not publish a comprehensive cross-suite compatibility score or a document-by-document test matrix, so important files should still be opened and checked in the software used by their recipients.
What does 26.2 change for XLSX and Excel workflows?
Saving XLSX files
When saving as XLSX, Excel 2010 and later is made the default format target. This clarifies the normal save path for contemporary Excel files; it does not make LibreOffice identical to Excel’s calculation engine or formatting behavior.

XML maps and clipboard data
Calc adds support for xmlMaps.xml and BIFF12 clipboard formats used by Excel 2007 and later. These changes address specific data-exchange cases, especially when spreadsheets rely on mapped XML data or clipboard content from newer Excel versions.
Sorting
The expanded sort dialog provides additional options for arranging spreadsheet data. The exact result still depends on the data types, formulas and formatting in the workbook.
Rank #4
What is new for Markdown, EPUB and Base?
Markdown
Writer can import and export Markdown, making it easier to move text between plain-text publishing workflows and an office document. Conversion can still require review when a document uses complex layout, tracked changes, tables or other features that Markdown does not represent directly.
EPUB
The Document Foundation identifies faster EPUB export as one of the release’s workflow improvements. No official timing or percentage is supplied, so the benefit should be understood as a project claim rather than a measured guarantee.

Base
Multi-user Base support expands the database component’s collaboration model. Whether it fits a particular deployment depends on the database engine, connection setup and concurrency requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does mandatory Skia rendering mean?
On macOS and Windows, LibreOffice 26.2 makes Skia the required rendering path. Rendering affects how the interface and document graphics are drawn; it is not itself a promise that every document will open faster. Differences can appear with graphics, fonts, display scaling or older hardware, so organizations should test their normal templates before broad rollout.
Should you install 26.2 or a newer branch?
As of September 27, 2026, the official release notes list 26.8.0 as the latest branch and 26.2.6 as the previous branch’s maintenance release. That makes 26.2 relevant when you specifically need its branch-level behavior or are maintaining an established deployment, but it is not the newest feature line.
- Choose the latest branch if you want the newest supported features and fixes and your organization can validate the update.
- Stay on 26.2.6 if your deployment is intentionally pinned to that maintenance branch and its tested behavior.
- Test either choice with representative DOCX, XLSX, Markdown and PDF workflows before changing a shared or production environment.
How should you evaluate compatibility before switching?
- List the exact formats your team exchanges, including DOCX, XLSX, Markdown, PDF and any database files.
- Collect representative documents with tables, tracked changes, charts, formulas, external links and custom fonts.
- Open and save copies in LibreOffice 26.2, then compare page breaks, styles, formulas, links, charts and print or PDF output in the software your recipients use.
- Test the operating systems and rendering paths used by your staff, especially macOS and Windows systems affected by mandatory Skia rendering.
- Decide whether the maintenance-branch stability of 26.2.6 or the newer feature set of 26.8.0 better matches your support policy.
LibreOffice 26.2 delivers concrete, narrowly defined interoperability changes and workflow additions. It improves the areas the project identified—responsiveness, rendering, DOCX table export and selected Excel data paths—but the official sources do not support a universal speed claim or perfect fidelity for every office file.
