Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) both involve grappling on the feet and on the ground, but competition and training often emphasize different parts of that game. Judo puts particular weight on throws and the control that follows; BJJ commonly spends more time on ground position, escapes, and submissions. Neither art is limited to one phase. For a beginner, the best choice is usually the nearby club with a welcoming beginner class, workable schedule and cost, and training you want to return to.

How judo and BJJ differ in practice

The clearest distinction is emphasis, not an absolute division of techniques. Judo teaches gripping, balance-breaking, throws, and groundwork. BJJ teaches takedowns and standing grappling as well as extensive ground control and submission work. How much time a class gives each phase depends on the instructor and club.

Dimension Judo Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Typical competition emphasis Throws and the resulting control or groundwork are central to contest strategy. The International Judo Federation (IJF) says referees assess the technique, continuity of action, and landing. IJF scoring explanation Ground position, control, and submissions are prominent in common competition formats. Scoring, legal techniques, penalties, and match procedures depend on the event ruleset; the IBJJF resource list includes Rule Book v6.0.
Standing skills Grip fighting, off-balancing, and throws are characteristic skills. Competition rules limit how techniques may be used. Takedowns and standing exchanges can be trained, but a school may devote more or less class time to them.
Ground skills Groundwork and transitions after a throw are part of judo; it is not throws only. Ground positional control, escapes, and submissions usually receive substantial attention. Permitted submissions vary by ruleset, age, and belt division.
Clothing Judo practitioners wear a judogi. IJF requirements apply to IJF competition. Gi classes use a BJJ gi, while no-gi classes use other training clothing. IBJJF publishes its own uniform rules; ask the academy what it requires.

The final row is a guide to broad technical emphases, not a claim that either art teaches only those skills. A local club’s curriculum can differ from the common competition emphasis.

Judo scoring and current rules

In the IJF’s detailed scoring explanation, officials consider whether a recognized judo technique was used, whether the action was continuous, and how the opponent landed. The explanation was updated on 25 March 2023, so it is helpful for understanding the framework, not a substitute for the latest complete competition regulations.

Judo rules change. The IJF’s 13 December 2024 announcement describes changes for the international cycle beginning in 2025, including a yuko score and changes involving grips and leg attacks. The IJF documents index lists a 2026 Sport and Organisation Rules version. For a particular event, check the applicable current rules and its age, division, and competition requirements; do not assume a past explanation covers every current detail.

BJJ rules depend on the event

There is no single competition ruleset that applies to every BJJ school and tournament. The IBJJF’s official rules resources list Rule Book v6.0 and an update guide, and its rules-course page directs learners to the rulebook. A claim about a legal technique, score, penalty, or match procedure should be tied to the specific event’s rules, version, and division. Training at a BJJ academy does not by itself mean you will compete under IBJJF rules.

Which should you try first?

Choose based on the practice you are curious about and the club you can realistically attend, rather than assuming one art is universally easier, safer, more effective, or better for self-defense. Your goals and the quality and fit of local instruction matter. Use a trial class to assess the experience directly.

  • Try judo if you are especially interested in learning throws, gripping, balance, and standing exchanges, while also being open to groundwork.
  • Try BJJ if you are especially interested in ground positions, escapes, control, and submissions, while recognizing that standing grappling and takedowns can also be part of training.
  • Try both if both are accessible and you are undecided. Compare the actual beginner classes, not just the sports’ reputations.

What to ask before joining a club

  1. Is this class intended for beginners? Ask whether newcomers can observe or take an introductory session, and what to wear for the first visit.
  2. What is the full cost? Compare fees and any required equipment costs rather than looking only at a headline membership price.
  3. Does the schedule work in real life? Consider class times, travel time, and how often you can attend consistently.
  4. How are new students paired and coached? Ask about class size, instructor attention, and how beginners are matched with partners.
  5. How does the club manage intensity and safety? Ask how partners communicate, how students signal that they are stopping, and how instructors handle a mismatch in experience or intensity.
  6. What do students actually practice? Ask how the class divides time between standing work and groundwork, since curriculum varies from one club to another.

Wait to buy a uniform until the club confirms it

Ask the instructor whether you need a uniform for your first class and which kind the academy accepts. A judo judogi is not automatically suitable for a BJJ school or for its competition rules. The IJF lists judogi rules, and IBJJF maintains separate uniform information. Confirm the club’s requirements, sizing, and whether competition-specific standards matter before purchasing.
