Spoilers through manga chapter 271 and the added pages in Volume 30: Sukuna is defeated and separated from Megumi, Gojo remains dead, and Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara reunite for another curse investigation. The ending chooses continuation over a clean reset: the surviving students carry grief and damage into ordinary work, while the sealed image of Sukuna’s finger leaves a reminder that danger has not disappeared.
What happens in Jujutsu Kaisen’s final chapter?
Chapter 271 moves the series away from the scale of the Sukuna battle and back to a manageable assignment. Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki are together again, investigating a smaller curse. That choice is the chapter’s main structural statement: defeating the strongest immediate threat does not end the work of protecting people. Their lives continue through cases, conversations, and decisions that are important without being apocalyptic.
Sukuna has been defeated and is no longer controlling Megumi’s body. The victory is not presented as a magical restoration of everything that existed before the Shibuya and Culling Game tragedies. Megumi returns to agency, but he has lost Tsumiki and has endured the violation of having his body used. Nobara comes back into the trio’s working rhythm, yet the people they were at the start of the story cannot simply be recovered.

The closing image of Sukuna’s finger is a coda, not a resurrection announcement. The object is still recognizable and sealed, preserving the possibility that cursed danger can leave artifacts behind. At the same time, the characters have moved forward, so the finger no longer dictates every choice they make.
#1 Best Overall
Who defeats Sukuna?
Sukuna’s defeat is a collective achievement rather than a single-character execution. Yuji is central because he survives the confrontation, reaches Megumi, and refuses to accept Sukuna’s belief that domination and isolation are the only honest forms of strength. Megumi’s return of control is essential to separating Sukuna from the body he occupied. The wider cast’s sacrifices and support make that final opening possible.
Yuji’s final position toward Sukuna gives the victory its moral meaning. He can recognize that Sukuna is a person with choices and still refuse to excuse mass murder and cruelty. Yuji offers an alternative based on relationships and mutual responsibility; Sukuna rejects it. The defeat therefore closes the immediate threat without turning Sukuna into a secretly virtuous or misunderstood hero.
Is Gojo really dead?
Yes. Satoru Gojo remains dead, and the ending does not provide a literal resurrection or a last-minute restoration. His absence is part of the story’s final handoff. Gojo was the unmatched teacher whose strength made the future seem dependent on one person. After his death, Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, and their peers must operate as a network rather than wait for a single strongest sorcerer to solve every crisis.

Gojo’s legacy appears through what his students do, not through his physical return. Their ability to keep working together is evidence that his teaching mattered, while their disagreements and independent choices show that they are not merely copies of him.
What happens to Yuji after the final battle?
Yuji begins the series prepared to die if that would protect other people. By the ending, he can imagine a future in which he keeps living, evaluates what happened, and chooses his actions for himself. He is no longer defined only as Sukuna’s vessel. He is a sorcerer, a friend, and someone capable of setting a moral boundary without abandoning compassion.
That change explains why Yuji’s response to Sukuna matters as much as the physical victory. His empathy is not forgiveness, and it is not surrender. He refuses to become cruel simply because cruelty hurt him. The final investigation shows him practicing that principle in ordinary circumstances, where helping people requires patience rather than a spectacular sacrifice.
What happens to Megumi after Sukuna?
Megumi survives possession and regains control of his life. The manga gives him reunion and forward movement, but not an instant cure for everything he has experienced. Tsumiki’s death, Sukuna’s use of his body, and the damage of the final conflict remain part of his history.

Friends can reach him and create the conditions for rescue, yet Megumi must decide to re-enter life. The final chapter’s return to fieldwork presents that decision as a process rather than a speech: he is present, working with Yuji and Nobara, and taking responsibility for what comes next.
Does Nobara come back?
Yes. Nobara is present with Yuji and Megumi in the final chapter, restoring the original trio’s chemistry. Her return prevents the first-year group from being defined only by absence and allows the ending to show banter, coordination, and shared purpose again.
The collected final volume adds further Nobara-focused material, including family and aftermath context. Those pages expand how readers understand her position after the main battle, but they do not change the central outcome: Sukuna is defeated, Megumi is free, and the trio continues working.
Why does the last panel show Sukuna’s finger?
The finger functions as a visual reminder rather than a plot reset. It remains sealed and identifiable, so the world still contains cursed objects and unresolved hazards. The image refuses to claim that grief, curses, or institutional failures vanished when Sukuna fell.
Its meaning depends on the contrast between object and people. Earlier, Sukuna’s fingers organized the story around fear of eventual resurrection. In the final image, the characters’ lives have advanced beyond that singular obsession. The old danger leaves a trace, but it no longer determines every decision. The ending therefore leaves room for future threats without undoing the resolution readers have just witnessed.
How the major character arcs resolve
| Character | Starting position | Ending position | What the resolution means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yuji Itadori | Willing to die to protect others and defined publicly as Sukuna’s vessel. | Alive, able to choose a future, and still committed to helping people. | Compassion can coexist with boundaries; survival itself becomes an act of agency. |
| Megumi Fushiguro | A guarded sorcerer whose sense of duty is tied to saving specific people. | Free from Sukuna and moving back into life with his friends. | Rescue opens the door, but recovery requires his own decision to live forward. |
| Nobara Kugisaki | A fiercely independent first-year whose presence defines the trio’s balance. | Reunited with Yuji and Megumi and given additional aftermath material in Volume 30. | The original team is restored without pretending its losses never happened. |
| Sukuna | A force that treats power, appetite, and isolation as the whole truth of existence. | Defeated and separated from Megumi, having rejected Yuji’s alternative. | Strength without attachment ends in self-imposed isolation, not transcendence. |
| Satoru Gojo | The overwhelmingly powerful teacher on whom the jujutsu world relies. | Dead, with his students carrying the future. | Responsibility transfers from one exceptional protector to a cooperating generation. |
What the ending says about Sukuna and Yuji
The final exchange distinguishes understanding from absolution. Yuji can see Sukuna as a human being capable of making choices, but that recognition does not erase the consequences of those choices. Sukuna’s refusal to accept connection confirms the series’ central contrast: he chooses appetite and domination even when another path is offered.
Yuji’s mercy is therefore active rather than passive. He does not deny the harm Sukuna caused, and he does not adopt Sukuna’s worldview to punish him. The story treats that refusal as a form of strength. A person can acknowledge another’s humanity while firmly rejecting that person’s actions and values.
Why the final mission is deliberately small
The last investigation has an ordinary scale because the series wants to show what victory is for. A gigantic battle can prove who is stronger; a routine case shows whether people are willing to keep helping after the spectacle ends. Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara return to the practical work of finding and dealing with curses, which makes their continued cooperation visible.

The chapter does not claim that curses, grief, or institutional problems have vanished. Instead, it places change in the hands of people who can make better choices inside an imperfect world. The future is maintained through repeated acts of care, not guaranteed by a single final victory.
Is the Jujutsu Kaisen ending happy or bad?
It is hopeful but deliberately unfinished. The trio is together, Megumi is no longer possessed, Sukuna’s immediate threat is over, and Yuji can continue living with purpose. Those are meaningful gains, not a denial of the losses that made them possible.
Readers who want every death reversed, every institution repaired, and every trauma neatly healed will find the ending abrupt or incomplete. Readers who view survival as something that must include grief may find its restraint more convincing. The final finger and the continuing curse work preserve uncertainty, while the characters’ choices provide enough closure to show that the old cycle does not control them completely.

The answer depends on whether the surviving characters’ ongoing work feels like a credible response to their losses rather than a reset.
- Is Yuji’s mercy satisfying? Some readers read it as moral strength; others think Sukuna deserved a more punitive conclusion.
- Does Gojo’s death accomplish a real handoff? The ending argues that it does by showing students acting together instead of waiting for one strongest sorcerer.
- Does the small final mission provide closure? It can feel abrupt if one expects another grand battle, but it is thematically consistent with a life that continues after the supposed final crisis.
What Volume 30 adds
Shueisha’s official catalog identifies Volume 30 as the final collected volume. It includes chapter 271 and substantial newly drawn material, with a print release dated December 25, 2024. VIZ lists chapter 271 as an official Shonen Jump chapter, and the official Jujutsu Kaisen site records the manga’s serialization from March 2018 through its conclusion in September 2024 after six and a half years.
Contemporary coverage of the added pages describes epilogue sections centered on Yuko Ozawa, Uraume, Nobara, and Panda. These sections are supplementary closure: they broaden selected character aftermaths and provide additional context, but they do not alter the central ending of Sukuna’s defeat, Megumi’s recovery of control, or the trio’s continuation.
Yuko Ozawa
Yuko’s epilogue presence extends the story’s interest in ordinary relationships beyond the battlefield. Her inclusion reinforces that the characters’ futures are measured not only by combat status but also by the people and communities they remain connected to.
Uraume
Uraume’s material adds perspective on the aftermath surrounding Sukuna’s side of the conflict. It supplements the main resolution rather than reopening Sukuna’s defeat.
Nobara and Panda
The additional Nobara and Panda pages give selected survivors more room to exist after the climactic fight. They are best read as character-focused coda material, not as a new final arc.
Publication scope and spoiler boundary
This explanation covers the manga through chapter 271 and the newly drawn pages collected in Volume 30. The anime adaptation may not yet have reached these events, and its future presentation can differ in pacing or emphasis. Readers following only the anime should treat every section above as a full manga spoiler.
The ending in one sentence
Jujutsu Kaisen ends by defeating Sukuna without resurrecting Gojo or erasing the characters’ suffering, then entrusting a changed but still dangerous world to Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, and the people willing to keep helping one another.
