K7 Mémoire is a Sanity Challenge Path Two project by Chaminade Dondah Adjolou of Lomé, Togo. It presents family oral histories as tapes on a virtual radio deck rather than as a conventional list of posts. The live demo is designed to make memories feel like something to tune in to; it is not yet a service for recording or uploading family audio.

What is K7 Mémoire?

K7 Mémoire is an oral-memory archive interface built around a simple premise: family history in Lomé often travels by voice before it reaches the page. Instead of placing stories in a feed or card grid, the project turns Sanity content into tapes that visitors can tune, filter, and play.

The project’s visual language borrows from cassette decks and radio equipment: an FM-style dial, mood filters, reels, a counter, VU meters, a rolling transcript, and a kente stripe. These details are more than decoration. They give readers a tactile-feeling way to browse and listen to stories while keeping the underlying archive organized as structured content.

Can you preserve family memories with it?

The project demonstrates one useful part of preservation: giving oral histories a consistent structure and a place where people can discover them. Its two Sanity document types separate each story from the person telling it, while allowing the interface to bring the related information together at display time.

Stories and narrators

A story, labeled “Bande” in the Studio, can include a title, slug, narrator reference, place, era, transcript, tags, mood, and optional audioUrl. A narrator, labeled “Narrateur,” holds a name, a short bio of up to 280 characters, and an optional photo with a hotspot. The narrator’s name and bio live with the narrator record rather than being copied into each story.

A shared GROQ projection joins the narrator’s details to each story when the app reads the content. The project uses the same query shape for the Sanity Content Lake and its local seed documents, so demo mode follows the same content model rather than introducing a separate set of sample fields.

*[_type == "story"] | order(era asc) {
  _id,
  title,
  "slug": slug.current,
  place,
  era,
  mood,
  tags,
  audioUrl,
  transcript,
  "narratorName": narrator->name,
  "narratorBio": narrator->bio,
  "narratorPhoto": narrator->photo.asset->url
}

The submission reports that the seed drawer contains four narrators and eight stories. Those are project-specific demo counts, not a measure of the archive’s scale or of oral-history collections generally.

What happens when you play a tape?

Visitors can select a story and use the deck-like controls to move through it. When a story has an audioUrl, the interface can use that audio. In the early demo, there are no audio files, so “play” advances the counter and the transcript provides the listening experience. That distinction matters: the cassette metaphor does not mean the site digitizes or plays recordings that are not there.

The demo also makes some of its technical machinery visible. A service-manual treatment prints the GROQ query in the interface, so editors learning Sanity can see how the displayed stories relate to the content model. The Studio uses Bandes and Voix desks and includes Vision for working with queries.

What is the site built with?

The documented stack is Next.js App Router, TypeScript, Tailwind, next-sanity, Sanity v6, and Vision, with deployment on Vercel. The author describes several implementation choices: creating the Next.js app in a subdirectory before moving it to the repository root, using tsx --test after encountering Vitest peer-dependency friction, and adding an alias in next.config.ts to address a Turbopack production issue involving the swr package’s react-server export. Studio was placed behind a client boundary to keep it out of the React Server Components graph.

When the first environment lacked Sanity credentials, the project shipped a labeled demo mode backed by seed documents. An empty Content Lake is shown as an open tray; a failed query produces an error instead of silently inventing tapes. Those choices help distinguish an empty archive from a broken connection.

What the demo does not do yet

K7 Mémoire is currently a structured oral-memory interface, not a recording service. The early demo does not include family audio, and the project describes real recordings as a future addition. Anyone considering a similar archive should treat permission, consent, and the handling of sensitive family stories as part of the product design—not as problems solved by a cassette-themed interface.

The author’s roadmap calls for adding real family recordings with consent-conscious, low-friction UX; expanding the places and eras represented as the Content Lake grows; and building a “donate a tape” flow that creates a draft story in Studio. Another proposed addition is Vision-assisted querying from the service manual to help editors learn GROQ. These are plans, not features established in the current demo.

What K7 Mémoire shows about oral-history websites

The project is a compact example of how a familiar physical object can shape digital discovery without replacing a sound archive’s underlying content model. Its strongest idea is the pairing of a playful deck metaphor with explicit structured data: visitors get a distinctive way to browse, while editors work with linked story and narrator records.

For anyone adapting the idea, the practical decisions are separate from the aesthetic one: decide whether the archive will hold transcripts, audio, or both; define how narrators and stories relate; and establish consent and provenance practices before inviting people to contribute recordings. K7 Mémoire points toward that workflow, but its present demo remains transcript-led.
