Short answer: A leveraged ETF builds leverage inside a fund and generally targets a multiple of its benchmark’s return for each trading day. Margin means borrowing from a broker to buy securities, paying interest and putting account assets at risk as collateral. Neither is automatically cheaper or safer: an ETF bought with cash generally limits your loss to the amount invested, while margin borrowing can leave you owing more than your initial cash.
How leveraged ETFs and margin differ
These approaches create leverage in different ways. A leveraged ETF typically uses derivatives such as swaps or futures to pursue a stated multiple of a benchmark’s daily performance. In a margin account, the broker lends you money secured by assets in your account; you use the borrowed cash to buy additional securities or, in some cases, sell short.
| Factor | Leveraged ETF bought with cash | Buying securities on margin |
|---|---|---|
| How leverage works | The fund uses derivatives and other instruments to target a multiple of a benchmark’s daily return. | The broker lends money against assets in your account; the loan increases your buying power. |
| Measurement period | The stated multiple generally applies to one day. Returns over multiple days compound and can diverge from the multiple of the benchmark’s cumulative return. | The loan remains outstanding for the period you hold it, subject to your broker’s agreement and collateral requirements. |
| Costs | Fund expenses and trading costs; specific amounts depend on the fund and transaction. | Broker-set interest on the loan, plus any relevant account or trading costs. |
| Downside | You can lose some or all of the amount invested. Buying the ETF with borrowed money adds margin debt and its risks. | Losses can exceed your initial cash, and the broker may demand more collateral or sell holdings. |
| Product exposure | May track a broad index, a sector, or a single stock. The underlying exposure matters. | Depends on the securities you buy or sell short; margin itself does not determine what they track. |
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor-education bulletins explain these distinctions: leveraged and inverse ETFs and margin and borrowing. The SEC materials are staff education, not personalized investment advice or a determination that one approach suits every investor.
Why daily resets change leveraged ETF results
Most leveraged and inverse ETFs reset their exposure daily. As a result, a fund that seeks 2x a benchmark’s daily return is not promising twice the benchmark’s return over a month, year, or any other longer period. Each day’s return compounds on the prior day’s value, and volatility can make the multi-day result differ sharply from the benchmark’s cumulative move multiplied by the fund’s stated factor.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The SEC’s 2023 bulletin illustrates the effect with historical examples. In one four-month period, an index gained 2% while an ETF seeking twice its daily return fell 6%; an inverse ETF seeking twice the inverse daily return fell 25%. In another example over that same period, an index gained around 8% while a 3x daily ETF fell 53% and a 3x inverse ETF fell 90%. These are examples from specific historical periods, not forecasts or typical outcomes for every fund.
The daily objective does not mean every leveraged ETF is labeled or intended only for intraday use. It does mean that holding beyond one day exposes you to the effects of daily resets and compounding, so the stated multiple alone is not a reliable estimate of your longer-term return.

What a margin loan costs—and what can happen in a downturn
With margin, you borrow from the broker and owe the loan whether your investment rises or falls. Interest reduces your return and raises the return your investment must earn to break even. Rates and the way interest is calculated vary by broker and account. Cash held elsewhere may not reduce a margin loan unless the broker’s terms allow it to be netted against the balance.
The SEC’s 2022 margin-interest bulletin gives an illustration, not a current rate quote: a $50,000 loan at 7% annual interest alongside $50,000 in cash earning 1% produces a net annual cost of $3,000, or $8.22 per day, absent netting. Your actual cost depends on your broker’s current rate schedule, balances, and cash-netting policy. The bulletin states that interest “directly reduces your return on investment, increasing the amount your investment needs to earn to break even.”

Collateral requirements create risks beyond interest. If securities in your account fall in value, the broker may require additional cash or securities on short notice. It may sell assets to repay the loan, and it can generally decide which holdings to sell. The SEC notes that brokers may change margin requirements without advance notice and that investors are not entitled to an extension of time to meet a margin call. Check your actual margin agreement for the broker’s rights and procedures.
The SEC’s simplified example shows why margin losses can exceed your cash: buying a $50 stock with $25 of your own money and a $25 loan, then selling it for $15, wipes out the $25 cash and leaves an additional $10 obligation, plus loan interest.

Is margin cheaper than a leveraged ETF?
There is no universal cost winner. A leveraged ETF has fund expenses and trading costs; the SEC says leveraged or inverse ETFs may cost more than traditional ETFs. Margin has interest charged under the broker’s terms. Which costs more depends on the specific fund, the broker’s rate and account policies, how much leverage is used, and how long the position is held. Neither cost comparison by itself captures the different risks.
Do not assume an ETF’s expense ratio is the only cost, or that a margin rate is fixed across firms or over time. For a specific comparison, read the fund’s prospectus and fee table, then check the broker’s current rate schedule, margin agreement, collateral requirements, and cash-netting rules. Fund and broker terms can change.

Can you lose more than you invest in a leveraged ETF?
If you buy ETF shares entirely with cash, the usual maximum loss is the amount invested: the share value can fall substantially or to zero, but you do not owe a separate margin loan. That does not make the product low-risk; leveraged exposure can produce large losses, and daily compounding can affect longer-term results.
If you buy a leveraged ETF with borrowed money in a margin account, the ETF’s risks combine with margin debt. You can lose more than the cash you put in and may face a margin call or forced sale. The SEC specifically warns that using margin to invest in an ETF can make potential losses exceed the amount invested.
Why single-stock leveraged ETFs need separate scrutiny
A leveraged ETF tracking one company is not the same exposure as a leveraged broad-market index fund. The SEC staff’s 2022 statement on single-stock ETFs highlights amplified volatility and the absence of diversification. A concentrated underlying asset can make the product’s risks materially different from those of a fund tracking a broad index. The SEC’s statement describes the U.S. product context at publication; it should not be read as saying every leveraged ETF tracks one stock.
What to check before choosing either approach
- For a leveraged ETF: Read the prospectus and fee table. Identify the benchmark, leverage factor, daily objective, fund expenses, and principal risks. Consider how daily resets and compounding could affect your intended holding period.
- For margin: Read the brokerage margin agreement and current rate schedule. Confirm how interest accrues, which assets count as collateral, what maintenance requirements apply, how cash is netted, and what the broker may sell if requirements are not met.
- For either choice: Consider your holding period, ability to monitor the position, tolerance for loss, and financial resources. The actual terms of the fund and account matter more than a generic claim that one form of leverage is cheaper or safer.
These are U.S.-focused educational comparisons. ETF expenses, broker rates, maintenance requirements, tax consequences, and account terms vary; the figures above are SEC illustrations rather than current quotes or personalized projections.
