He spent all 18 of his NFL seasons with Atlanta and was selected to six Pro Bowls. The Falcons did not announce a cause of death, according to the Associated Press report published by NFL.com.
Van Note’s 18-season Falcons career
Atlanta drafted Van Note from the University of Kentucky in 1969. He initially joined the Falcons as a linebacker, then moved to center at the request of head coach Norm Van Brocklin. He won the starting job in 1970 and remained with the team through his retirement in 1986, making him one of the franchise’s defining long-serving players.
The Falcons’ obituary and Ring of Honor profile credit him with 246 games played and 225 starts. The AP report says he started 226 of those 246 games; the sources differ by one on his starts, so neither figure should be treated as an agreed total. The Falcons also identify his 155 consecutive games as a club record and his 18 seasons as the most in team history.
Six Pro Bowls and a place in team history
Van Note was selected to six Pro Bowls and named AP second-team All-Pro twice, according to the Falcons. His six Pro Bowl selections tied defensive end Claude Humphrey for the most by a Falcons player. His record-setting consecutive-games streak and long tenure measure durability; the Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections reflect recognition of his play.

After retiring as a player, he worked as a Falcons color commentator and contributed to Atlanta sports radio. Kentucky Athletics says he served as an analyst for UK Radio Network games from 1994 to 2001 and also called games for Georgia Tech and the Tennessee Oilers. Kentucky athletic director J Batt called him “one of the legends of Kentucky football.” Tom Leach, his former broadcast partner, remembered him as “an elite analyst but even more humble than he was talented in that role.”
