Neither LED nor older streetlight technology is automatically better for dark skies. The result depends on the light’s spectrum, brightness, shielding and aiming, glare and spill, and how long it stays on. A warm-spectrum, well-shielded LED aimed only where needed can limit skyglow; a bright, blue-rich LED can worsen it. Sodium lamps also produce warm-appearing light, but they still pollute the night sky if poorly aimed or excessive.
What determines a streetlight’s impact on dark skies?
Skyglow is the brightening of the night sky caused when artificial light reaches the atmosphere and scatters. A streetlight can contribute through direct upward light, light escaping at high angles, or light reflected from roads and nearby surfaces. Its label—LED, sodium, or otherwise—does not tell you how much of that happens.
- Spectrum: The emitted wavelengths matter. Short-wavelength, blue-rich light has greater geographic and atmospheric reach than light with less blue content, according to DarkSky International’s position statement.
- Output and distribution: More light than a task needs, or light sent upward and beyond the road, can increase skyglow, glare, and light trespass.
- Shielding and aiming: A fixture that directs light downward and onto the intended area reduces wasted light.
- Operating schedule: Dimming or switching lights off when they are not needed can reduce unnecessary exposure.
- Purpose and location: Appropriate lighting depends on the road, local conditions, and applicable standards—not just the lamp type.

DarkSky International recommends a 2200 K correlated color temperature (CCT), phosphor-converted amber LEDs, or some filtered LEDs whenever possible to minimize negative environmental impacts, while also calling for reduced short-wavelength emissions. See its values-centered outdoor lighting guidance. CCT describes the apparent color of a light source, but it is not a complete account of its spectral power distribution. When comparing fixtures, ask for spectrum or short-wavelength emission information as well as CCT.
How to evaluate a streetlight for dark-sky performance
- Check the spectrum, not just the color label. Prefer a design that limits short-wavelength output. DarkSky’s recommendation favors 2200 K, phosphor-converted amber LED, or some filtered LEDs where practical.
- Look at where the light goes. Favor full shielding and careful aiming that keep light off the sky, neighboring properties, and habitat.
- Compare useful illumination and glare. Nominal wattage alone does not show how well a fixture lights the road. Consider delivered illuminance, distribution, and glare for the specific application.
- Check spill beyond the task area. Light trespass into homes or natural areas is a sign that aiming, shielding, or output may need adjustment.
- Ask about dimming and hours. Reduced output or operating time can avoid lighting areas at levels or times when it is not needed.
- Match the design to the road and local requirements. Confirm applicable roadway standards and local conditions; a dark-sky preference does not by itself establish a safe or compliant roadway design.
These considerations align with the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting, jointly published by DarkSky International and the Illuminating Engineering Society. The principles include using only the light needed and limiting shorter-wavelength blue-violet light to the least amount needed. DarkSky’s Approved Luminaires guidelines, Version 3.1, updated October 2025, set criteria intended to reduce skyglow, trespass, obtrusive light, and environmental impacts. Check the current guideline and product listing before treating a particular model as approved.

Does choosing dark-sky lighting mean removing useful streetlights?
No. Good dark-sky practice is about providing the light a place needs while reducing unnecessary brightness, spill, and operating time. The Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) recognizes potential benefits of nighttime lighting, including road-safety and reassurance benefits, as well as effects on skyglow, health, and ecosystems. Its 2025 position statement emphasizes good lighting design, local planning, and adaptable solutions; it does not establish a single light level that guarantees safety. Read CIE PS 003:2025.

There is no universal measured sky-brightness change established for replacing sodium streetlights with LEDs. A local result depends on the new fixtures’ spectrum and total output, shielding and installation, other nearby light sources, and how and when sky brightness is measured. The technology change alone cannot establish whether the night sky will get darker or brighter.

For public streets, fixture selection also has to satisfy local rules and photometric needs. Municipal procurement documents or a qualified lighting designer can help verify that a warm-spectrum, shielded fixture is suitable for the specific road. DarkSky’s overview of solutions to light pollution also lists LPS, HPS, and low-CCT LEDs among warm-appearing outdoor lighting options.
