What happened in the Kawasaki breach?
In a notice dated December 28, 2020, Kawasaki Heavy Industries said an internal audit uncovered an unexpected connection from its office in Thailand to a server in Japan. The company cut communications between that office and Japan and investigated further access. It then reported unauthorized access to Japanese servers from overseas sites in Indonesia, the Philippines, and the United States. Kawasaki’s incident notice is the primary account of the company’s findings.
Kawasaki said the investigation was difficult because the unauthorized access used advanced technology that left no trace. Its notice did not identify an attacker, motive, malware, or a specific vulnerability. Those details remain unestablished in the public account.
Was Kawasaki customer data stolen?
Kawasaki’s notice said investigators confirmed “a possibility that information of unknown content may have been leaked to a third party.” It also said: “However, at the present time, we have found no evidence of leaking information including personal information to external parties.” These statements are not a confirmation that data was stolen: the company disclosed a possibility while reporting that its investigation had found no evidence of leakage.

Kawasaki said it was contacting customers who might have been affected individually. The notice and contemporaneous reporting do not name those customers or give a count of affected customers, people, or records. Contacting potentially affected customers does not establish that their information was exfiltrated.
What did Kawasaki do in response?
- It severed communications between the Thailand office and Japan after finding the unexpected connection, then investigated access to other Japanese servers.
- It tightened access restrictions and increased monitoring of access from overseas offices, according to its December 2020 notice.
- It assessed approximately 29,000 terminals across Japan and overseas-office networks where incidents might have occurred, SecurityWeek reported on December 29, 2020. This was the number assessed—not a count of terminals confirmed compromised. SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous report describes the assessment.
- On November 1, 2020, Kawasaki established a Cyber Security Group under the direct control of the company president.
- By the end of November 2020, communications between affected overseas offices and the Japan office had been restored. Kawasaki said it had observed no further unauthorized access since August 2020. These are statements in its 2020 notice, not a claim about the company’s present-day security status.
