LED drivers use several different dimming methods: low-voltage analog control such as 0–10 V, digital control such as DALI, PWM signals, and mains phase-cut control. They are not interchangeable. Choose a driver, LED load, and controller that are designed to work together, then verify the dimming range and behavior in their documentation.

How LED driver dimming works

A dimming control tells a compatible driver how much light to produce. Depending on the system, that instruction may arrive over separate low-voltage wires, a digital control connection, a PWM signal, or the mains supply itself. The driver then regulates power to the LED load.

This makes dimming a system-compatibility decision, not just a matter of choosing a wall dimmer. The driver must support the control method, and its electrical output must suit the LED load. A shared label such as “0–10 V” or “phase-cut” does not by itself guarantee the expected dimming performance.

What are the main LED driver dimming techniques?

0–10 V analog control

A separate low-voltage signal controls the light level of a compatible driver. 0–10 V is widely used in commercial lighting, but implementations can differ in wiring topology, whether the controller sources or sinks current, dimming curve, and minimum output. Do not assume that a 0 V signal switches every driver fully off; check the driver documentation and control design.

Lutron cautions that “even after all of these details have been collected and examined to determine the compatibility between a 0-10 V driver and a control, there is no guarantee that the dimming performance will meet the expectations of the customer.” See Lutron Application Note #587, “0-10v Control Topology”.

DALI digital control

DALI is a digital lighting-control option. It may be a better fit when the installation calls for digital control and system integration rather than a straightforward analog signal. Lutron notes that digital options can offer re-zoning flexibility that wired analog control may not. Confirm the functions and compatibility needed for the specific project in the applicable product documentation.

PWM control

PWM stands for pulse-width modulation, but it does not identify one universal driver wiring method. It may be a control input, a signal generated inside a driver, or the output of a conversion stage. For example, Diodes Incorporated’s AL8116 accepts 0–10 V, PWM, or a resistive potentiometer and converts the input into a PWM output. Texas Instruments’ LM3450 decodes a mains phase angle into a 500 Hz PWM output. Check where PWM appears in the signal chain before selecting a control or driver.

Mains phase-cut dimming

Phase-cut controls dim by altering the mains waveform supplied to compatible equipment. Forward-phase (TRIAC) and reverse-phase are distinct forms; some driver designs support one or both. The TI LM3450 product page, for example, lists both forward-phase (TRIAC) and reverse-phase dimming. That does not mean an arbitrary wall dimmer will work with an arbitrary driver.

IEC TR 63037:2019, published July 10, 2019 (edition 2.0), addresses system-performance aspects and test procedures for mains-voltage phase-cut dimming of mains-operated electronic lighting equipment.

How to choose a compatible driver and control

  1. Identify the LED load. Check its electrical requirements and the driver output characteristics. A control method cannot make an electrically mismatched driver suitable for a load.
  2. Choose the control approach. Decide whether the installation calls for separate low-voltage analog wiring, digital control, a specified PWM signal, or a mains phase-cut dimmer.
  3. Verify the exact pairing. Read both the driver and controller documentation. Check the required wiring topology and input type rather than relying only on a protocol name.
  4. Check the usable dimming behavior. Confirm the supported minimum level, whether the transition is continuous as required, and whether the combination supports switching fully off.
  5. Review the electrical and installation context. Confirm the driver’s output ratings suit the LED load and that the selected control and wiring are appropriate for the installation and local electrical requirements.

For example, Acuity Brands lists an OPTOTRONIC 13 W constant-current driver with 0–10 V and phase-cut control options. Those details describe that specific listing, not a general specification for other drivers or proof that it suits an unspecified LED load.

Which dimming method should you use?

Start with the installation’s control and wiring needs, then narrow the choice to drivers and controllers documented as compatible. A simple analog signal may suit a project that needs straightforward control; digital control may suit one that needs digital integration or re-zoning flexibility. PWM needs a clearly specified role in the signal chain, while phase-cut requires a driver designed for the particular mains-dimming approach.

There is no universally best technique or guaranteed minimum dimming level. The exact driver, LED load, controller, and installation determine what will work and how it will behave.
