Choose KWGT when you want discrete, resizable widgets such as clocks, calendars, music controls or system dashboards on your Android home screen. Choose KLWP when you want the wallpaper layer itself to become an animated, interactive home-screen design. The apps can also be used together, with KWGT widgets placed over a KLWP scene or another wallpaper.
KWGT and KLWP solve different customization problems
The similar names make KWGT and KLWP look like competing versions of one app, but they operate on different Android surfaces. KWGT is Kustom’s widget creator: you add a widget slot to the launcher, then design what that slot displays. KLWP is Kustom’s live-wallpaper creator: it renders a full-screen wallpaper behind icons and widgets and can react to gestures, page changes and other inputs.
Kustom describes KWGT as a tool for smaller items and KLWP as a tool for theming the screen. Its FAQ also notes that the two can be combined. See the product descriptions in Kustom’s documentation hub and the comparison in the KWGT FAQ.

What KWGT actually does
It occupies a widget slot
After you add a KWGT widget from the launcher’s widget picker, Android gives it a rectangular area. You decide what appears inside that area: text, shapes, images, progress bars, shortcuts, music information, calendar data or system values. The launcher controls the initial grid dimensions, while KWGT controls the design inside the rectangle.

It is ideal for focused information
A single glanceable component is usually easier to build and maintain as KWGT. Examples include a 4×1 music strip, a calendar agenda under the clock, a battery-and-storage panel, or a compact smart-home control surface. You can place several independent KWGT widgets on different pages if each needs its own position or behavior.
It is not a full-screen wallpaper engine
KWGT does not replace the wallpaper layer. Its output is clipped to the widget bounds supplied by Android, so a design that depends on the entire display, coordinated page transitions or wallpaper-level motion belongs in KLWP instead.
What KLWP actually does
It renders a live wallpaper
KLWP becomes the device’s live wallpaper and draws behind launcher icons and ordinary widgets. You can construct backgrounds, panels, navigation regions and interactive layers that span the available wallpaper canvas. This makes it suitable for a unified home-screen theme rather than a single information tile.

Kustom documents animation as an advantage of KLWP. A design can reveal or move elements as you swipe between launcher pages, tap areas, or trigger other supported actions. The exact result still depends on how the launcher exposes pages and live-wallpaper scrolling; no launcher handles every effect identically.
It is not added from the widget picker
You apply KLWP through the wallpaper/live-wallpaper settings path, not by dragging a widget onto the home screen. Because it owns the wallpaper layer, it should be evaluated as a screen-wide design system rather than as an animated widget.

Choose by the experience you want
Pick KWGT for a modular home screen
Start with KWGT if you want to keep your existing wallpaper and launcher arrangement while adding a few custom surfaces. It is also the more direct choice when the requirement is phrased as “make me a widget.” A music controller, date strip or at-a-glance dashboard can be moved, resized or removed without redesigning the entire screen.
Pick KLWP for a designed environment
Start with KLWP when the wallpaper is the product: a dashboard-style home screen, a cinematic scene, a swipe-driven navigation system or a layout whose parts need to animate together. The app’s full-canvas model avoids forcing a single design into several unrelated widget rectangles.
Use both when their boundaries are useful
A practical hybrid is a KLWP background with one or more KWGT widgets on top. For example, KLWP can provide the visual frame and page transitions while KWGT supplies a separate calendar or media widget that you want to position with normal launcher controls. Kustom’s FAQ explicitly allows this combined approach; read it at the KWGT FAQ.
Set up a KWGT widget without sizing surprises
- Choose the target home-screen page. Decide the approximate grid area before opening KWGT. The launcher’s grid and its interpretation of widget spans determine the rectangle Android supplies.
- Add KWGT from the launcher’s widget picker. Long-press an empty area, select Widgets, choose KWGT, and drag the desired size to the page. Menu names vary by launcher, but the operation is always performed from the launcher rather than from wallpaper settings.
- Resize the widget to its final dimensions first. Kustom advises setting the intended size before loading a preset. This gives the preset the correct aspect ratio and reduces later cropping or stretching.
- Open the widget in KWGT and load or build the design. Select a preset or create a new one, then check text wrapping, image crops, touch targets and data permissions inside the editor.
- Use the editor’s scale control for fine adjustment. If the launcher reports a slightly different rectangle than expected, adjust the preset’s scale in KWGT instead of repeatedly dragging the widget edge. Kustom’s sizing guidance is in the KWGT FAQ.
- Save, return to the home screen and test the real state. Check both portrait and landscape if you rotate the device, and verify that the widget still fits after changing the launcher’s icon or grid settings.
Set up a KLWP live wallpaper
- Plan the launcher pages first. Count the pages the design is intended to use and note whether the preset expects horizontal scrolling. The wallpaper canvas and the launcher’s page count must agree for transitions to look correct.
- Open Android’s wallpaper settings. Use the launcher or system path labelled Wallpaper, Live wallpapers or similar, then select KLWP. The exact wording differs among Android versions and manufacturers.
- Load or create the KLWP preset. Build the background, groups, navigation areas and animated layers in the KLWP editor. Keep important controls away from launcher icons and system gesture areas.
- Set the intended number of home screens. Kustom’s KLWP guidance recommends matching the launcher’s screen count to the preset. If the preset expects three pages but the launcher exposes one, page-based animations and positioning can fail.
- Enable wallpaper scrolling when the launcher offers that option. Scrolling requires a sufficiently large wallpaper image/canvas and launcher support. Some launchers disable or limit scrolling, so test swipes on the actual device rather than assuming the setting is honored.
- Apply the wallpaper and test every interaction. Confirm page changes, touch actions, animation timing and icon readability. Kustom documents launcher-dependent behavior and troubleshooting in the KLWP FAQ.
Launcher behavior is part of the result
Why KWGT can look too small or too large
Android widgets do not receive a universal physical size. A launcher reports a span in its own grid, and manufacturers can calculate that span differently. Two phones can therefore give the same KWGT preset different pixel dimensions. Resize the widget first, then use KWGT’s scale setting for the final correction. Changing the launcher grid after finishing the design may require another adjustment.
Why KLWP pages may not scroll
KLWP needs a wallpaper canvas large enough for the intended movement, and the launcher must expose horizontal wallpaper scrolling. Some launchers offer a “scroll wallpaper” switch; others restrict scrolling or treat live wallpapers differently. The KLWP FAQ notes that behavior varies by launcher, so a static result is not automatically an error in the preset.

How to isolate a launcher problem
- Temporarily switch to the launcher’s default wallpaper or a simple KLWP preset.
- Check whether the launcher has disabled wallpaper scrolling or uses a fixed wallpaper position.
- Verify that the number of launcher screens matches the preset’s page configuration.
- For KWGT, remove and re-add the widget after changing grid dimensions, then resize before reopening the preset.
Animation, refresh and battery expectations
Why KLWP is the animation choice
KLWP is a live wallpaper, so its animation model is designed for movement across the wallpaper canvas. It can coordinate multiple elements as part of one scene, subject to launcher and device behavior.

Why KWGT is not a per-second animation engine
Kustom explains that Android widgets do not know whether they are currently visible. The company disables KWGT’s per-second update feature to reduce battery or performance problems, particularly with complex presets. That is a platform and performance limitation described by Kustom, not an independent battery test. Read the explanation in the KWGT FAQ.
For a clock or progress display, design around the update behavior the widget framework permits rather than expecting continuous wallpaper-style motion. If smooth, coordinated movement is essential, move that portion of the design to KLWP.
Android support, versions and distribution
Documented Android baseline
Kustom’s FAQ says its apps use features available from Android 4.4 onward. This is the baseline stated in the documentation, not a guarantee that every current build, device manufacturer or launcher will behave identically. Check the current store listing and your device’s Android version before installing. The baseline is documented in the KWGT FAQ.
Current version information is date-sensitive
The official KWGT downloads page listed stable version 3.82, build 3.82b621115, uploaded 2026-07-30. That is a dated listing and may be superseded when you read this. Verify the live entry at Kustom’s KWGT downloads page before relying on the version number or troubleshooting a version-specific behavior.

AOSP and Huawei variants
Kustom lists AOSP and Huawei variants of KWGT and KLWP. Its downloads documentation says these variants are ad-supported and do not require Google Services or a Pro key. Availability and feature details can change, so consult the current Kustom downloads page for the edition that matches your device.
Prices and Pro terms
The official pages reviewed do not establish a single current price for every region, store or edition. Do not assume that a price seen elsewhere applies to your country; check the current store listing and the purchase terms shown for your device.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The KWGT preset is clipped
- Resize the widget to the intended grid span before loading the preset.
- Open the preset’s scale control and reduce or increase it to fit the supplied rectangle.
- Check whether the launcher changed its grid, icon size or edge padding.
- Re-add the widget after changing those launcher settings, because the old slot may retain its previous dimensions.
The KWGT display is stale
- Confirm that the launcher has not restricted background activity for Kustom.
- Check the preset’s data permissions, such as calendar or music access.
- Remember that Android widgets are not visibility-aware and that Kustom disables per-second updates for performance reasons; use a KLWP scene if continuous animation is the requirement.
KLWP does not move between pages
- Ensure the launcher has more than one home screen and that its wallpaper-scrolling option is enabled when available.
- Match the launcher’s page count to the preset.
- Test with the launcher’s default scrolling behavior; some launchers intentionally pin wallpapers or handle live wallpapers differently.
- Review Kustom’s launcher-specific notes in the KLWP FAQ.
Animations or touch actions behave differently on another phone
Check the launcher, Android version, screen dimensions and gesture configuration before changing the preset. KLWP depends on wallpaper and launcher integration, while KWGT depends on the widget rectangle reported by the launcher. A design can therefore require per-device scaling or page adjustments even when the preset itself is unchanged.
Practical choices for common layouts
Minimal information screen
Use KWGT for a single clock, date and weather block. It leaves the wallpaper and launcher untouched and lets you move the block independently.
Music-focused home page
Use KWGT when the player controls should occupy a predictable strip. Use KLWP when the album art, background and controls should animate as one full-screen composition.

Multi-page dashboard
Use KLWP when swiping between pages is part of the navigation model. Confirm the launcher page count and scrolling support before investing time in detailed transitions.
Existing live wallpaper plus custom data
Use KWGT over the existing wallpaper. This keeps the live wallpaper intact while adding a calendar, system panel or shortcut surface in a normal widget slot.
Complete visual redesign
Use KLWP as the foundation, then add KWGT only where an independent widget rectangle is more convenient than another wallpaper layer.

KWGT is the right first install for custom widgets: clocks, calendars, music displays and system information that should live in movable home-screen rectangles. KLWP is the right first install when the wallpaper itself should become an animated, interactive theme spanning the home screen. If your layout needs both a designed background and independent widget modules, use KLWP for the scene and KWGT for the overlays, then tune each one to the launcher’s actual sizing and scrolling behavior.
