LEC free agency, transfers, and loans are different kinds of roster moves. A player is a free agent when no valid team agreement binds them; an early transfer moves a still-contracted player to another team; a loan is temporary. A buyout may be part of a negotiated release, but it is not an automatic fee every player owes to change teams. Any LEC roster change needs league approval before it takes effect. What is the difference between free agency, a transfer, and a loan?
The key distinction is whether the player still has a valid contract and whether the move is permanent. Those details determine what paperwork and permissions may be needed.

Free agency means the player is no longer bound
A player may become a free agent because they never signed a team contract, the team released them, or the agreement expired without renewal. A public statement that a player intends to leave, is exploring options, or is “looking for a team” does not by itself establish that the contract has ended or that the player can sign anywhere.
A transfer moves a contracted player
A transfer is the route for an early, definitive move while the existing contract is still in force. The teams must deal with the player’s contract and applicable law, document the move, and secure written LEC approval before it becomes effective. Transfers can cross league and regional boundaries; a contract can also place limits on where the player may go or give them a right to reject a proposed move.

A loan is temporary
Riot treats a loan differently from a permanent transfer. Tier 1 teams cannot loan players to other Tier 1 teams, while certain cross-tier arrangements are permitted subject to restrictions on windows, duration, and roster places. The returning-player expectation is why a loan should not be described as free agency or a completed permanent transfer. See Riot’s 2026 global policy for the applicable loan framework.
Does a team have to pay a buyout?
No universal buyout applies every time a League of Legends player changes teams. A buyout is a possible negotiated or contractual payment associated with releasing a player who is still under contract; its existence and amount depend on the relevant agreements.
The LEC transfer form distinguishes among a fixed transfer fee, a release or buyout fee, and a conditional transfer fee. It also asks about items such as performance bonuses, on-sale fees, and whether the player has approval rights. These categories describe possible deal terms, not a leaguewide price list. The public rules do not establish a typical fee, an average buyout, or the amount in any particular player’s contract.

A buyout is not the same as a player’s salary, and the player does not automatically owe the fee personally. It is a term that may apply to the teams’ negotiated transfer or release arrangement. Whether a particular player can block a move, must approve it, or has other protections depends on the contract and the applicable rules.

There is a specific exception worth keeping narrow: Riot’s global policy bars a player or coach buyout or termination fee when the team’s league participation agreement terminates or expires without renewal. That rule does not eliminate buyouts for every ordinary release or transfer. The LEC’s 2026 transfer form sets out the fee categories and requested deal details.
When does LEC free agency start in 2026?
Riot’s global policy sets the 2026 player free-agency opening at November 17, 2026, at 00:00 UTC. It identifies the aligned contract end time as November 16, 2026, at 23:59 UTC, with contracts described as expiring after that time; a player’s actual contract or earlier release still matters.
The LEC rulebook, last modified June 22, 2026, lists November 17, 2026, at 00:00 UTC as the next contract-window opening. However, a sentence immediately before the table says the next season’s window begins November 16. Because the table and Riot’s global appendix agree on November 17, that is the better-supported opening date, while the discrepancy should be recognized rather than treated as settled. The opening date is not permission to sign early
Riot’s global lock period runs from the applicable split-three roster lock until the global player free-agency opening. During that period, teams generally cannot make new oral or verbal commitments, financial arrangements, contracts, or trades. The policy lists exceptions, including an extension with a player’s current team, qualifying rookies, Riot-sanctioned development entrants, and certain short-term contracts.

The LEC also restricts qualifying recent participants from making new commitments after its contract window closes and before the global window opens. A reported verbal agreement or offseason rumor is not the same as an approved signing. Coaches have a separate free-agency opening tied to the day after the World Championship final; that is not the player opening date.
How can a team check whether a player is available?
A team should first check the Global Contract Database (GCD), then obtain authorization before approaching a contracted player, and only then file the request that fits the move. Availability, permission to talk, and permission to play are separate questions.
- Check the GCD. Riot describes the public-facing database as a roster list that includes registered players, coaches, and contract end dates. Registration with a professional league is required for eligibility in official matches. A listed end date is useful evidence of a registered contract’s duration, but the GCD does not publish salary, transfer fees, or every private contract term. Riot’s EMEA Competitive Operations resources provide access to the GCD and related forms.
- Get authorization before approaching a contracted player. Riot’s contact rule covers direct and indirect approaches about hiring or acquiring a GCD-registered player, including contact through an agent, lawyer, relative, or friend. A prospective team can request written authorization from the current team’s GCD contact, or obtain a fully executed league availability declaration naming the interested team. The LEC availability form can cover all teams or specified teams for a defined period.
- Do not mistake an availability declaration for a release. The LEC form presupposes that an enforceable agreement remains in place. Being allowed to explore options, or posting that a player is looking for a team, does not necessarily make them a free agent, complete a transfer, or waive a buyout.
- Use the right filing. For a contracted player’s permanent early move, the transfer form records the teams, contract dates, release date, fee structure, and any player approval right. Associated written agreements go to LEC officials, and the transfer needs written approval before it becomes effective. A genuinely uncontracted player instead needs a free-agent signing request.
- File a roster removal when a player is dropped. The LEC requires a Drop Form to remove the player’s GCD entry. A roster removal ordinarily also ends the team’s contract obligation unless the player agrees otherwise in that form.
- Confirm the player is eligible for the roster. Contract availability alone does not guarantee match eligibility. Global rules require at least three regional residents in a starting lineup, and LEC roster submission and approval rules also apply.
What contract terms can change a player’s options?
Riot’s 2026 pass-through contract terms set boundaries, but the player’s actual agreement still matters for issues such as an early transfer, release rights, or vetoes.
- Renewal: Automatic or silent renewal clauses are prohibited. A new term should not be assumed merely because a contract appears to roll over.
- Post-contract restrictions: Post-contract non-competes are prohibited under the pass-through terms.
- Trade limits: A contract may specify trade restrictions or a player veto, provided the terms are clearly stated.
- Material breach: The contract must provide a termination option if a material breach remains uncured after 30 days’ written notice.
- Term length: A player contract must last at least seven days and no more than four seasons. Some short agreements may end before the next global free-agency date; a contract extending beyond that date generally must run to a subsequent aligned date.
That last point is why “all LEC contracts expire in November” is too broad. The aligned date governs the standard calendar framework, but the player’s specific contract and any valid earlier release determine when that individual is actually unbound.

Is LEC compensation the same as a buyout?
No. Salary and minimum compensation rules describe money owed under player terms; a buyout or transfer fee is a separate possible payment associated with a move.
Under the 2026 LEC rulebook, a player on the LEC roster has minimum gross compensation of €1,000 per month, increasing by €1,000 gross for each week the player competed in an LEC match during that month. A separate conditional floor is €60,000 gross in a season after at least 15 regular-season matches for the same team. That is not an unconditional annual salary for every LEC player.
The LEC Sporting Financial Regulations also set a €1,650,000 threshold for the 2027 season concerning the regulated expenditure mechanism for a team’s five highest-compensated players and associated fee treatment. It is not a published cap on an individual buyout. These figures measure different things and should not be added together or presented as a standard transfer cost.

What should fans take from an offseason announcement?
A roster announcement often leaves the underlying legal status unstated. To interpret it accurately, separate the public news from the contract and approval steps that determine whether the move is final.

- A contract end date in the GCD is informative, but does not reveal all deal terms or prove that a specific release or transfer has been approved.
- A reported agreement between a player and a new team may be conditional on the applicable window, contract resolution, roster eligibility, and league approval.
- A completed transfer is not the same as a loan: the former is definitive, while the latter is temporary and subject to separate Riot restrictions.
Riot’s global policy states that all team roster changes must receive league approval before becoming effective. The LEC rulebook likewise requires written approval for free-agent signing requests. Until the relevant approval and effective date, a headline or social post should not be read as proof that a player is eligible to compete for the new team.
