Start with Kingdom Hearts, continue through the numbered games and story entries in the sequence below, and finish with Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind. The list focuses on the principal console games and story experiences; it does not claim to place every mobile or browser release in a definitive date-by-date chronology.
Kingdom Hearts games in release order
This practical first-playthrough sequence follows the order in which the principal console games and their major story entries were introduced. It preserves the series’ intended reveal order better than rearranging the games by when their events happen in the story.

- Kingdom Hearts — The series began on PlayStation 2 in March 2002, according to Square Enix’s 2025 annual report. The later Final Mix edition is included in HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX.
- Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories — For players using the modern collections, play Re:Chain of Memories, the remake included in HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX.
- Kingdom Hearts II — The collection version is Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix.
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days — The original is a Nintendo DS game. HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX supplies an HD cutscene compilation, not the playable DS game.
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep — Play the Final Mix version included in HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX.
- Kingdom Hearts Re:coded — Like 358/2 Days, this began as a Nintendo DS game; the collection includes an HD cutscene compilation rather than a playable remake.
- Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance — Play the HD version included in HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – — This short playable experience is also part of HD 2.8.
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover — Watch this story movie in HD 2.8. It is a movie, not a playable game.
- Kingdom Hearts III, then Re Mind — Re Mind is the additional chapter associated with Kingdom Hearts III; Square Enix says it unfolds during the climax of the main game. It is included in the announced Collection [I~III] bundle.
- Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory — This later series entry appears in Square Enix’s official lineup. Place it after III and Re Mind for a broad release-oriented playthrough. The official pages cited here do not establish its exact placement relative to every mobile story release.
Square Enix describes Kingdom Hearts as an action role-playing game series developed and published by Square Enix under Tetsuya Nomura’s direction. The series brings Disney and Square Enix together, as noted on the company’s official series overview.
What the collections include—and what they do not
The collections make the sequence easier to assemble, but their contents are not all playable games. Square Enix’s HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX product page calls it a collection of the first six stories. Its six entries are:
#1 Best Overall

- A value packed bundle featuring three collections: KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC).

- GAME-KEY CARD. 128 GB – Full game download via internet required.
- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix — playable game
- Re:Chain of Memories — playable game
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix — playable game
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days — HD cutscene compilation

In particular, purchasing HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX does not give you playable HD remakes of 358/2 Days or Re:coded. Their collection versions present story scenes, not the original DS gameplay.
HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue groups three experiences:

The official Square Enix announcement describes Collection [I~III] as bringing together HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. It is announced for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store on Windows, with a release date of October 8, 2026. As of October 4, 2026, that release date is still in the future. Square Enix says the bundle is planned in physical and digital formats; the physical version requires an internet connection to download additional data. Store listings and formats can differ by region, so check the listing for your country and platform.
Release order is not story chronology
Release order follows when the games and story experiences were introduced. In-universe chronology instead moves prequels earlier in the fictional timeline. That can be an interesting way to revisit the series, but it changes the sequence in which the audience encounters revelations and context. For a first playthrough, the release-oriented order above is the safer choice.

Rank #3
- The latest installment in the beloved Kingdom Hearts series, Re:Coded unites Sora, Mickey, Donald, Goofy and a host of familiar faces from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy once again for an exciting new adventure
- All-new features include a new character growth system created specifically for the Nintendo DS release, building on the series' immersive blend of action and role-playing elements
- Guide Sora like never before through exciting new boss battles
- Players can design their own avatar using over 800 unlockable parts and trade playable maps with friends
- Varied gameplay inspired by side-scrolling, shooting and classic Final Fantasy games
There is no single date-by-date master order established by the official sources cited here for every regional launch, remake, Final Mix edition, HD remaster, and mobile or browser story. This guide therefore uses a console-focused sequence rather than presenting a falsely precise chronology for every release. Square Enix’s official series lineup is useful for checking the titles it currently lists. A secondary 2022 guide also presents a release-oriented sequence, but it is not an official play-order recommendation: MeriStation’s guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Platform and format checks before you buy
- Check whether an entry is playable. In HD 1.5+2.5, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are cutscene compilations; in HD 2.8, χ Back Cover is a movie.
- Distinguish Switch editions. Square Enix’s 2022 Nintendo Switch announcement described the three Switch volumes as cloud versions, collectively containing ten games and cinematic experiences. Those older cloud editions are not automatically equivalent to the announced Switch 2 Collection [I~III]. See the 2022 Switch cloud announcement and verify the exact listing for the console you own.
- Check the regional listing and download needs. The new collection is announced for physical and digital formats, but the physical version requires an internet connection to download additional data. Confirm the relevant regional SKU, platform, and storage requirements with the store listing before purchase.
Square Enix reported more than 38 million global package shipments and digital sales for the series as of the end of June 2025. That is a sales-and-shipment figure, not a count of individual players, as specified in the company’s 2025 annual report.
