On the Kindle 11th Generation, the power button is on the bottom edge beside the USB-C port. Press it briefly to wake or put the reader to sleep. To turn off the screen, hold it for 9 seconds and choose Screen Off; to restart a frozen Kindle, use Amazon’s separate 40-second hold procedure. Button placement and options can vary by model, so check your Kindle’s guide if its layout differs.

Where is the Kindle power button?

For the Kindle 11th Generation, Amazon’s control diagram shows the power button on the bottom edge, beside the USB-C/power port. Find it near the port rather than along the side of the e-reader. See Amazon’s Kindle 11th-generation setup and control guide.

That position is documented for this model, not every Kindle. If your device has a different shape or port arrangement, use its model-specific guide rather than assuming the button is in the same place.

Wake or put your Kindle to sleep

Press the power button briefly once to put the Kindle to sleep. When the reader is asleep, another brief press wakes it. Amazon recommends putting the device to sleep when you have finished reading; this is different from turning the screen off or restarting the Kindle. Amazon’s power and battery guidance describes the short-press action.

Turn off the screen on the 11th-generation Kindle

On the 11th-generation model covered by Amazon’s setup instructions, hold the power button for 9 seconds until the Power dialog appears, then select Screen Off. This is Amazon’s screen-off instruction for that model. It does not establish a universal full-shutdown procedure for every Kindle.

Restart a frozen or slow Kindle

Amazon recommends restarting to address intermittent issues such as a frozen screen or slow performance. Keep the Kindle charged while you do this. Amazon’s restart instructions describe the following procedure:

  1. Press and hold the power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank.
  2. Continue holding the button for 40 seconds, then release it.
  3. Wait a few seconds. The charge indicator should turn back on as the Kindle reboots.

Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance also says to keep the reader charged during a restart. If the Kindle has little or no charge, use a compatible charging cable for its port before or during the procedure; a cable can provide power but will not repair a damaged button. Amazon’s restart troubleshooting provides further guidance.

Sleep, Screen Off, and restart are different actions

Goal Action Model scope
Sleep or wake Briefly press the power button once Amazon’s general battery guidance; check your model’s guide if controls differ
Screen Off Hold for 9 seconds, then choose Screen Off in the Power dialog Kindle 11th Generation setup instructions
Restart Hold until the dialog appears or the screen goes blank, continue holding for 40 seconds, then release Amazon’s restart instructions

The two timed holds serve different purposes: 9 seconds opens the documented Screen Off option on the 11th-generation Kindle; the 40-second procedure is for restarting. Do not treat the Screen Off menu choice as a universal shutdown command.

If the Kindle still does not respond

If the reader remains unresponsive after a charged restart, or the button appears damaged, the official steps do not establish that another cable or restart will resolve a hardware fault. Contact Amazon Customer Support for service guidance. Amazon’s safety document for the 10th Generation also directs devices needing service to Customer Support; its control details should not be used to infer button placement on newer models.
