JPEG XL (JXL) is a modern image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. It supports lossy and lossless images, animation, transparency, HDR and progressive coding, and can reversibly transcode existing JPEGs. Whether a website can use it as its only image format is another matter: as of October 3, 2026, browser support is still changing, so serve a fallback and test your audience’s browsers.
What is JPEG XL?
JPEG XL is a raster-image coding system designed for responsive web delivery and professional photography. The JPEG Committee’s overview describes it as ISO/IEC 18181, with an extensible file format that can store metadata such as EXIF and JUMBF alongside image data and JPEG reconstruction information. It is a format and bitstream standard, not a guarantee that every decoder, editor, browser, or service implements every capability. Its design balances image fidelity, encoding and decoding speed, and compression ratio; results depend on the image and settings.

Lossy and lossless coding
JXL can encode images with lossy compression or preserve image data losslessly. That makes it relevant both to ordinary web images and to workflows where retaining exact image information matters. Lossless does not mean every JXL file will be smaller than every competing format.

Reversible JPEG transcoding
A JPEG can be transcoded into JXL in a way that allows the exact original JPEG to be reconstructed. This can support storage migration: keep the JXL version and retain the option to restore the source JPEG without another generation of lossy encoding. This is distinct from decoding a JPEG and re-encoding its pixels as a new lossy image.
Progressive rendering
Progressive coding can let a decoder show an image that improves as more data arrives, rather than waiting for the complete file. The format’s capability does not guarantee that a browser uses it in this way: MDN says Safari waits until the JPEG XL download is complete before rendering it.

Rich image content and color
The feature set includes animation, alpha transparency, layers, thumbnails, high bit depth, wide-gamut color, and HDR. Support for those features varies by software implementation; do not assume a browser handles all JXL content in the same way.
Software decoding
JPEG XL is designed to be encoded and decoded in software without requiring additional hardware acceleration, including on mobile devices. Actual performance still depends on the implementation, device, image, and workload. JPEG Committee: JPEG XL overview

Where JPEG XL can be useful
- Archiving or migrating JPEG collections: reversible transcoding can reduce storage while preserving the ability to reconstruct the original JPEG.
- Lossless imagery: JPEG XL is worth testing where exact preservation matters and file size is important.
- Images that benefit from progressive display: the coding feature can help when the decoder supports progressive rendering; verify implementation behavior rather than assuming it.
- Photography and rich-color workflows: its lossy and lossless modes, high bit depth, wide gamut, and HDR support offer options for image pipelines that need those properties.
- Animated or transparent assets: the format includes animation and alpha-channel support, subject to tool and browser compatibility.
JPEG XL versus AVIF and WebP
There is no universal file-size winner. In an August 2026 comparison, Mozilla developer Jake Archibald found AVIF smaller in the cited lossy examples, while JPEG XL was smaller in the cited lossless examples. Mozilla’s figures show why comparisons should match your use case. The cited lossy photo and screenshot files favored AVIF for size; the cited lossless photo and screenshot files favored JPEG XL over AVIF. Archibald characterizes JPEG XL as strong for lossless imagery, progressive rendering, and further compressing JPEGs without quality loss, while AVIF is strong for web-quality photography and images mixing sharp edges with flat areas. Measure a representative set of your own images at a visual quality that works for your audience, and consider decode cost, image type, density, and browser support as well as bytes.

JPEG XL browser support as of October 3, 2026
Support is in transition. The following status reflects MDN and browser-team announcements available on October 3, 2026; it is not a promise that every user on a browser family can display JXL. Check current compatibility before relying on it. MDN: Image file type and format guide

Can you use JPEG XL on your website?
Yes, if you provide a fallback for browsers that cannot display it and test the result in the browsers your visitors use. While support is not universal, MDN recommends alternatives such as AVIF, WebP, or JPEG in a <picture> element.
Serve JXL with a fallback
For example, offer JXL first and retain a broadly supported fallback source. The browser selects the first format it supports; the img source remains the fallback.

</picture>Use accurate alternative text for the image’s purpose. For responsive art direction or multiple sizes, provide corresponding srcset and sizes values for each source rather than serving an unnecessarily large file to every viewport. Test on real browsers and devices, including the fallback path.
Validate the image pipeline
- Confirm that your encoder produces the intended JXL variant and that your image server sends it with the correct content type,
image/jxl. - Check that the fallback files exist and load if JXL is unsupported or the JXL request fails.
- Compare lossy outputs at equivalent visual quality and test lossless output separately; a quality number from one encoder is not necessarily comparable to another’s.
- Measure representative photographs, screenshots, graphics, and high-density assets. Results from one image cannot predict your site-wide savings.
- Test the actual client population and delivery path, including content negotiation or caching behavior if your system varies responses by browser.
Tools for working with JPEG XL
JXL support is available across software categories, but the project-maintained support inventory can change. It lists tools and integrations including ImageMagick, GIMP, Adobe Camera Raw, and Squoosh, alongside libraries, viewers, and operating-system plugins.
