Kodi 21.0 “Omega” reached stable release on April 6, 2024. It introduced the multimedia foundation’s move to FFmpeg 6 after more than 15 months of development and over 3,750 commits since Kodi 20.0 “Nexus.” Because later maintenance builds replaced the original release, install the newest compatible Kodi 21.x version offered through Kodi’s official download channels rather than seeking the launch-day 21.0 package.
What the Omega milestone means
Team Kodi reported more than 3,750 commits between the availability of Kodi 20.0 “Nexus” on January 15, 2023, and Omega’s 21.0 launch. The stable release was pushed to Kodi’s download pages and app stores on April 6, 2024.
The headline engineering change was an upgrade to FFmpeg 6, the multimedia framework Kodi relies on for handling audio and video. Developers said the work lasted more than 15 months: it initially targeted FFmpeg 5 and was then updated to FFmpeg 6.
What else changed in Kodi 21
- Python and binary add-on APIs were updated.
- Skinning capabilities received new features, which can require skin updates.
- Dependencies were updated across most or all supported Kodi platforms.
- Static-analysis fixes addressed code-quality and safety issues.
- Database-migration fixes were included to improve upgrade reliability.
These changes make Omega a broad platform release rather than a single codec update. Add-ons, skins and databases are part of the upgrade surface, so compatibility matters alongside the core application.

Which Kodi 21 build should you download?
The original “download it now” message applied to Kodi 21.0 in April 2024. The maintained release history subsequently lists three Omega point releases:
| Version | Release date | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Kodi 21.0 | April 6, 2024 | Original stable Omega release; superseded by later fixes |
| Kodi 21.1 | August 18, 2024 | Later maintenance build |
| Kodi 21.2 | January 19, 2025 | Later maintenance build |
| Kodi 21.3 | December 13, 2025 | Newest Omega build listed in the supplied release history |
Open Kodi’s official download route, choose your operating system or hardware, and select the newest compatible 21.x package shown there. Exact device support can change by platform, architecture and distribution, so use the choices presented for your device instead of assuming every Kodi build supports every system.
Upgrade checks before installing
- Back up your Kodi profile if your library, settings or add-ons are important. A major-version migration can alter databases and add-on behavior.
- Check add-on compatibility. Omega includes Python and binary API changes; an add-on that worked on Nexus may need an updated release.
- Check your skin. New skinning features can leave third-party skins temporarily incompatible.
- Prefer stable builds. Beta 3 guidance warned that the FFmpeg 6 core change could cause regressions. That warning described prerelease testing, not a finding that the final stable release was unsafe.
Android installation and skin caveat
When 21.0 launched, Kodi noted that Android users might receive it sooner by sideloading the official package or joining the Google Play testing track while store processing finished. Store availability depends on the channel and timing, so use Kodi’s current Android instructions and only install packages intended for your device.
Team Kodi also warned that alternative skins might not yet be updated. If your skin is essential, check with its developer before upgrading; Kodi suggested disabling automatic updates when preserving skin compatibility was more important than receiving the newest build immediately.

Is Kodi free, and do you need special hardware?
Kodi is free and open source, and downloading the application does not require a paid product. It runs on multiple operating systems and hardware platforms. A Raspberry Pi can be used in a home-media setup, but the board and accessories are optional rather than a requirement for Kodi.
Stable Omega versus development builds
For normal viewing, choose a stable 21.x release from Kodi’s official channels. Development and beta builds are intended for testing and can expose regressions—particularly around a foundational dependency change such as FFmpeg 6. If you test a prerelease, keep a backup and expect that add-ons or skins may lag behind.
What to do if an upgrade causes problems
- Confirm that the installed package matches your operating system, processor architecture and distribution.
- Update Kodi add-ons and your skin from their maintained sources.
- Temporarily switch to Kodi’s default skin to distinguish a skin problem from a core application problem.
- Restore the profile backup if a database migration or configuration change damaged your library setup.
- If the issue remains, reproduce it on the latest stable 21.x build rather than on an older 21.0 installer or a prerelease build.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Omega’s defining milestone was the move to FFmpeg 6, supported by extensive API, add-on, skin, dependency and database work. Do not stop at the original 21.0 installer: use the newest compatible Kodi 21.x release available through Kodi’s official download channels, and verify add-on and skin support before upgrading.
