Choose LEGO PlayStation 72306 if you want a currently listed, near-life-size original-PlayStation replica with a controller and concealed Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes. Choose the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374 if the television-and-scrolling-Mario presentation matters more than current availability. The important 2026 update is that PlayStation 72306 is now an official LEGO set; it is not a fan-only category anymore. The NES is a retired product, so its displayed US price is not a guaranteed purchase price.
This comparison separates official sets from fan-designed PlayStation builds, explains what each model actually does, and gives you a practical way to judge price, space, accessories and seller risk.
Is there an official LEGO PlayStation?
Yes. The LEGO Group announced its first official PlayStation set on September 3, 2026, and general release began October 4 after LEGO Insiders early access on October 1. Set 72306 recreates the original PlayStation (often called PS1), not a PlayStation 5. LEGO describes it as a near-1:1-scale model and lists it as available on its US product page at the time of this comparison.
The official announcement says, “For the very first time, this 1,911-piece LEGO® set recreates the legendary original PlayStation console and controller in brick form.” That is a manufacturer description of the product, not an independent performance assessment. See the LEGO announcement and the US product page for current listing details.

Fan-made PlayStation models remain a separate category. They can represent other generations, change the scale or add personalized details, but no particular designer, instructions or parts inventory has been verified for this comparison. Treat an unidentified “LEGO PlayStation build” as a custom model until the designer provides a complete parts list and building instructions.
What are the official LEGO PlayStation and NES specifications?
The headline piece counts are not an apples-to-apples quality score. The NES includes a separate television, while the PlayStation set concentrates on one console display with hidden game scenes. LEGO’s published specifications are the reliable way to compare what is included.
| Set | LEGO PlayStation 72306 | LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374 |
|---|---|---|
| Console depicted | Original PlayStation/PS1 | Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) |
| Set year | 2026 | 2020 |
| Age marking | 18+ | 18+ |
| Pieces | 1,911 | 2,646 |
| US listing status | Listed as available on LEGO’s US page when checked | Marked “Retired Product” |
| US price shown by LEGO | $179.99 at research time | $269.99 still displayed on the retired page; not a confirmed current checkout offer |
| Published dimensions | Console: over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep | Television alone: over 22.5 cm high, 23.5 cm wide and 16 cm deep |
| Main display idea | Near-life-size console, controller and concealed game dioramas | Console, connected controller, Game Pak and separate 1980s-style television |
| Mechanical interactions | Model Open and Power buttons; controller plugs into the console; scenes can be removed or concealed | Insertable locking Game Pak; TV handle scrolls an 8-bit Mario scene |
| Instructions | One official instruction download is listed | Two official instruction downloads are listed |
The NES has 735 more pieces than the PlayStation (2,646 versus 1,911), but that difference reflects its separate television and additional mechanisms. It does not establish which set takes longer to build, is more durable or is better made; no controlled build-time or durability comparison is available.

PlayStation 72306 is a physical display replica rather than a functioning game console. Its controls and scenes are designed for display interaction, not electronic gameplay.
- Console scale and appearance: LEGO gives the console dimensions of more than 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep, calling the representation near 1:1 scale.
- Model buttons: The Open and Power buttons are functional elements in the model. “Functional” here means that the brick-built buttons move; it does not mean they power hardware.
- Controller: A first-generation-style controller plugs into the console for display.
- Hidden scenes: The build includes removable or concealable dioramas based on Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. You can display the console cleanly or reveal those scenes, depending on how you arrange it.
LEGO does not describe 72306 as containing a working processor, video output, cartridge reader or playable software. Do not buy it expecting to insert an original game disc or connect it to a television.

What does the LEGO NES 71374 include?
The NES set recreates a console-and-television setup, which is why its display footprint and interaction feel different from the PlayStation model.

- NES console: The model includes a connected controller and a Game Pak that inserts into a locking slot.
- Separate television: The 1980s-style TV is a major part of the presentation. LEGO publishes dimensions for the television alone—more than 22.5 cm high, 23.5 cm wide and 16 cm deep—not for the entire console-plus-TV arrangement.
- Scrolling Mario scene: Turning the handle on the TV moves a brick-built 8-bit Mario scene across the screen. LEGO summarizes this interaction as, “Turn the handle on the TV to move 8-bit Mario across the screen.”
- Optional electronic interaction: An action brick in the television can trigger reactions from a compatible interactive LEGO Mario figure, but that figure is not included with 71374.
The hand-cranked scene works as a mechanical display feature and does not require an interactive figure. For the electronic reactions, LEGO points to LEGO Super Mario Adventures with Interactive LEGO Mario 71439 as a source for the separate figure. LEGO’s US page for 71439 was marked sold out when checked, so regard it as an optional accessory to locate, not a guaranteed add-on.
As with the PlayStation set, the NES is not a playable electronic console. The Game Pak, controller and scrolling screen are brick-built representations.
Which set has the better physical interaction?
That depends on the kind of interaction you want. The PlayStation offers tactile buttons, a plug-in controller and revealable scenes tied to two PlayStation games. The NES offers a more elaborate mechanical display: a locking cartridge slot and a hand-cranked animation on a separate TV.

| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A clean, console-focused replica | PlayStation 72306 | It centers on one near-life-size console and controller. |
| Changing the display by hiding or revealing scenes | PlayStation 72306 | The Gran Turismo and Ape Escape dioramas can be removed or concealed. |
| A television-centered retro scene | NES 71374 | The separate 1980s-style TV is the visual centerpiece. |
| Visible mechanical motion | NES 71374 | The TV handle scrolls the brick-built Mario scene. |
| Optional electronic character reactions | NES 71374, with extra figure | The action brick can interact with a separately obtained LEGO Mario figure. |
Neither set should be described as an electronic game system. Their interactions are display mechanisms, and the NES’s optional Mario reactions do not turn the television into a game console.

The published measurements require careful reading. PlayStation 72306’s figures describe the console itself: over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep. They do not include any extra clearance you may want for the controller or for displaying the hidden scenes outside the console.
For 71374, LEGO’s cited dimensions describe the television alone: over 22.5 cm high, 23.5 cm wide and 16 cm deep. The complete NES-plus-TV arrangement needs additional horizontal and depth clearance for the console, connected controller and comfortable access to the TV handle. Do not use the television’s dimensions as the footprint of the complete set.
Before buying, measure the shelf rather than relying on a product photo. Allow room to reach the PlayStation’s moving buttons or reveal its dioramas. For the NES, leave space in front of and around the TV so the crank can be turned without striking neighboring objects.
Is the retired LEGO NES still worth buying?
It can be, if the television-and-Mario presentation is the feature you specifically want and the seller can document a complete, authentic set. It is not the straightforward value comparison implied by LEGO’s residual $269.99 display price: the US product page labels 71374 “Retired Product,” and the presence of an add-to-bag element does not prove that the displayed amount is a currently obtainable checkout price.

For a retired listing, check all of the following before paying:
- Exact identity: Confirm set number 71374, not a smaller Nintendo-themed set or a custom build.
- Condition: Ask whether the box is sealed, opened or re-sealed, and whether bags are original and numbered.
- Completeness: Request a parts inventory or confirmation that the Game Pak, controller, TV mechanism and decorative elements are present.
- Instructions: Confirm that the official instruction downloads or printed manuals are available. LEGO lists two official instruction downloads for this set.
- Price: Compare the seller’s actual total, including shipping and taxes, with other current listings. Do not treat LEGO’s retired-page price as a live market quote.
- Returns: Prefer a seller with a clear return policy, particularly for opened or supposedly complete sets.
A used set may be attractive to a collector, but missing specialized pieces can materially change the cost. LEGO provides routes for buying individual pieces and requesting replacements; use those official services for a genuine LEGO set rather than assuming a fan model’s inventory will match.
How should I compare a fan-built PlayStation with the official set?
A fan build can be the right choice when you want a different PlayStation generation, a custom scale or a design not represented by 72306. It should not be compared as though every online image has a verified parts list or reproducible instructions.
Use this checklist when evaluating a custom model:
- Designer identity: Look for an original designer page, not only a reposted photograph.
- Instructions: Confirm that the instructions cover the complete model and identify the file format and revision.
- Parts inventory: Require a bill of materials with element or color information. Without one, the eventual parts cost is unknowable.
- Scale and footprint: Check measured dimensions, especially if the design is described as “1:1.” A visual resemblance does not establish scale.
- Function claims: Distinguish movable brick mechanisms from electronics. A custom model may have a moving lid or controller stand without being a working console.
- Rights and sourcing: Verify that the listing is the designer’s own work and that any digital instructions are obtained from a legitimate source.
Do not attach a preselected parts bundle to an unverified MOC. A custom PlayStation may require uncommon colors, substituted elements or discontinued parts, and a designer’s inventory is the only dependable basis for estimating the build.

Choose PlayStation 72306 when…
- You want the first official LEGO PlayStation set and an original-PlayStation replica.
- You prefer a console-only display that is currently listed by LEGO in the US.
- You value the plug-in controller, pressable model buttons and concealed Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes.
- You want a clearly documented set with a published 1,911-piece inventory and official instructions.
Choose NES 71374 when…
- The separate television is as important to you as the console.
- You want the hand-cranked scrolling Mario scene and cartridge-insertion mechanism.
- You are comfortable buying a retired set and checking a reseller’s completeness, condition and return policy.
- You may later seek a compatible interactive LEGO Mario figure, while understanding that it is not included and may not be readily in stock.
Choose a fan build when…
- You specifically want a PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PS5 or another custom interpretation rather than the original PlayStation.
- You are willing to validate the designer, instructions and parts list yourself.
- You accept that custom instructions, parts availability and final cost can vary substantially.
The official PlayStation is the uncomplicated recommendation for a buyer who wants an original-PlayStation LEGO display now. The NES remains the more distinctive choice for a console-plus-TV scene, but retirement makes seller verification part of the purchase. A fan design is a customization project, not a substitute for a documented official set unless its creator supplies enough information to reproduce it.
What are the most common buying mistakes?
- Assuming there was no official PlayStation set: That was true before the 2026 announcement, but it is now outdated. Set 72306 is official and depicts the original PlayStation.
- Calling 72306 a PS5: It is an original-PlayStation/PS1 replica. The generation matters for both appearance and the included game references.
- Comparing the prices as current offers: The PlayStation’s $179.99 US listing and the NES page’s residual $269.99 are not equivalent market offers because the NES is marked retired.
- Using the NES TV measurement for the whole set: The published 22.5 × 23.5 × 16 cm figures apply to the television alone.
- Expecting game playback: Buttons, a Game Pak, the controller and the Mario crank are physical model features, not a working console.
- Assuming LEGO Mario is included: The interactive figure is a separate purchase, and its availability can change.
- Treating piece count as a quality or build-time result: The NES has 735 more pieces partly because it includes the television; no controlled comparison establishes build time or durability.
What should you verify before placing an order?
For PlayStation 72306, verify the set number, regional currency, current stock and seller identity. LEGO’s US page listed the set at $179.99 and “Available now” at the research date, but prices and stock can change.
For NES 71374, start with the fact that LEGO marks it retired. Ask the seller for photographs of the box, seals, manuals and key mechanisms; confirm whether all pieces are present; and calculate the delivered price. If a listing claims to include the interactive Mario figure, verify that separately rather than assuming it belongs to the NES set.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a fan model, do not commit to parts until you have the original designer’s instructions and inventory. If those documents are unavailable, you can admire the design, but you cannot reliably estimate cost, completeness or reproducibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the LEGO PlayStation 72306 connect to a real television?
No. The set is a brick-built display replica with moving model elements and decorative game dioramas. LEGO provides no basis for treating it as hardware that outputs video or runs PlayStation software.
Does the NES set include a LEGO Mario figure?
No. Set 71374 includes the NES, controller, Game Pak and television mechanism, but the interactive figure is separate. LEGO identifies set 71439 as one source for a compatible figure; availability should be checked independently.
Are the PlayStation game scenes printed screens or separate builds?
They are removable or concealable brick-built dioramas associated with Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. Their purpose is to change the display presentation, not to reproduce playable game levels.
Where can I get replacement parts for an official set?
For a genuine LEGO set, use LEGO’s parts and replacement service and provide the set and element details requested there. A fan-designed model may use a completely different inventory, so its designer’s bill of materials is still required.
