The biggest Plasma 6 change is foundational: KDE moved the desktop to Qt 6 and made Wayland the default graphical session in Plasma 6.0, while retaining X11 as an option. The releases that followed added remote-desktop controls, session-restoration work, better HDR and color management, built-in drawing-tablet tools, and broader accessibility support. The result is a familiar KDE desktop with a newer graphics and display stack rather than a completely redesigned operating system.
What changed in Plasma 6.0?
Plasma 6.0, announced by KDE on February 28, 2024, established the technical base for the 6.x series. It upgraded the toolkit from Qt 5 to Qt 6 and selected Wayland as the default session. KDE said X11 support would continue, so users can still choose it when a driver, application or workflow requires it.
Wayland and Qt 6 are platform changes, not guarantees that every program will behave identically. Actual results depend on the Linux distribution, graphics driver, compositor, monitor and applications in use. KDE’s stated goal was to improve support for modern hardware and leave room for future desktop improvements while preserving the familiar Plasma workflow.
The most visible desktop and navigation improvements
Overview and Desktop Grid became one effect
KDE combined the Overview and Desktop Grid effects into a single workspace view and substantially improved its touchpad gestures. The combined view is intended to make switching between windows and virtual desktops more coherent. KDE’s launch announcement described it this way: “We combined the Overview and Desktop Grid effects into one and massively improved its touchpad gestures.”

A floating panel with “Dodge Windows”
The Plasma panel floats by default in Plasma 6.0. Its settings include a “Dodge Windows” mode that hides the panel when a window reaches it, then reveals it again when the obstruction is gone. These are configurable defaults, so users who prefer the traditional fixed panel can change the behavior.
Refreshed Breeze styling
The Breeze visual style was updated with fewer frames, more consistent spacing and a cleaner hierarchy. System Settings was reorganized to reduce deeply nested pages, making commonly used controls easier to locate without changing the underlying breadth of Plasma configuration.
New interaction defaults
Plasma 6.0 introduced several defaults that may be noticeable after an upgrade:

KDE’s Plasma 6 announcement reported that searching recent documents could be more than 200% faster, searching for an application up to 60% faster, and Plasma Search could use up to 30% fewer CPU cycles. HDR and color management arrived in stages
What Plasma 6.0 introduced
On Wayland, Plasma 6.0 offered partial HDR support and allowed an ICC profile to be set for each display. KDE noted that applications were still limited to the sRGB color space at launch. That made the feature a foundation for color-managed workflows rather than a claim that every application was immediately HDR-aware.

What Plasma 6.2 improved
Plasma 6.2 reported more complete support for the Wayland color-management protocol, better brightness handling for HDR and ICC profiles, improved HDR performance, and tone mapping in KWin. Tone mapping helps the compositor adapt content to a display’s capabilities, but it does not remove the need for compatible hardware, drivers and applications.
For HDR or color-critical work, check the Plasma version supplied by your distribution and the support provided by the specific monitor, graphics stack and application. KDE’s release announcements describe features introduced by the project; they do not establish universal compatibility across Linux configurations.
What Plasma 6.1 added
Remote Plasma sessions from System Settings
Plasma 6.1 added controls that let users start a remote Plasma desktop from System Settings. A client such as KRDC can then connect to that session. This is useful for remote support or accessing a graphical workspace, but the practical experience still depends on network conditions, authentication and the desktop’s remote-access setup.

Wayland session restoration was work in progress
KDE introduced Wayland session restoration in 6.1 so the desktop could reopen applications from a previous session. In the June 18, 2024 announcement, KDE explicitly described this work as in progress. Treat it as an evolving convenience rather than a promise that every application will restore its windows, documents or exact state.
Small but useful workflow refinements
- Edit Mode gained a zooming animation, making the transition into panel and widget editing more apparent.
- On supported keyboards, keyboard LED colors can synchronize with the desktop accent color.
- KDE highlighted Explicit Sync and triple buffering among its Wayland improvements.
Plasma 6.2 focused on creative work, power and accessibility
Built-in drawing-tablet support
Plasma 6.2 added a Drawing Tablet settings area with tools that previously often required manufacturer software or extra drivers. It includes a calibration wizard and test mode, mapping the tablet to an entire display or a selected part of it, and remapping pen buttons to mouse clicks. These controls are especially useful when a tablet spans multiple monitors or when a pen’s physical buttons need a different workflow.
More control over sleep and power profiles
Users can override applications that block sleep or screen locking. Plasma 6.2 also exposed power-profile controls, making it easier to select a performance-oriented or power-saving mode without relying solely on distribution-specific utilities.

Accessibility changes
The accessibility settings page was overhauled. Plasma 6.2 added colorblindness filters and full sticky-keys support on Wayland, extending keyboard access options beyond the older X11-focused experience.

KDE contributor Nate Graham’s January 11, 2025 roundup described selected final features for Plasma 6.3, rather than a complete changelog. Examples include a single summary notification for alerts missed while Do Not Disturb was enabled, GPU-statistics collection by System Monitor on FreeBSD, and a refinement that makes the session-restore excluded-application list work on Wayland. These changes illustrate continued usability and platform work after the larger 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2 feature waves.

How to try Plasma 6 safely
KDE described booting a Plasma live image from a USB disk as an easy way to try Plasma 6.1. A suitable drive you already own is enough; buying one is optional. A live session lets you check display detection, graphics performance, touchpad gestures, HDR behavior, tablet mapping and application compatibility before changing an installed system.
- Obtain a Plasma live image from a Linux distribution that ships the release you want to evaluate.
- Write the image to a USB disk using the distribution’s documented image-writing method.
- Boot the test computer from that USB disk and select the live-session option.
- Check the specific hardware and applications that matter to you, especially external monitors, tablets, suspend/resume and remote access.
- If the live session works well, review your distribution’s upgrade or installation guidance before replacing the installed system.
KDE also points readers toward computers sold with Plasma preinstalled. That category can reduce setup work, but availability, models and regional support vary; KDE’s announcement does not verify a particular seller or current inventory.
Quick Recap
What Plasma 6 does not promise
- Wayland is the default, not the only session; X11 remains available for users who need it.
- HDR and ICC behavior varies with the monitor, GPU, driver, compositor and application.
- Session restoration does not necessarily reproduce every application’s previous state.
- KDE’s published search percentages are reported figures, not independent benchmarks.
- Later release roundups such as the 6.3 post are selected highlights, not complete changelogs.
