The extraction shooter never had a full release; player access was limited to closed-alpha tests.
Why was PUBG: Black Budget cancelled?
In its official Steam development update, PUBG Studios said it reviewed the project’s status and future direction and concluded that its current direction would not allow it to deliver a long-term experience players could enjoy. The studio did not name an individual as the speaker of that institutional statement.
PUBG Studios thanked people who took part in the closed alphas and shared feedback. It also said lessons from development and testing would inform future projects, but did not identify a successor game or announce what would happen to the developers who worked on Black Budget.
Was Black Budget released?
No. The game did not reach full release. The documented access was through closed-alpha tests, including a second alpha scheduled for June 26–29, 2026, according to notices on the official Steam announcements page. In the development update, PUBG Studios said: “We sincerely thank everyone who took the time to participate in our Closed Alpha tests and share their feedback.”

What kind of game was Black Budget?
Aju Press described Black Budget as a PvPvE extraction shooter set on Coli, an island trapped in a time loop. Players were planned to enter as contractors, gather loot, contend with rival teams, AI creatures, and supernatural anomalies, then try to extract. Aju Press reported matches of up to 45 players in three-person squads; that was a planned match format, not a tested outcome.
Was the game cancelled less than a year after it was announced?
That framing applies to the game’s public branding as PUBG: Black Budget, not to the project’s entire history. Aju Press reported that Krafton first disclosed the project as Project Black Budget in its third-quarter 2022 earnings materials, while the PUBG name was attached in November 2025. PUBG Studios announced the end of development on October 1, 2026—less than a year after that late-2025 naming, but nearly four years after the project’s initial disclosure.
