An October 3, 2026 report says Kerala is renaming its IT department the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Future Technologies. The change is described as a signal of greater attention to AI and other emerging technologies. However, the government department website consulted still uses its existing name, and the formal order and effective date have not been established. The reported rename should therefore be treated as a reported change, not a confirmed effective administrative name.

What is Kerala’s IT department’s reported new name?

The Balanced News reported on October 3, 2026 that the department would be called the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Future Technologies. Its article says the name reflects broader attention to AI and emerging technologies, summarizing coverage attributed to News18 and The Hindu. The underlying government order was not located, so the report does not establish when the name takes effect or whether it has formally taken effect. The Balanced News report

What name does the official website use?

The Government of Kerala’s department website consulted identifies the agency as the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. Its organizational profile describes areas including technology parks, artificial intelligence, data analytics, blockchain and fintech, the Internet of Things, and e-mobility. The department site also presents government e-services, digital service delivery, and technology infrastructure among its work. Those materials document the existing remit, but do not verify the reported new name or show that the department’s responsibilities have changed. Official department website

Why is the department reportedly being renamed?

The report presents the new title as reflecting wider attention to AI and emerging technologies. That stated rationale fits a broader policy direction, but the policy context is not independent proof of the specific reason for the rename.

Kerala’s IT Policy 2026 sets out an ambition to develop a knowledge economy and innovation hub, referring to high-speed connectivity, high-tech sectors, and startup development. The policy offers context for the department’s technology emphasis; it does not itself confirm the new name, an effective date, or changes to the department’s remit.

Is the department rename the same as Kerala becoming Keralam?

No. The reported department rename and the state’s name-alteration process are separate matters. On February 24, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to alter the state’s name from “Kerala” to “Keralam.” The government release described further legislative steps as still to follow, so Cabinet approval alone did not establish that the full process was complete. Press Information Bureau release

A Kerala government circular index later listed instructions dated September 5, 2026, and uploaded September 8, 2026, for updating government websites, portals, applications, and other digital systems in response to the state-name alteration. That administrative update is not evidence that the IT department’s reported new name has formally taken effect. Directorate of Technical Education circular index
