LG.Philips LCD’s planned Polish LCD factory became a module production plant near Wroclaw, in Kobierzyce. The company’s 2006 annual filing records construction beginning in June 2006 and mass production starting in March 2007. It was a module assembly site—not a TFT-LCD panel fabrication plant.

Where was the LG.Philips LCD factory in Poland?

The plant was in the Wroclaw/Kobierzyce area of southwestern Poland. LG.Philips LCD Poland Sp. z o.o. was linked to the project, and a Polish government legal record describes the supported factory as producing modules for LCD screens. LG.Philips LCD’s 2006 Form 20-F and the Polish government’s 2010 legal record identify the facility as a module plant.

When did the Wroclaw LCD plant start production?

LG.Philips LCD’s 2006 Form 20-F says construction began in June 2006 and mass production commenced in March 2007. These are reported company outcomes, rather than dates that remained only in the original plan. The filing said initial capacity was expected to reach 3 million modules a year by the end of 2007; it gives that figure as an expectation, not a confirmed later production result.

What did the Polish LG.Philips factory make?

It made LCD modules. That distinction matters: the company’s filing separates module assembly sites from facilities that fabricate TFT-LCD panels. It lists seven panel fabrication facilities in Korea, alongside assembly facilities in Korea, China and Wroclaw, Poland. The filing does not identify the Polish site as a glass-panel fabrication facility.

The company described the Polish investment as a way to strengthen its European customer service and production network. In its 2006 Form 20-F, LG.Philips LCD said: “We anticipate that the Polish plant will help better serve our European customers and further expand our global production capabilities.”

How large was the project, and what did reports estimate?

Eurofound’s 2006 factsheet, summarizing reporting from the project’s announcement period, said the planned factory cost was approaching €430 million. That is a contemporaneous reported estimate, not a verified final expenditure. The same factsheet reported 10,000 planned jobs and said cooperating entities and suppliers accounted for €290 million of the total; these are announcement-era projections, not confirmed realized employment or audited outturns. Eurofound’s LG Philips business expansion factsheet provides that historical context.

A Polish government record concerns investment support for the Kobierzyce module-factory project during 2006–2011. It establishes the existence and period of the support program, but does not establish a final amount disbursed. Broader regional investment and employment estimates also appeared in a PAIiIZ investment newsletter; those aggregates cover multiple companies and suppliers, so they should not be read as actual results for this factory alone.

How did Toshiba fit into the Poland project?

In October 2006, ITmedia reported Toshiba’s investment in LG.Philips LCD Poland and said Toshiba aimed to stabilize panel supply for its television production facility in Poland. The report described a planned start in the first quarter of 2007. For the LG.Philips plant’s actual mass-production timing, the company’s later filing records March 2007. ITmedia’s October 2006 report is contemporaneous supply-chain context, not a replacement for the filing’s production date.

What was LG.Philips LCD’s position at the time?

The Polish project formed part of a much larger display business. LG.Philips LCD reported selling 54.2 million large-size TFT-LCD panels in 2006. In the same filing, citing DisplaySearch, it reported an approximately 20.5% share of large-size display-panel revenue for 2006. Those figures describe the company’s overall panel business, not output or market share attributable to the Polish module plant. The company’s 2006 Form 20-F is the source for both figures.
