A field can block creation even when it is hidden from the form. Correct the configuration and retry the same creation flow; for a portal failure, verify as a customer.
Jira Cloud administration screens are being updated progressively, so navigation and labels can vary between sites.
Why a Jira Cloud default value can block creation
A default is not automatically valid just because it was valid when configured. The field’s active context must apply to the affected space or project and work type, and the configured value must still be selectable and valid for that field type. For example, a User Picker default that points to an inactive or removed user can prevent creation. A custom field with no valid options in its applicable context can also fail validation.
The field named in an error may not appear on the form. A hidden field in the applicable field configuration can still block creation if its default is invalid or missing. Separately, a required field that is absent from the create screen or JSM request form can cause a failure that the user cannot resolve on that form.

Find the field Jira is rejecting
- Reproduce the failure with your browser’s developer tools open. In most browsers, open developer tools from the browser menu or with the relevant keyboard shortcut, then select the Console tab.
- Look for a validation error. If the Console does not identify the cause, select Network, retry creation, and inspect the failed HTTP 400 request and its response body.
- Record the field ID—often in a form such as
customfield_XXXXX—and the error message. Also note the affected space or project, work type, and whether you were creating a regular work item or submitting a JSM portal request. - Resolve the custom-field ID to its field name in Jira administration if necessary. Check hidden fields in the applicable field configuration too; the visible form field may not be the only source of the error.

Check the field’s context, default, and options
A custom-field context controls where a field configuration applies and can specify defaults, options, or user filtering. Atlassian explains how to review custom-field contexts and configure a field’s context.

- In Jira administration, open the affected field’s context and default-value settings. Confirm that the active context covers the affected space or project and work type.
- Inspect the default. If it is invalid, no longer selectable, or refers to a removed entity, choose a valid value or clear the default.
- For a field with predefined options, check that the active context contains options. If it does not, use a context that has the intended options or add those options to the context that applies to the affected work item.
- Before editing a context, review its scope. A context may apply across multiple spaces and work types; changing it can affect all of them.
Default-value support and valid values depend on the field type and context. For instance, Atlassian’s instructions for rich-text field defaults cover a particular text-field setup, not every custom field.
If the field is a User Picker
Check whether the default user still exists and is valid for the field. Replace it with a valid user or remove the default if one is not needed. A stale User Picker default can fail validation even when the field is hidden or the person submitting the request does not intend to change it. Align requiredness with screen and request-form visibility
Requiredness and visibility are separate settings. Review whether the field is required in the field configuration and whether it is present on the relevant create screen. Atlassian’s field-configuration guidance states that required fields need to be visible on the create screen.
For JSM, also inspect the request type’s field settings. If the requester must provide the value, make the field available on that request form. If the workflow allows it, provide an appropriate preset where supported or make the field optional. Keep request-type settings and Jira field configuration consistent; a required field missing from the portal form can fail without a useful message.

Screens and field configurations control different aspects of field behavior, and conflicting settings can make a field appear missing or unusable. If a field is not present where expected, use Atlassian’s field-finding guidance and check the context, field configuration, screen, and applicable work type rather than changing the default alone.
Match the symptom to the first checks

Verify the fix in the same workflow
- Retry with the same space or project, work type, and request type that failed. A successful test in a different creation flow does not establish that the affected one is fixed.
- For a customer portal issue, submit through the portal in a private or incognito browser window while signed in as a customer account. An administrator’s view does not confirm what a customer can see or submit.
- If creation still fails, inspect the new response and address the field or validation message it identifies. More than one configuration issue may be involved.

What to know about changing field administration
Atlassian is progressively transitioning Jira Cloud administration from field configurations and schemes toward unified field schemes; the newer interface is not necessarily available on every site. Labels and navigation can therefore differ. Follow the configuration concepts—context, default, requiredness, and form visibility—even if your site’s menus use different wording. Because a context change can affect every space and work type in its scope, confirm that scope before saving.
