September figures surfaced in a Statcounter search result—65.09%, 14.64%, and 8.06%, respectively—but the live page displayed August data instead. Until the tracker confirms the September period, those search-result numbers do not establish that Chrome fell or Edge and Safari rose.
What is the latest desktop browser market share?
The latest figures confirmed by the opened Statcounter worldwide desktop browser tracker in the available data are for August 2026:
| Browser | August 2026 share of worldwide desktop page views | September 2026 figure surfaced in a search result |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | 73.28% (Statcounter tracker page) | 65.09% (search result; not confirmed by the opened tracker page) |
| Edge | 10.46% (Statcounter tracker page) | 14.64% (search result; not confirmed by the opened tracker page) |
| Safari | 5.24% (Statcounter tracker page) | 8.06% (search result; not confirmed by the opened tracker page) |
The two columns should not be read as a verified month-to-month comparison: Statcounter’s search result identified September 2026, while the opened tracker showed August 2026. Check the tracker’s reporting month before treating the September values as current or using them to describe a trend.
Did Chrome lose desktop browser share in September 2026?
That is not established by the conflicting displays. The September search-result figure for Chrome is lower than the August value on the opened tracker page, while the search-result figures for Edge and Safari are higher. But until the tracker page or its monthly data confirms the September period, those differences do not support a confident claim that Chrome lost share or that the other browsers gained it.

What does Statcounter’s desktop browser share measure?
Statcounter says its tracking code is installed on more than 1 million sites and that it analyses browser and operating-system information from more than 3 billion page views per month. These are figures stated in its methodology FAQ; the FAQ does not state a publication year for them.

Statcounter says it publishes data as recorded without artificial weighting, removes bot activity, and makes a small adjustment to browser statistics for Chrome prerendering. Those are descriptions of its own methodology, not independent findings about accuracy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare browser-share figures?
For a meaningful month-to-month comparison, keep the tracker, geography, device category, chart type, and reporting months the same. In this case, the scope is worldwide desktop page views, but the September reporting period needs confirmation against the tracker. Statcounter also says figures may be corrected during a 45-day quality-assurance period after first publication, so recently published monthly numbers can change.
