Riot has not announced a release date or launch platforms for its League of Legends MMO. The project was still in development when Riot described a reset in March 2024, and later public comments in 2026 offered no launch window, platform list, or gameplay reveal. Here is what Riot has said—and what remains unknown—as of October 2026.
When will the League of Legends MMO come out?
Riot has not announced that yet. There is no confirmed release date or launch window. In September 2026, Riot co-founder and co-chair Marc Merrill discussed the project at PAX West, but did not give a date, according to GamesRadar’s report.
Dates circulating without a Riot announcement are speculation, not a dependable estimate. Merrill’s enthusiasm for the project is not a schedule: he described it as a difficult, ambitious undertaking, not one with a public launch target.
What platforms will the League MMO be on?
Riot has not announced that yet. No confirmed PC, console, or mobile versions have been identified, and no system requirements are available. The platforms for the existing League of Legends game do not establish which systems this separate MMO will support.

Is the League MMO still in development?
In a March 2024 update, Riot product lead Marc Merrill said, “yes, we are still working on the game.” He also said the team had reset the project’s direction because its initial vision “just wasn’t different enough from what you can play today.” The statement was reproduced in a community post; it is the clearest public account of that reset in the sources available here.
Riot’s broader ambition is to make a significant evolution of the MMO genre rather than an existing MMO “with a Runeterra coat of paint.” That describes the goal, not the finished design: Riot has not detailed how the game will play.

Why did Riot reset the MMO?
Riot said the original direction was not distinct enough from existing games. A reset meant revisiting the project’s direction rather than continuing with a vision the team did not believe stood apart. The March 2024 statement also described leadership changes, but did not present a new public design or schedule.
Merrill said the reset would mean “going dark” for a long time—“likely several years”—so the team could focus on the work. That anticipated quiet period helps explain why a lack of frequent updates, by itself, is not proof the game was cancelled.

Has Riot shown gameplay or confirmed features?
No gameplay footage or detailed feature set is established by the public comments covered here. Combat style, classes, progression, monetization, beta timing, and launch regions remain unannounced. Treat claims about these systems as unconfirmed unless Riot publishes details.
In September 2026, Merrill called the MMO “the Grail” internally, using the phrase to convey how difficult and ambitious the project is. In October 2026, he also spoke about the scope and audience challenges of making an MMO in a GamesRadar-reported interview. Neither comment announced gameplay or a launch commitment. A January 2026 report about a former World of Warcraft lead producer joining Riot likewise noted the absence of public gameplay and a clear release target (PC Gamer).

What does Riot’s silence mean?
Riot explicitly expected to share little for an extended period after the reset, saying in March 2024 that the team would likely be quiet for several years. That is a reason not to treat silence alone as confirmation of cancellation—but it is not proof of a particular development status today. Public comments in 2026 show that Riot leadership continued discussing the project, while still providing no release date, platforms, or gameplay reveal.
For updates, rely on Riot announcements rather than fan estimates or inferences from other Riot games. Riot’s January 2024 company update discusses its broader games strategy, but does not set MMO timing or platforms.
