The LG UltraGear evo AI GM9 (27GM950B-B) pairs a 27-inch 5K display with a choice between 165Hz at full resolution and 330Hz at QHD. That makes its central appeal clear: detailed 5K gaming when image resolution matters, or a faster refresh rate when competitive play matters more. The trade-off is that 330Hz requires dropping to 2560 × 1440, and LG says it also requires a DisplayPort 2.1-capable graphics card.
What the LG UltraGear evo AI GM9 offers
LG describes the GM9 as a 27-inch Hyper Mini LED gaming monitor with a native resolution of 5120 × 2880, or 5K, and a pixel density of 218 pixels per inch. Its published specifications also include 2,304 local dimming zones across 9,216 mini LEDs, a peak brightness of up to 1,250 nits, and a 1ms gray-to-gray response time. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test measurements.
LG says the local-dimming zone count is 1.5 times that of a conventional Mini LED monitor, citing an internal comparison with its 27GR95UM. The company also lists VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification. Those claims describe the monitor’s design and certification; they do not establish how it performs in every scene or room.

| Mode | Resolution | Maximum refresh rate listed by LG | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5K | 5120 × 2880 | 165Hz | High-resolution play and detailed desktop use |
| QHD | 2560 × 1440 | 330Hz | Games where a higher refresh rate is the priority |
The 330Hz figure is conditional: LG specifies a DisplayPort 2.1-capable graphics card for that maximum, and actual supported refresh rates depend on the computer’s graphics hardware and configuration. Check the graphics card, connection, and supported output modes before expecting to reach either maximum. LG lists DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20) and HDMI 2.1 on the monitor.
What Mini LED and HDR claims mean in practice
The GM9’s Mini LED backlight uses local dimming: different screen areas can be brightened or dimmed independently. LG lists 2,304 zones and says its Zero Optical Distance design is intended to reduce light leakage and halo effects. It also lists TÜV Rheinland Anti-Blooming certification.

- New firmware update available for improved performance, please review the Troubleshooting Guide below for more information
- 1250 Nits Peak Brightness for Bold HDR Gaming - Powered by UltraGear evo's next-generation Hyper Mini LED technology, the display reaches up to 1250 nits peak brightness and meets VESA DisplayHDR 1000 standards. Bright highlights and strong contrast keep gaming visuals clear and impactful—even in bright indoor environments.
- HDR1000 Delivers Explosive Highlights and Precise Shadow Detail - VESA Certified DisplayHDR 1000 brings games to life with brilliant highlights and deeper shadow detail. Explosions, energy effects, and bright environments appear vivid and sharply defined, while darker scenes maintain texture and clarity. With up to 99% DCI-P3 color, every scene displays rich, impeccable color.
- Hyper Mini LED Powers Ultra-Bright 5K Gaming - UltraGear evo’s Hyper Mini LED powers ultra-bright 5K gaming. With 9,216 LEDs and 1.5× more local dimming zones, GM9 delivers brighter highlights, deeper contrast, and sharper detail. Zero optical distance engineering brings the backlight closer to the panel to reduce light bleed and help minimize blooming.
- 5K Gaming with Uncompromising Detail - Experience incredible detail on a 27-inch 5K (5120×2880) display packed with over 14 million pixels. The ultra-high resolution reveals sharper textures, clearer UI elements, and richer environments—bringing every world, character, and visual effect into stunning focus.
These features are relevant for scenes that combine bright highlights with dark backgrounds, but neither the zone count nor the certification proves that blooming is absent in all content and viewing conditions. LG’s peak-brightness figure of up to 1,250 nits and its VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification are published claims, not independently verified measurements here. A hands-on assessment would be needed to judge actual HDR impact, black levels, and visible halos.

What the GM9’s AI features do—and do not do
LG lists 5K AI Upscaling, AI Scene Optimization, and AI Sound. The upscaling feature is meant to enhance lower-resolution input; it is not the same as rendering a game natively at 5K. LG says the result depends on source quality, requires at least Wide Full HD input, and is optimized for a PC or console set to 1080p at 60Hz.

- The World’s Largest 5K2K Gaming Monitor - A massive 52” 5K2K curved, ultra-wide display for gaming surrounds you with cinematic scale and UHD detail. A fast 240Hz refresh rate keeps motion fluid, letting vast worlds unfold with clarity and impact.
- 5K2K Gaming on a Massive 52" Curved Canvas - Step into a massive panoramic view with the world’s largest 52-inch 5K2K gaming display. With a height comparable to a 42-inch 4K 16:9 screen, the ultra-wide 21:9 format delivers sweeping scale and ultra-high-definition detail.
- 1000R Curvature Wraps You in UHD Clarity - The sweeping 1000R curve brings ultra-high-definition detail closer to your natural field of view, keeping more of the screen sharp and engaging at a glance. Expansive worlds feel clearer, more continuous, and easier to take in from edge to edge.
- VESA DisplayHDR 600 & DCI-P3 95% Color - VESA DisplayHDR 600 delivers bright, vibrant highlights while preserving detail in dark scenes, so contrast stays clear and controlled. Combined with up to 95% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, the UltraGear renders rich color—helping fine details stand out in fast-moving gameplay.
- 240Hz Built for Pure Speed - 240Hz delivers rapid frame updates that keep motion sharp and controlled, reducing blur during fast camera pans and quick reactions.
That guidance matters when evaluating the feature: an enhanced 1080p feed may look different from native 5K output, and the result can vary with the source. LG’s announcement describes the upscaling as an industry first, but that is the company’s own characterization, not an independent performance finding.
Connections, laptop charging, and compatibility
LG lists DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20), HDMI 2.1, and USB-C with up to 90W Power Delivery. USB-C charging can reduce cable clutter for a compatible laptop, though the available charging power and display modes still need to suit the connected computer.

LG specifies FreeSync Premium and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility. The US product page includes GPU-generation conditions for variable refresh rate over DisplayPort and HDMI, so compatibility should be checked for the particular graphics card and connection rather than assumed from the feature names alone.
Who should consider the LG UltraGear evo AI GM9?
The GM9 is most compelling for someone who wants one monitor to offer both a high-resolution 5K mode and a high-refresh QHD mode, and who can pair it with hardware capable of driving the desired settings. Its mix of Mini LED, a large local-dimming zone count, HDR certification, and USB-C charging also makes it a feature-rich option on paper.
- Consider it if: you value the option to switch between 5K at 165Hz and QHD at 330Hz, and your PC can support the mode you intend to use.
- Be cautious if: you expect 330Hz at 5K, need independent proof of real-world HDR or blooming performance, or are choosing based only on AI-upscaling claims.
LG announced a US pre-order price of $1,199.99 on April 7, 2026. That is a historical launch price, not a confirmed current price; check the current regional listing for live pricing, availability, warranty, and included accessories.
Verdict
The LG UltraGear evo AI GM9’s defining feature is its resolution-refresh choice: 5K at up to 165Hz or QHD at up to 330Hz. LG’s specifications make it an ambitious Mini LED gaming monitor, but the fastest mode depends on compatible hardware, and published brightness and blooming-related claims are not substitutes for independent testing. It is a promising fit for buyers who specifically want both high-resolution and high-refresh options in one display, provided they verify compatibility and current pricing first.
