Choose Landstalker if you want an isometric adventure built around tricky movement and platforming. Choose Alundra if you want a PlayStation action RPG that combines real-time combat with demanding puzzles and a darker, character-focused story. They share creative lineage, but Alundra is not a direct sequel.
How the gameplay differs
Both games use an isometric perspective, but they ask different things of the player. Landstalker makes judging movement through layered spaces central to play. Alundra puts more emphasis on action-RPG combat and puzzle-solving, while still making some jumps tricky to judge.

Landstalker: movement and platforming
Landstalker is the better fit if you enjoy working out how an isometric view maps onto movement and jumps. A Sega-16 history of the game describes players misjudging jumps because of the perspective, sometimes falling to lower levels and having to retrace ground. That friction is part of the experience; it may be a poor fit if precision platforming frustrates you.
Alundra: combat and puzzles
Alundra is described by its localizer, Victor Ireland, as an action RPG with jumping, weapons and items, real-time attacks, enemies, bosses, and challenging puzzles. In his PlayStation Blog retrospective, Ireland warns that the puzzles can become extremely difficult. He also notes that the faux-3D perspective can make jump decisions deceptive.

#1 Best Overall
- Alundra 2
- Great rpg from one of the greatest consoles of all time.
Which one is harder?
There is no supported overall difficulty score that makes one game categorically harder. The notable challenge differs: Landstalker is associated with movement judgment and retracing after falls, while Alundra is known for demanding puzzles as well as perspective-sensitive jumps.
Story and relationship between the games
Alundra follows a character who arrives in the village of Inoa and becomes involved in the villagers’ dreams and troubles. Ireland’s retrospective emphasizes the story’s increasingly dark stakes and its emotional focus on the people of the village; those are his critical impressions, not an objective measure.
Rank #2
- Exciting, somewhat demented RPG
- Control other characters' dreams
- Includes action, puzzles, and roleplaying
- Lengthy storyline
- For one player
The connection between the games is creative, not a shared story continuity. Ireland recalled asking, “Is this a Landstalker sequel?” and being told it was not, though some of the same staff worked on Alundra and it had the character of a spiritual successor. The Working Designs manual separately credits Landstalker’s original main programmer and scenario writer as responsible for Alundra. Neither source establishes that one game directly continues the other.
