Choose a laptop by matching its size to how you use and carry it, then match its processor and memory to the applications you run. Screen diagonal, processor tier, and RAM capacity are useful starting points—not enough on their own. Compare the specific laptop’s dimensions, weight, CPU and graphics model, memory upgradeability, display, battery, storage, ports, and software compatibility before buying.
What size laptop should I buy?
Start with the trade-off between screen workspace and portability. A larger display gives you more room for documents, editing, and side-by-side windows; a smaller laptop is generally easier to fit in a bag and carry. Lenovo suggests considering 14 inches or smaller when maximum portability is the priority, and notes that 14 inches or larger provides more room for content. Those are general guidelines, not a rule for every user or device. Lenovo’s UK laptop buying guide explains the trade-off.
Screen size is measured diagonally, so it does not tell you exactly how large or heavy a laptop will be. Check the chassis dimensions and weight of the exact configuration, and consider whether it fits your bag and desk. Larger or higher-resolution displays can use more battery, so factor display quality and expected time away from a charger into the choice.
Is a 14-inch laptop big enough?
For many people, 14 inches is a useful middle ground: it offers more working room than a compact display without being as large as many laptops designed primarily for desk use. Whether it is enough depends on your tasks, eyesight, preferred scaling, and how often you work with multiple windows. If you regularly edit detailed images, work with large spreadsheets, or want more space for split-screen work, compare a larger display in person or check its usable resolution and dimensions. If travel weight and bag fit matter most, compare lighter, smaller models by actual weight rather than screen size alone.

Which laptop processor is right for me?
Choose a processor for the applications you expect to run, not simply because its tier name sounds faster or more prestigious. Core count, clock speed, cache, and processor architecture all affect performance; the exact model matters. Browsing, email, and document work generally place different demands on a laptop than gaming, video editing, or professional creative software. HP outlines these factors in its U.S.-focused laptop specifications explainer.
Microsoft’s buying guide organizes processor recommendations around use cases, including students, creators, gamers, and entertainment users. It also lists processor families, but the family names are not a controlled performance ranking. Check the exact CPU model in the laptop listing against the requirements of your applications and games; do not treat a broad processor-family label as proof that a computer will run a particular workload well. Microsoft’s PC and laptop buying guide provides use-case-based orientation.

Match the CPU to your workload
- Everyday tasks: For web browsing, email, video calls, and office documents, prioritize a configuration that meets the software’s requirements and feels responsive while you multitask.
- Creative work: Photo and video editing can benefit from stronger processing capability, but also check the application’s CPU and graphics requirements, memory needs, display quality, and storage.
- Gaming: Check the game’s requirements and the laptop’s specific graphics hardware as well as its processor. A CPU label alone does not establish gaming suitability.
- Specialized professional applications: Confirm compatibility and requirements for the exact software and version you use before choosing a configuration.
How much RAM do I need in a laptop?
RAM—short-term working memory for active applications and tasks—affects how comfortably a laptop handles what you have open. Microsoft gives 8–16 GB as a general buying range: its guide says 8 GB is fine for light browsing and many basic tasks, and suggests closer to 16 GB for photo or video editing. These are Microsoft’s recommendations, not universal minimum requirements; an application’s own requirements and your multitasking habits should guide the final choice. Microsoft describes RAM as “your computer’s memory, which affects its speed and performance.”
Gaming and AI-oriented profiles in Microsoft’s guide list higher memory ranges. Treat those as guidance for the use cases described, not as a blanket requirement for every laptop or a guarantee of performance. For an AI feature, an advertised hardware threshold alone does not determine whether the laptop is the right purchase.

Check whether the memory can be upgraded
Before buying, find out whether the exact model’s memory is soldered to the motherboard or can be upgraded. If it is soldered, the installed capacity may be the capacity you keep for the life of the laptop. Listings can vary by configuration even within one product family, so verify the specific model and configuration rather than relying on a general product-page description.
Check graphics, storage, display, and compatibility too
Size, processor, and memory do not tell the whole story. Check the other specifications against the work and entertainment you expect from the computer.

- Storage: Choose capacity based on how many files, applications, and games you keep locally versus in cloud storage. Also check whether the laptop uses an SSD or HDD; HP’s explainer describes their trade-offs.
- Display: Compare resolution and overall screen quality with your needs. Lenovo says Full HD is sufficient for daily computing and all but the most demanding game settings, but that is general manufacturer advice, not a universal standard for every task or preference.
- Battery: Consider how long you need to work away from a charger and remember that display size and resolution can affect battery use. Look at the stated battery information for the exact model and configuration.
- Ports and compatibility: Confirm the laptop has the connections you need for accessories and external displays, and that its operating system supports your essential software and peripherals.
Compare shortlisted laptops before you buy
Once you have narrowed the choices, compare complete configurations rather than brand names or one headline specification. A compact model with adequate memory and the right ports may suit frequent travel; a larger screen or stronger graphics may matter more for desk-based editing or gaming. Check total price alongside the trade-offs, and verify the retailer’s listing matches the model you intend to buy.
