Land Boards’ PiPicoMite is a carrier board that pairs a Raspberry Pi Pico with computer-style connections for running MMBasic: VGA video, a PS/2 keyboard, SD-card storage and audio. The PicoMite firmware provides the BASIC environment; the carrier supplies the connections. Land Boards documents three revisions, but the available product pages do not establish which revision is a newly launched board, its launch date or price, current stock, or whether a Pico is included.

What the PiPicoMite adds to a Raspberry Pi Pico

A Raspberry Pi Pico is a microcontroller module, not a desktop-style computer with built-in video and keyboard ports. PiPicoMite carrier boards add connections that let a Pico run as a small BASIC-oriented computer. Land Boards describes its VGA-focused setup as booting directly to an MMBasic prompt, where users can enter, edit, save, test and run BASIC programs.

MMBasic is the software environment, while the carrier board provides the hardware interfaces. The Pico module and carrier are distinct components: do not assume a board listing includes a Pico unless its seller explicitly says so.

What MMBasic is—and what it can do

MMBasic is a BASIC interpreter adapted to the Raspberry Pi Pico platform. Geoff Graham wrote MMBasic and its manual; Peter Mather ported the interpreter to the Pico and wrote device drivers; Mick Ames contributed the PIO compiler and documentation. VGA driver work derives from Miroslav Nemecek, according to Land Boards’ documentation.

Geoff Graham’s PicoMite User Manual describes a language with double-precision floating-point values, 64-bit integers, strings, multidimensional arrays, user-defined structures, subroutines and functions. It also describes support for Pico I/O, sensors, storage, graphics, audio and networking, and an option to embed compiled C for performance-sensitive functions. The available capabilities depend on the selected board and firmware build; a feature in the manual is not necessarily exposed by every carrier.

The manual states: “The PicoMite firmware is totally free to download and use.” That describes the firmware, not the price or availability of Land Boards hardware.

PiPicoMite revisions compared

Land Boards’ documentation covers three revisions with meaningful differences. The specifications below are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test results. Confirm the exact revision before choosing a case or assuming a particular expansion feature.

Revision Documented features Size and enclosure notes
PiPicoMite01 VGA output at 640×480 monochrome or 320×240 color with 16 colors; PS/2 keyboard input with level translation; full-size SD-card support up to 32 GB using FAT32; stereo PWM audio through a 3.5 mm jack; 16-bit MCP23017 I/O expander; power inputs and headers exposing Pico pins. Board outline: 120×70 mm. Land Boards’ product documentation.
PiPicoMite02 The Land Boards repository identifies this as the 32-bit I/O expander version and summarizes the family’s VGA, SD-card, audio and Pico setup. The cited material does not provide the same detailed specification list as the PiPicoMite01 page. 95×95 mm. Land Boards’ wiki page.
PiPicoMite03 Described by Land Boards as a reduced-cost, fully functional variant, with VGA, PS/2 keyboard, full-size SD-card support up to 32 GB using FAT32, stereo audio and USB-B power. An optional DS1307 real-time-clock / DS18B20 digital-thermometer module is described. Board: 99.5×69.5 mm. Land Boards references a 100×76×35 mm aluminum project box as a fit.

Sources: PiPicoMite01 documentation, PiPicoMite03 documentation and the Land Boards PicoMite repository. The dimensions and features are revision-specific: the I/O expander is called out for 01 and 02, while the 03 page emphasizes its reduced-cost design and enclosure fit.

What you need to run MMBasic with VGA and a keyboard

At a minimum, plan on the carrier revision you intend to use, a compatible Raspberry Pi Pico module, a VGA display, a PS/2 keyboard and a suitable power connection. Add an SD card if you want the documented removable storage, and check which cables and accessories the seller includes. The PiPicoMite01 and 03 documentation specifies full-size SD cards up to 32 GB formatted as FAT32.

Raspberry Pi lists Pico 1 with an RP2040 processor, 264 kB of on-chip SRAM, 2 MB of flash and 26 multifunction GPIO pins. Raspberry Pi’s product page, accessed October 4, 2026, says the Pico 1 series is planned to remain in production until at least January 2036. That commitment concerns the Pico module, not the Land Boards carrier.

Treedix Breakout Board for PI PICO Flexible PCB Shield Board
  • This breakout board is specially made for Raspberry Pi Pico, with additional pin headers, which are fully compatible with the board
  • The product needs to be soldered by itself, and the pico can be inserted after successful welding
  • The breakout board is gold-plated on both sides and holes are plated, and the material of the PCB board is excellent
  • The breakout board is equipped with Raspberry Pi pico, which is convenient for users to develop and integrate flexibly
  • Note: The package does not include Raspberry Pi pico. This product needs to be soldered and assembled by yourself

The PicoMite manual describes firmware for RP2040 and RP2350 processors, but firmware support alone does not prove that every Pico or third-party module physically fits a particular carrier or works with its wiring. Check the carrier’s revision, header arrangement and supported firmware build before buying or assembling parts.

Firmware setup and the file-erasure warning

Land Boards’ PiPicoMite01 guide describes installing the VGA UF2 by holding the Pico’s BOOTSEL button while connecting it over USB, then copying the UF2 file to the drive that appears. This is a guide-specific procedure, not a universal firmware recommendation for every revision or processor.

  1. Identify the exact carrier revision and the Pico module installed or planned.
  2. Use the current official PicoMite project downloads and the instructions for that carrier to select a firmware image matching the processor and feature set.
  3. Follow the applicable guide’s UF2 installation steps. The PiPicoMite01 guide’s described method is to hold BOOTSEL while connecting USB and copy the VGA UF2 to the appearing drive.
  4. Before flashing, back up any saved programs and files. The PicoMite manual warns that loading firmware may erase them.

Firmware images differ by processor and feature set, so do not choose an image simply because it is labeled PicoMite or VGA. The PicoMite User Manual and the relevant Land Boards revision instructions are the references to consult for compatibility and installation details.

Is this a newly launched board, and how much does it cost?

The documented Land Boards pages establish a PiPicoMite family with revisions 01, 02 and 03; they do not identify which one, if any, is the newly launched carrier in the title. They also do not establish an announcement date, launch price, current stock or whether a Raspberry Pi Pico is bundled. Check a current announcement or seller listing for those details rather than treating the family specifications as proof of a new release or a complete kit.
