Windows 10 build 9888 was an unofficial partner build that leaked in late November 2014. Contemporary reports described a few interface refinements and a reported shift to NT version 10.0—not a major feature reveal. It was not an official public Technical Preview release, and Microsoft did not support it.
What build 9888 was
Build 9888 appeared on file-sharing sites in late November and early December 2014. InfoWorld called it an unauthorized version, while Neowin reported that it was not intended for public use and would not be supported by Microsoft. These were contemporary accounts of leaked files, not Microsoft authentication or release notes.
Build 9879 was the last official public Windows 10 Technical Preview build discussed in InfoWorld’s December 2, 2014 report. InfoWorld identified 9888’s internal build string as 9888.0.amd64fre.fbl_release.141113-2137 and interpreted it as a November 13, 2014 compile. The compile date is InfoWorld’s reading of that string.
What changed from build 9879
Window animations
InfoWorld and WinBeta reported new animations when maximizing and restoring windows. InfoWorld characterized them as minor refinements, not a substantial redesign.

Early context-menu work
WinBeta described an early effort to bring context menus on desktop and File Explorer surfaces closer to those on Start surfaces. The report described work in progress; it did not establish that menus had been fully unified.
Settings absorbed zPC Settings
InfoWorld reported that the experimental zPC Settings app seen in build 9879 had been folded into the main PC Settings app, which was now called Settings. The app included an Activate Windows pane, but still exposed only a fraction of the adjustments available in Control Panel. InfoWorld also noted that Data Sense and Storage Sense were absent in 9888. Deskmodder’s walkthrough separately noted offline map downloads in the Settings experience and optional features that did not yet work; those observations were specific to its tested configuration.

The reported version number changed to 10.0
Build 9879 reported version 6.4, while build 9888 reported 10.0. IT之家 reported seeing 10.0.9888 in winver and Command Prompt; InfoWorld also noted the change. This was a version-label change, not evidence by itself of a large user-facing upgrade.
Was build 9888 safe or supported to install?
No. The reports described an unofficial leaked build, not a public Windows Insider release. InfoWorld columnist Woody Leonhard put the distinction plainly: “This is not an official Windows 10 Technical Preview build.” Neowin and InfoWorld cautioned that the build was unsupported and that a direct upgrade path to later preview builds might not be available. It should be understood as a historical leak, not a recommended download.
