Choose the Kobo Clara BW if you want a compact 6-inch reader with an explicit IPX8 limit; choose the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite if you prefer a larger 7-inch display or already use Amazon’s Kindle store. Kobo’s product page specifies protection for up to 60 minutes in 2 metres of water. Amazon’s announcement calls its 2024 Paperwhite waterproof but does not give a depth or duration, so the two claims should not be treated as equivalent. Kobo also sells the 6-inch Clara Colour for readers who want colour.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Kobo Clara BW for a compact black-and-white reader
The Clara BW’s 6-inch screen makes it the smaller option beside the 7-inch Paperwhite. Kobo lists a 174 g weight, 16GB of storage, ComfortLight PRO and IPX8 protection up to 60 minutes in 2 metres of water. Pick it if portability, warm colour-temperature adjustment and a clearly stated water-exposure limit matter more than a larger screen.
Choose the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite for more page area or Amazon’s store
The 2024 Paperwhite’s 7-inch screen gives you more display area than either Clara. It is a sensible fit if you prefer larger text or already buy and manage books through Amazon. Amazon’s announcement lists 16GB of storage and up to three months of battery life, but these are claims for that generation, not a guarantee for every Paperwhite or reading pattern. Verify the model and edition on the live listing before buying.

Choose Kobo Clara Colour when colour matters
Clara Colour has a 6-inch Kaleido 3 display. Kobo specifies 300 PPI for black-and-white content and 150 PPI for colour content. It suits readers who value colour covers, illustrations or highlights; if you mostly read text and do not need colour, the BW model avoids paying for a feature you may not use. Kobo also lists IPX8 protection up to 60 minutes in 2 metres for Clara Colour.
How to compare their waterproofing fairly
Both product families include waterproof models, but do not assume every Kindle or Kobo is waterproof. The specific Kobo models documented by Kobo are Clara BW (N365) and Clara Colour (N367). Their product pages state IPX8 protection up to 60 minutes in 2 metres of water. Amazon describes the 2024 Paperwhite as waterproof, but its cited announcement does not state a depth or duration. That means Kobo supplies a more specific published limit in these sources; it does not establish that the Paperwhite has an identical test limit.

Waterproofing is not a reason to deliberately expose an e-reader to water beyond its stated conditions. Check the exact model’s current manufacturer listing and handling guidance, especially if comparing a different Paperwhite generation or a different Kobo model. Kobo’s product wording is a manufacturer claim, not an independent certification report.
Screen size, sharpness and lighting
The main size decision is straightforward: the 7-inch Paperwhite offers more page area, while either 6-inch Clara is easier to carry. A bigger screen can make room for larger text with less page turning, but the better choice depends on your preferred font size and how you hold or carry the reader.

For black-and-white reading, Clara BW uses E Ink Carta 1300 HD at 1448 × 1072 resolution. Clara Colour uses Kaleido 3 and has different stated pixel densities for monochrome and colour content. Do not read its 150 PPI colour figure as the sharpness of black-and-white text, which Kobo rates at 300 PPI.
Lighting features also differ by model and edition. Kobo lists adjustable brightness and colour temperature under ComfortLight PRO on Clara BW. Amazon’s 2024 announcement specifies an auto-adjusting front light for the Paperwhite Signature Edition; confirm that edition rather than assuming the feature applies to every Paperwhite. Automatic brightness adjustment and warm-light colour-temperature control are distinct capabilities.

Check your books and library access before switching
The device comparison alone cannot establish whether your existing books will work. Kobo lists native formats including EPUB, EPUB3 and PDF for Clara Colour, but file-format support does not by itself guarantee that a purchased or borrowed book can be transferred: store restrictions, DRM, lending service and country support can matter. Kobo audiobooks are available only in select countries.
- Identify the ebook store and library service you use, then check its current support for the exact device and your country.
- For purchased books, verify the format and DRM or account restrictions before assuming they can move between ecosystems.
- If audiobooks matter, check local service availability and whether you need a separate app or subscription.
A complete, current country-by-country comparison of Kindle and Kobo lending and DRM support is not established by the cited material. Confirm compatibility against the titles and services you actually use before changing brands.

Price and accessories
Prices vary by market, date and edition. Kobo’s US Clara BW page displayed $159.99 when accessed in 2026, but that is a time-specific listing, not a durable price comparison. Recheck live prices for the same country and comparable configurations; the cited Amazon product page was unavailable for verification, so no current Paperwhite price can be stated here.
Kobo’s official pages list a Clara BW/Colour SleepCover and a clear case. These are optional accessories; check the listing’s compatibility statement for your exact Clara model. The cited Amazon announcement does not establish a specific compatible Paperwhite case.
Bottom line
For a compact waterproof black-and-white reader with an explicitly stated IPX8 limit and adjustable warm lighting, the Kobo Clara BW is the clearest fit. For a larger screen or an existing commitment to Amazon’s Kindle store, consider the 2024 Paperwhite, checking the current generation and edition. If colour is a real reading need, compare the Clara Colour’s 150 PPI colour specification with the sharper monochrome display before deciding.
