What is Kubuntu 22.04 LTS?
Kubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor that uses the KDE Plasma desktop. The initial Jammy Jellyfish release paired a 5.15-based Linux kernel with KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS, KDE Frameworks 5.92, and KDE Gear 21.12.3. It also included refreshed versions of common applications such as Firefox, VLC, LibreOffice, and Thunderbird. The Kubuntu Team announced the release on April 21, 2022.
What was new in KDE Plasma 5.24?
Kubuntu 22.04 initially shipped Plasma 5.24.4, the fourth scheduled bug-fix release in the Plasma 5.24 series. KDE characterized Plasma 5.24 LTS as emphasizing smoother usability, visual consistency, and ease of use. Its notable features included:
- Overview: A workspace view for seeing and managing virtual desktops and open applications.
- KRunner help: Help assistance surfaced through KRunner, Plasma’s search and command launcher.
- Fingerprint authentication: Support for using a fingerprint reader to authenticate, where compatible hardware and configuration are available.
- Picture of the day: An option to use a changing daily image as the desktop wallpaper.

How long is Kubuntu 22.04 supported?
Kubuntu’s flavor support period for this release was three years, ending in April 2025. What changed later: Plasma 5.27 through Backports
Kubuntu later made Plasma 5.27 LTS available for Jammy through its Backports PPA. The project distinguished that newer desktop stack from the original Plasma 5.24 packages, which users could keep for the more-tested 22.04 base. The practical choice was newer Plasma features and packages versus remaining with the original stack. - Write the image to a USB flash drive using an image-writing utility. This erases existing data on the selected drive, so copy off anything you need first.
- Restart the target computer and select the USB drive in its boot menu or firmware boot settings.
- Follow the on-screen installer prompts. Choose the installation options that match your needs, and confirm the target disk carefully before allowing changes.
