Cook is now executive chairman, while Ternus has joined Apple’s board and Arthur Levinson has become lead independent director.
When did John Ternus become Apple CEO?
Apple announced the succession on April 20, 2026, and Ternus assumed the CEO role on September 1, 2026. Cook remained CEO through the summer before the change took effect.
Who is John Ternus?
Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team as senior vice president in 2021. Reuters reported that he oversaw teams working on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods.
His route to the top job is rooted in engineering and product development. Cook, by contrast, led Apple for 15 years before the transition, with the CEO role encompassing company-wide operations and external relationships as well as product decisions.

What happens to Tim Cook and Apple’s board?
Cook became executive chairman and is expected to assist with certain company matters, including engaging with policymakers around the world. Levinson, previously Apple’s non-executive chairman, became lead independent director. Ternus joined the board on the same day he became CEO.
Cook described Ternus as having “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.” Ternus said he was “profoundly grateful for this opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward.” Both statements were made in Apple’s April 20, 2026 announcement.
What will Ternus inherit from Cook’s tenure?

Artificial intelligence
The Associated Press identified competition in artificial intelligence as a major test for Ternus. The CEO must set the company’s direction in a field where Apple’s product strategy and ability to compete will be closely watched.
Supply chains and tariffs
Apple’s global supply chain and exposure to tariffs are also immediate concerns identified by the Associated Press. Managing those issues requires decisions that connect product engineering with manufacturing, costs, and geopolitical risk.

Government and political relationships
Apple must maintain relationships with political figures and policymakers in markets around the world. Cook’s executive-chairman role includes engaging policymakers, preserving a channel of experience during the leadership change.
Moving from engineering leadership to company-wide leadership
Ternus’s hardware background gives him deep experience with Apple’s products, but the CEO remit is broader than engineering. It also calls for leadership across the company and sustained engagement with employees, investors, suppliers, governments, and customers. His performance will be judged not only by product execution but also by how he handles AI, supply constraints, and Apple’s wider relationships.
