For most data-center backup systems, lithium iron phosphate (LFP, also called LiFePO4) is the better default. It normally provides greater thermal stability, a longer cycle life and a wider safety margin than nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC, often written NCM). NMC is still a defensible choice when rack or room volume is the overriding constraint and the operator can fund stronger thermal monitoring, fire containment and operating controls. The right decision depends on required ride-through time, available footprint, ambient temperature, redundancy design, recharge window and the protections installed around the battery—not on cathode chemistry alone.
What LFP and NMC mean in a data-center UPS
Both are lithium-ion chemistries. The cathode material changes the balance between energy stored in a given volume, heat tolerance, aging and material supply risk.
LFP (lithium iron phosphate)
LFP uses an iron-phosphate cathode. Its crystal structure is comparatively stable when heated or overcharged, which is why safety guidance generally places it below NMC in thermal-runaway probability. LFP is also known for long cycle life. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) reported in 2025 that LFP cycle life can reach more than 10,000 cycles under appropriate conditions. That figure is a chemistry-level statement, not a promise for every rack: temperature, depth of discharge (DoD), charge voltage, current and battery-management-system (BMS) settings determine the result in service.
NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt, or NCM)
NMC combines nickel, manganese and cobalt to obtain high specific energy and power in a compact package. Higher energy density can reduce the number of racks or the room area needed for a specified megawatt-hour target. The trade-off is a narrower thermal margin and greater dependence on precise cell balancing, temperature control, detection and containment.

Quick comparison
| Decision factor | LFP | NMC | What it means for a UPS project |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermal stability | Typically better; lower probability of thermal runaway | Typically lower than LFP | NMC requires more conservative detection, barriers and operating controls. |
| Energy density | Lower than high-nickel ternary lithium | Higher | NMC saves space when footprint is the binding constraint. |
| Cycle life | Can exceed 10,000 cycles according to ITU (2025) | Usually lower; exact value depends on cell and duty cycle | Frequent discharge and recharge favors LFP. |
| UPS discharge capability | High when correctly sized | High when correctly sized | Either can supply short, high-current ride-through. |
| Low-temperature behavior | Power and charge acceptance fall in cold; heating may be required | Also loses performance in cold; cell-specific data is essential | Specify the guaranteed temperature range, not a chemistry assumption. |
| Materials exposure | Uses iron and phosphate rather than nickel and cobalt | Exposed to nickel and cobalt price and sourcing volatility | Review supplier provenance, contracts and recycling routes. |
| Protection burden | Still requires a complete BMS and fire strategy | Requires the same controls, generally with less thermal margin | Chemistry never replaces system-level protection. |
| Best fit | Safety margin, long life and repeated cycling | Severely space-constrained installations | Choose only after quantifying the value of saved floor or rack space. |
Safety: why LFP is usually preferred
UK government guidance states that LFP batteries typically have better thermal stability, lowering the probability of thermal runaway compared with NMC. Thermal runaway is a self-heating failure in which a cell releases energy faster than it can dissipate it; neighboring cells can then be heated into the same state. A lower probability is not zero risk. A damaged, overcharged, contaminated or poorly controlled LFP pack can still fail.
Independent cell tests illustrate the difference without turning it into a universal pack specification. In a 2020 NIST/NIOSH study of tested commercial cylindrical cells, the measured heat-to-failure values were 11 kJ for an LFP 26650, 4.3 kJ for an LFP 18650, 3.6 kJ for an NMC 18650 MH1 and 3 kJ for an NMC 18650 HG2. Cell format, construction and test method matter, so those numbers cannot be used as ratings for a complete UPS cabinet.
An Eaton application note gives approximate thermal-runaway points of 270°C for LFP and 210°C for NMC. Treat those as Eaton’s chemistry approximations, not universal trigger temperatures. Actual onset varies with state of charge, electrode design, enclosure, pressure relief and the initiating fault.

Controls every chemistry still needs
- A BMS that measures cell voltage, current and temperature; balances cells; records alarms; and opens contactors for over-voltage, under-voltage, over-temperature or isolation faults.
- Temperature sensors positioned at cell, module and rack levels, with alarm thresholds connected to the UPS and building-management system.
- Appropriate separation, clearances, barriers and physical protection against impact or water ingress.
- Smoke, heat and off-gas detection selected for the enclosure and room, plus a suppression strategy accepted by the authority having jurisdiction.
- Ventilation and exhaust designed for the battery technology and credible failure products; ordinary air-conditioning is not a substitute for engineered ventilation.
- Documented isolation, emergency shutdown, first-responder access and post-event procedures.
Ask the integrator for abuse, propagation and fire-test evidence at cell, module, rack and system level. A safe cell does not prove that a densely packed cabinet will prevent propagation.
Energy density and room footprint
NMC stores more energy per unit mass and volume than LFP. ITU describes LFP as slightly lower in energy density than high-nickel ternary lithium, and Huawei’s data-center comparison identifies the same trade-off. The practical question is not which chemistry has the higher laboratory figure; it is whether the LFP installation fits the allocated room while maintaining access, clearances and service space.
Calculate the usable energy target from the critical load, UPS efficiency, minimum end-of-discharge voltage, reserve margin and required runtime. Then add the space needed for cabinets, busways, isolation equipment, fire separation, maintenance aisles and future modules. If LFP fits, its safety and life advantages normally outweigh the extra volume. If it does not, quantify the operational value of the saved floor area before accepting NMC’s additional controls.

Cycle life, float life and aging
Backup batteries may spend most of their time on float and discharge only during tests, generator starts or outages. Others support peak shaving, renewable integration or repeated short interruptions. Those duty cycles age cells differently.

The ITU’s “more than 10,000” LFP cycles describe potential cycle stability, not calendar life. High temperature, high state of charge, deep discharge and high charge voltage accelerate aging. A battery used only for occasional ride-through may reach its calendar-life limit before its cycle limit. Conversely, a battery cycled daily can consume its cycle budget sooner. Require the vendor to state expected capacity retention at the project’s temperature, DoD, C-rate and end-of-life threshold.
NMC can deliver excellent service life when operated within its specified window, but its cycle-life margin is generally less generous than LFP’s. Compare the warranted years, throughput limit, retained-capacity percentage, replacement labor and disposal obligations—not only the purchase price.
Discharge power, recharge and UPS runtime
Huawei rates both NCM and LFP highly for discharge rate and discharge efficiency. Either can support the short, high-current pulse needed while a generator starts, provided the rack is sized for the UPS’s DC voltage, peak current, power factor, inrush and protection settings.
Specify three separate values:
- Ride-through duration: seconds or minutes until the generator accepts load, including start failure and transfer allowances.
- Usable energy: the watt-hours available before the UPS reaches its minimum DC voltage at the stated end-of-life capacity.
- Recharge performance: the time and maximum AC input power available to restore the required reserve after an outage.
A high-power UPS can demand more current than a nominal energy calculation suggests. Check continuous and pulse C-rates, bus voltage sag, contactor ratings, parallel-string sharing and the BMS’s discharge limits. Confirm that recharge after one event does not conflict with generator capacity or another ride-through requirement.
Temperature, ventilation and environmental limits
Both chemistries lose power and charge acceptance at low temperature. Charging a cold lithium-ion cell outside its specified range can cause permanent damage or plating, so a BMS should inhibit charging or command controlled preheating. Do not assume that an NMC or LFP label defines the operating range; obtain guaranteed discharge, charge and storage limits for the exact cell and rack.

High temperature shortens life and raises risk for either chemistry. Keep the battery room within the supplier’s continuous and excursion limits, account for heat from conversion losses and provide uniform airflow. A room designed only for average HVAC load may exceed limits during a long outage, when the battery is producing its own heat and the generator or cooling plant may be unavailable.
Cost and supply-chain trade-offs
There is no universal price winner. Cell pricing, rack electronics, enclosure design, fire protection, installation, warranty and regional certification can reverse a chemistry-level cost advantage. LFP may cost more in floor space and initial racks, yet its longer cycle potential and lower thermal-protection burden can reduce lifecycle cost. NMC may reduce cabinet count, cabling and room construction where space is expensive.
NMC’s nickel and cobalt inputs expose a project to commodity-price, geopolitical and sourcing concerns. LFP avoids nickel and cobalt but still depends on lithium and phosphate supply. Require documented origin, change-notification clauses, spare-cell availability and an end-of-life recycling or take-back plan. Model replacement labor, outage risk and disposal fees over the planned service period.

Certifications and evidence to require
Certification must match the jurisdiction and the level of assembly. Request reports for the cell, module, rack and complete energy-storage system, not merely a marketing statement about the chemistry. Review electrical, transport, fire and EMC requirements with the authority having jurisdiction, insurer and UPS integrator.
As one documented example, Eaton’s 5P lithium-ion UPS uses LFP cells and an advanced BMS and cites IEC 62133, UL1642, UL1973 and UN/DOT 38.3 compliance. Those claims describe that representative product; they do not automatically apply to another rack, region or battery vendor. Confirm certificate numbers, scope, edition and conditions of use.
A practical decision framework
- Define the load. Record critical IT load in kW or MW, power factor, growth allowance, required ride-through, generator-start and transfer time, target MWh, recharge window and ambient-temperature range.
- Map the architecture. Decide centralized versus distributed UPS, N, N+1 or 2N redundancy, number of strings, maintenance bypasses and physical separation. Chemistry must fit the failure domains, not just the energy calculation.
- Test the LFP fit first. Reserve room for lower volumetric energy density plus aisles, barriers, ventilation and future capacity. If it fits, LFP is normally the lower-risk default.
- Quantify an NMC exception. Use NMC only when saved volume or weight has a measurable operational value that exceeds the cost of added detection, containment, monitoring, engineering and insurance controls.
- Validate evidence. Review propagation tests, abuse testing, BMS fail-safe behavior, thermal barriers, alarm integration, certifications and emergency procedures at the complete-system level.
- Contract for the service life. Put capacity-retention guarantees, inspection intervals, software-support periods, replacement strategy, spare parts and end-of-life handling in the contract.
How to specify and commission the battery
- Provide the UPS supplier with the minimum and maximum DC voltage, continuous and peak kW, ride-through profile, recharge power and ambient envelope.
- Require a string-level model showing voltage sag, current sharing, DoD, end-of-life capacity and reserve margin for the worst credible outage.
- Review BMS communications—protocol, registers, alarm priorities, timestamping and loss-of-communications behavior—with the UPS and building-management-system teams.
- Inspect physical installation: torque records, polarity, isolation points, clearances, cable routing, labeling, barriers, drainage and sensor placement.
- Commission at normal and abnormal conditions, including simulated sensor faults, contactor opening, communications loss, over-temperature alarms, emergency shutdown and generator-start sequencing.
- Record baseline cell voltages, temperatures, internal-resistance or impedance data where supported, firmware versions and warranty dates.
- Train operators and local responders on alarm interpretation, safe isolation, access restrictions and what to do after smoke, odor, swelling or impact.
Which chemistry fits common deployment scenarios?
Enterprise server room with adequate space
Choose LFP when the room can accommodate the required racks and clearances. Its thermal margin and long cycle potential simplify the risk case for a facility that values predictable operation over minimum footprint.

High-density colocation site with scarce floor area
Evaluate NMC only after a measured space model shows that LFP would force a new room, structural work or a material loss of sellable capacity. The design should include validated propagation controls, rapid detection, suppression, ventilation and continuous BMS monitoring.
Facility using batteries for frequent load shifting
Favor LFP because repeated cycling makes cycle-life and retained-capacity assumptions central to the business case. Compare delivered energy over the warranty period rather than the nameplate purchase price.
Cold or poorly controlled environment
Neither chemistry should be selected from a generic temperature chart. Specify heaters, insulation or conditioned cabinets as required, and obtain guaranteed cold-charge and cold-discharge performance for the exact cells.
Maintenance, replacement and end of life
Set inspection frequency from the manufacturer’s limits and the site risk assessment. Trend cell voltage spread, temperature, state of charge, alarms, contactor operations and available capacity. Investigate rising imbalance, repeated thermal alarms, swelling, corrosion or unexplained self-discharge immediately; do not wait for a runtime failure.
Plan replacements by module or rack only if the BMS, warranty and string-balancing design permit it. Mixing old and new modules, or LFP and NMC racks, can create unequal voltage, impedance and protection behavior. Treat a chemistry change as an engineered modification requiring a new compatibility, fire and certification review.

Bottom line
LFP is the sound default for data-center backup power because it combines better thermal stability, long potential cycle life and strong UPS discharge performance. NMC earns consideration when every rack position or kilogram has a quantified value and the operator can implement more demanding thermal, fire and monitoring controls. In either case, choose a certified, fully monitored system whose runtime, recharge, redundancy and emergency design have been validated for the actual site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is LFP automatically safe enough to install without fire protection?
No. LFP lowers thermal-runaway probability relative to NMC, but both chemistries require a BMS, temperature and off-gas detection as appropriate, ventilation, separation, suppression planning, emergency isolation and authority-having-jurisdiction approval.
Can I replace an NMC UPS battery with an LFP pack as a drop-in upgrade?
Not without an engineering review. DC voltage range, charging profile, BMS communications, contactors, protection settings, enclosure clearances and certifications must all match the UPS and local code.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDoes a 10,000-cycle LFP rating mean ten thousand full outages?
No. The ITU figure is a chemistry-level potential. The actual number depends on DoD, temperature, charge voltage, current, controls and the manufacturer’s end-of-life capacity definition.
Should I mix LFP and NMC racks in one data center?
Only as separately engineered systems. Do not parallel different chemistries or mix modules without written compatibility, protection, communications, fire-separation and certification evidence from the UPS and battery integrators.
What information should a battery quotation include?
Require usable end-of-life kWh, continuous and peak kW, voltage window, recharge time, temperature limits, cycle and calendar-life assumptions, retained-capacity warranty, BMS interface, certifications, propagation-test results, maintenance intervals and end-of-life responsibilities.
