Start with where you get your books
Choose Kindle if your reading life is already on Amazon
Amazon identifies the Kindle store and Kindle Unlimited as Colorsoft’s reading ecosystem. If your purchased library or subscription is already there, that familiarity may outweigh Kobo’s extra controls. The cited Amazon announcement does not establish a comparable, location-by-location account of library borrowing, so check the services available where you live before choosing based on borrowing.
Choose Kobo if supported library borrowing is important
Kobo lists OverDrive/Libby ebook borrowing, but availability is limited to select countries and the books you can borrow depend on your library’s catalog. Confirm that both the service and your library work with the device in your location; the feature is not a guarantee that every library book will be available.

Kobo also offers its own ebook store and audiobooks over Bluetooth. Audiobook availability is country-limited, so confirm local access if listening is part of your decision.
What color E Ink looks like in practice
Both devices have 7-inch color E Ink displays, but color E Ink is not a tablet-style screen. It is suited to color covers, illustrations, comics, and other material prepared in color; it does not add color to a page that was made in black and white. Kobo states explicitly that its screen does not “colourize” black-and-white pages or images.

Kobo publishes a resolution distinction: 300 PPI for black-and-white content and 150 PPI for color content. Amazon’s cited announcement gives the Colorsoft’s screen size but does not state comparable pixel-density figures, so the published specifications do not support a like-for-like resolution comparison.
If your main reading is novels and other mostly monochrome text, color may be a useful extra rather than a reason to expect a different reading experience. If you regularly read illustrated material, inspect examples on the device if possible and set expectations for muted E Ink color rather than bright tablet color.

Buttons, notes, and one-handed reading
Kobo’s physical page-turn buttons and orientation options
The Libra Colour has physical page-turn buttons, plus screen rotation and landscape mode. Those controls make it the more explicit fit for someone who wants to turn pages without tapping the display or switch how the reader is held. The cited source confirms these features but does not establish a specific comfort advantage for every hand size or grip.
Handwriting on Kobo; colored highlights on Kindle
The Libra Colour supports the separately sold Kobo Stylus 2 for handwriting, drawing, and ebook markup. Include the stylus in your budget if writing on the screen is part of the plan; Kobo also sells model-specific SleepCovers, which are optional accessories.

Amazon documents four highlight colors—yellow, orange, blue, and pink—and searching highlights by color. That is useful for organizing marked passages, but the cited announcement does not establish stylus handwriting or drawing on the Colorsoft. Do not treat colored highlights as equivalent to handwritten notes.

Kobo’s “up to 40 days” estimate is based on 30 minutes of reading each day, front light at 30%, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off. Amazon advertises “up to eight weeks” for Colorsoft but does not supply the same conditions in the cited 2024 announcement. These estimates cannot establish which lasts longer in equivalent use.

How to make the final choice
- Check your book sources. Identify whether you primarily buy or subscribe through Amazon, use Kobo’s store, or rely on a library. Verify country and library support for OverDrive/Libby and audiobook access where applicable.
- Decide whether you need handwriting or buttons. If you want physical page-turn controls or stylus-based writing and markup, the Libra Colour has those documented features. Factor in the separate stylus cost if needed.
- Match the screen to your reading. Both are 7-inch color E Ink readers. Color appears on content designed for color; it will not transform monochrome pages.
- Compare current local total cost. Check current prices for the reader and any desired accessories, such as the Kobo Stylus 2 or a SleepCover. The 2024 US launch prices are not current-price quotes.
