For the same approximate brightness, an LED typically uses far less electricity and lasts much longer than an incandescent bulb. To choose a replacement, match the old bulb’s brightness by lumens, then select the light color you want and check the bulb’s fit, dimmer compatibility, and suitability for the fixture.

How LEDs and incandescent bulbs compare

Watts measure the power a bulb uses; lumens measure the visible light it produces. A bulb marked “60-watt equivalent” is intended to provide light comparable to a 60-watt incandescent, but it does not use 60 watts if it is an LED. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends comparing lumens when judging brightness.

Approximate brightness Incandescent power Typical LED power range
450 lumens 40 watts 4.5–7 watts
800 lumens 60 watts 5.9–10.5 watts
1,100 lumens 75 watts 9.5–14 watts
1,600 lumens 100 watts 10.5–18 watts

These are DOE’s ranges for A-type, general-purpose replacement LEDs with E26 bases in its purchasing guidance, updated June 2023—not guaranteed values for every bulb. The LED’s exact wattage depends on its model. At about 800 lumens, the listed LED range is substantially below the incandescent bulb’s 60 watts, so a comparable light output generally requires less electricity with an LED. DOE purchasing guidance

How long each type lasts

DOE describes a typical incandescent lamp as lasting about 1,000 operating hours. Good-quality white LED lighting products typically reach 30,000–50,000 hours or longer, though the actual rating depends on the product. Those figures are not a promise that every LED will last a particular number of years in every fixture.

What an LED life rating means

LED useful life is commonly measured as the number of operating hours until light output falls to 70% of its initial level. That is not necessarily the moment the bulb stops working: electronic components can fail earlier, and the light’s color may shift over time. DOE’s LED Basics

Choosing warm or cool light

LEDs do not all have the same appearance. Color temperature, expressed in kelvins (K), describes whether light looks warmer or cooler. DOE gives about 2,700 K as typical for incandescent lamps. If you want a replacement to look similar, choose an LED with a similar color temperature; a noticeable change, such as from 2,700 K to 4,100 K, can make a room feel different.

CCT is not the same as color rendering

Correlated color temperature (CCT) describes apparent warmth or coolness. Color rendering index (CRI) describes how accurately a source renders colors relative to a reference. DOE’s 2023 purchasing guidance states that ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs have a CRI of 80 or greater; that is a specification stated on the cited guidance, not a universal legal threshold for every bulb. CRI is also an imperfect measure, especially for saturated reds. DOE identifies TM-30 measures as a more comprehensive way to evaluate color fidelity, while noting that some color-performance goals can trade off against efficiency. DOE’s Color and Spectrum overview

Why LED light can behave differently

An incandescent lamp emits light in all directions. LEDs are directional, which can reduce wasted light in some fixture applications, but a bulb’s actual performance in a room also depends on fixture optics and the LED’s driver efficiency. A source’s efficiency alone does not establish how well a particular fixture will illuminate a space.

Amazon Basics A19 LED Light Bulbs, 60W Equivalent, Daylight White 5000K, Non-Dimmable, E26 Base, 10,000 Hour Lifetime, 24-Pack
  • LONG LASTING PERFORMANCE: These LED bulbs offer a 10,000 hour lifespan, providing lasting illumination for over 9 years (based on 3 hours of use each day), helping minimize replacements
  • GREAT ATMOSPHERE: Enjoy daylight white light bulbs that create a bright, crisp atmosphere for any room
  • STANDARD FIT: The E26 standard base provides compatibility with most fixtures, making it easy to install these LED bulbs in lamps and overhead lighting

LEDs are semiconductor light sources and are not inherently white. White light is commonly produced through phosphor conversion, color mixing, or a combination of the two. This is one reason LED bulbs can offer a range of color appearances and color fidelity rather than one fixed “LED look.” DOE’s LED Basics

How to choose an LED replacement

  1. Match brightness by lumens. For a familiar 60-watt incandescent replacement, look for about 800 lumens, as DOE’s consumer guide advises. Do not assume that matching the old bulb’s wattage number will match its brightness. DOE Energy Saver guide (2022)
  2. Choose the color appearance. Check the bulb’s kelvin rating and pick a CCT suited to the room or close to the incandescent bulb’s roughly 2,700 K appearance if you want a similar warmth.
  3. Check color rendering if it matters for the room. Look at CRI on the label or manufacturer’s specifications; a higher CRI can be useful where color appearance is important, but CRI alone does not describe every aspect of color fidelity.
  4. Confirm the bulb fits the fixture. Check base type and physical dimensions. Some LED bulbs are larger near the base than the incandescent bulb they replace.
  5. Check enclosure and dimmer requirements. If the bulb will be in an enclosed fixture, confirm that the exact LED model is rated for that use; heat can affect performance and useful life. If you need dimming, verify compatibility between the bulb and dimmer.

Use the exact model’s lamp label and manufacturer specifications for its wattage, lumen output, rated life, CCT, size, enclosure rating, and dimmer compatibility. DOE’s ranges and typical lifetime figures describe categories, not every product’s specifications.
