JUICE and Europa Clipper are complementary spacecraft with different priorities. The European Space Agency’s JUICE will survey Jupiter and its icy moons, then enter orbit around Ganymede. NASA’s Europa Clipper is built to investigate Europa through repeated close flybys from orbit around Jupiter. Neither mission is designed to detect life, and neither is a lander.
How do JUICE and Europa Clipper differ?
The main difference is scope: JUICE studies Jupiter’s wider system, including Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa, while Europa Clipper concentrates its science campaign on Europa. Both examine conditions relevant to habitability, but NASA says Clipper carries no life-seeking instruments.

What questions will the missions investigate?
JUICE: how Jupiter’s moons and environment fit together
ESA frames JUICE’s central theme as the emergence of habitable worlds around gas giants. The spacecraft will characterize the oceans, icy shells, compositions, surfaces, and activity of Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto. It will also study Jupiter’s atmosphere, magnetic environment, rings, and other satellites. Ganymede receives particular attention because it is JUICE’s final orbital destination and has distinctive interactions with Jupiter’s environment. (ESA)
Europa Clipper: whether Europa has potentially habitable environments
Clipper will investigate Europa’s ice shell, possible subsurface ocean, surface geology, chemistry, exchange between the surface and ocean, and signs of recent activity such as possible plumes. Its purpose is to assess habitability conditions, not to establish whether organisms are present. NASA explicitly notes that the spacecraft has no life-seeking instruments. (NASA instrument page)

What instruments will they use?
JUICE’s 10 instruments and PRIDE experiment
ESA describes JUICE as carrying 10 instruments, complemented by the PRIDE radio-science experiment. Together, they combine remote observations, measurements of the moons’ interiors and surfaces, and direct study of particles and fields around Jupiter.
- Remote sensing: JANUS is a camera; MAJIS an imaging spectrometer; UVS an ultraviolet spectrograph; and SWI a submillimetre-wave instrument. These observe the moons and Jupiter across different wavelengths.
- Geophysics: GALA is a laser altimeter; RIME a radar sounder for surface and subsurface investigation; and 3GM a radio-science package for studying atmospheres and gravity fields.
- Particles and fields: PEP studies particles, J-MAG measures magnetic fields, and RPWI studies radio and plasma waves using electric- and magnetic-field sensors and Langmuir probes.
- PRIDE: Ground-based very-long-baseline interferometry helps improve knowledge of JUICE’s position and velocity.
This mix lets JUICE compare surface features, subsurface structure, gravity, and the space environment across several targets. (ESA mission overview)
Europa Clipper’s nine science instruments and gravity/radio science
NASA lists nine science instruments, which work together during Europa flybys, plus a gravity and radio-science experiment that uses the spacecraft’s telecommunications system.
- Mapping and heat: EIS provides wide- and narrow-angle visible-light cameras for color and stereoscopic mapping; E-THEMIS maps temperature and thermal features in infrared.
- Surface and atmospheric chemistry: Europa-UVS and MISE study ultraviolet and infrared signatures of atmospheric gases, surface materials, ices, salts, organics, and hotspots.
- Ice and interior: REASON uses ice-penetrating radar to examine the shell, subsurface structure, topography, and possible plumes. ECM and PIMS measure magnetic fields and plasma to help constrain the ocean, ice shell, and ionized environment. Gravity and radio measurements help infer Europa’s internal structure.
- Gas and dust: MASPEX analyzes atmospheric or plume gases, while SUDA analyzes dust grains, providing clues about chemistry and exchange between the surface and ocean.
As with JUICE, the measurements are designed to characterize environments and materials. No single instrument can prove that life exists. (NASA instrument page; NASA mission overview)

Where will each spacecraft go?
JUICE travels through the system and ends in Ganymede orbit
JUICE launched from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on 14 April 2023 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket. ESA’s plan calls for arrival at Jupiter in July 2031 after gravity-assist flybys, followed by a sequence of moon encounters and an orbital tour of Ganymede. ESA’s mission overview specifies 35 Jovian-moon flybys and 85 m² of solar wings; these are mission specifications, not independently measured results. (ESA mission overview)
Europa Clipper orbits Jupiter and repeatedly flies past Europa
Europa Clipper launched on 14 October 2024 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center. NASA/JPL plans Jupiter orbit insertion for 11 April 2030, followed by a close Ganymede flyby and additional Ganymede and Callisto flybys that help shape the spacecraft’s trajectory. The science campaign is centered on 49 close Europa flybys. (NASA mission overview; NASA mission timeline)
Europa lies in an intense radiation environment. NASA/JPL explains that Clipper’s Jupiter orbit is designed to limit the time it spends in the most hazardous zones while enabling repeated Europa encounters. It does not orbit Europa, and the stated end-of-mission plan is disposal at Ganymede—not a landing on Europa. (NASA/JPL press kit)
When are the missions expected to reach Jupiter and Europa?
All future dates below are planned milestones, not completed events. ESA gives JUICE a nominal science lifetime of four years after its planned July 2031 Jupiter arrival.
