On iOS, the vendor says background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, so only audio remains. That makes Android the plausible choice for unattended camera streaming, but it does not establish guaranteed 24/7 operation or a fixed runtime.
Verdict: useful on Android, not a 24/7 guarantee
Larix Broadcaster is a mobile encoder: it sends live video and audio from a phone to a streaming destination such as YouTube Live. For a hands-off camera shot, its background behavior matters more than its feature list. Softvelum’s Larix FAQ says Android background streaming is available by default and continues until the user explicitly closes the app. The same answer says that on iOS the camera and encoder are inaccessible in background mode, leaving audio only (Softvelum Larix FAQ).
Backgrounding the app, locking the screen, and closing the app are not interchangeable. The vendor’s stated Android stopping condition is explicit app closure; it does not promise what every device’s power management, thermal limits, connection, or app execution will do over a long session. The reviewed documentation establishes no guaranteed uptime or fixed maximum duration. Treat Larix as a way to keep an Android camera stream running in the background, not as proof that a phone can reliably run unattended around the clock.
Android and iPhone: what happens when you leave the app?
| Situation | Vendor-documented behavior | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|
| Android app in background or screen locked | Background streaming is available by default and works until the app is explicitly closed. | Potentially suitable for a longer camera stream, subject to the phone, power, network, and app remaining operational. |
| Android app explicitly closed | Softvelum identifies explicit closure as the point background operation ends. | Do not close the app if you expect its stream to continue. |
| iOS app in background | Softvelum says camera and encoder are unavailable; only audio remains. | Do not rely on Larix for unattended background camera video on iPhone. |
These are vendor statements, not a measured runtime test across phone models. If your stream must remain available for a long period, test the exact phone, operating system, power arrangement, network and framing you plan to use.

Set up Larix as a YouTube encoder
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key shown for the stream in Live Control Room. Larix’s documentation describes configuring a connection and using video-plus-audio mode with an appropriate bitrate. Follow the values displayed for your own YouTube stream; do not reuse a sample key or assume one ingest URL applies in every setup. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder and the Larix documentation.
- Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. Locate that stream’s server URL and stream key in its encoder settings.
- Configure Larix. In Larix Broadcaster, create a connection using the server URL and stream key from YouTube. Treat the key as a password: keep it private, and use YouTube’s controls to replace it if it is exposed.
- Choose video and audio. Set the encoder to video-plus-audio mode and select a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and the upload capacity of the connection. Larix’s documentation advises using an appropriate bitrate; the reviewed sources do not specify one universal value for every phone, network, or YouTube stream.
- Check the composition and sound. A phone tripod mount is a practical way to keep a stationary view framed, though it is not a Larix requirement. YouTube identifies an external microphone as typical streaming equipment; use one if the phone’s built-in audio is not adequate.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start the stream while you can monitor both Larix and YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube receives the expected picture and sound, then test locking the screen and moving Larix to the background. Do not close the app. A short successful test verifies the workflow, not all-day reliability.
Power, network and connection limits
Long sessions depend on more than the app’s background mode. Restream’s mobile-streaming guidance recommends beginning with a fully charged phone and using dedicated Wi-Fi for best performance (Restream, “Stream from your phone,” July 1, 2026). These are setup recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation. For a fixed stream, arrange stable power and a secure mount, and check that the phone does not overheat or lose connectivity in its intended position.

Softvelum describes different behavior under poor network conditions: RTMP and RTSP may lose frames as conditions worsen, while SRT attempts to compensate within its configured latency period (Softvelum Larix FAQ). This is a trade-off, not a promise that SRT will work in every YouTube setup. YouTube’s encoder instructions call for the server URL and key it provides; use another protocol only if that option is actually available in your account and workflow. No protocol can make a failing phone connection equivalent to a stable one.
What the Android app offers—and what that says about this use case
The Google Play listing for Larix Broadcaster describes Android support for RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, WebRTC/WHIP, NDI HX2, RTSP and RIST; H.264 and H.265/HEVC video; overlays; MP4 recording; and destinations including YouTube Live. It also lists auto-start and adaptive bitrate among Premium features. These are claims on the Android listing, not evidence of iOS feature parity or of 24/7 reliability. The listing says it was updated August 11, 2026; confirm current feature availability and plan terms in Google Play before relying on a specific Premium feature (Google Play listing).

Troubleshooting unattended phone streams
- The picture stops when you switch apps or lock the phone: Confirm you are on Android, update and configure the app, and test again without explicitly closing Larix. On iOS, the vendor says background camera video is unavailable.
- The stream stops after closing Larix: That matches Softvelum’s stated Android behavior. Keep the app running in background rather than force-closing it.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the selected Larix connection uses the matching server URL and stream key from the YouTube stream in Live Control Room. Verify that the correct stream is selected and that the key has not changed.
- Video freezes or drops frames: Check upload stability and signal where the phone is mounted. Softvelum notes RTMP/RTSP can lose frames under worsening network conditions. SRT may compensate within its configured latency window if it is supported by the chosen YouTube ingest workflow.
- The phone cannot sustain the session: Start fully charged, use a dependable power source and dedicated Wi-Fi where possible, and test the device in its final location. The cited sources do not establish a universal runtime or eliminate device-specific power and heat limits.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the requirement is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than a live phone camera, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, and it streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day.
