Jaylen Brown is still learning the Philadelphia 76ers’ defensive terminology after moving from Boston. In training camp, he has described the adjustment as more than memorizing new play names: a familiar word can signal a different coverage in Philadelphia, so he must recognize the call and communicate it correctly with teammates.

What Brown is learning about the 76ers’ defense

Brown said Philadelphia and Boston sometimes use the same terminology for different coverages. That makes the key task understanding what a call means in the Sixers’ system and ensuring teammates know their assignments, including when they come out of a timeout or huddle. In his October 1, 2026 report, The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Chris Hine quoted Brown describing the challenge: “Some of the terminology, they use the same words, but it’s a whole different coverage.”

Brown framed the work as a team effort: “Clear communication, identifying coverages and holding each other accountable,” he said. “Getting back on defense as well. So we’ve been working on that. That’ll be a part where, it’s just a whole new system, whole new calls. I gotta like, download my brain to a different algorithm to make sure I’m not calling the wrong stuff. Because the names are different.”

Why defense is the early focus

Hine reported that coach Nick Nurse devoted the first two days of camp to defensive installation. The team began adding some offensive sets and out-of-bounds plays later in the week. Brown said he was less concerned about offense because of the roster’s talent, while identifying defensive communication, coverage recognition, accountability and getting back on defense as areas of emphasis.

“We’re focused on defense for a couple days, and I like that because that’s where the game is going to be won or lost,” Brown said, as quoted in Hine’s October 3, 2026 report.

How Nurse sees the roster’s defensive options

In the October 3 report, Nurse said the roster could give him the personnel to use more of his defensive playbook, while acknowledging that executing those concepts may take time. Using different coverages asks players to recognize situations quickly and communicate; Hine noted that experience, size, athleticism and basketball understanding matter in carrying them out. Nurse also said the team had covered a lot and was emphasizing repetitions so players could become comfortable with the names of the plays.

Tyrese Maxey said Brown had stood out for his communication and willingness to pick up the ball defensively and do what the coach asks. That is an early camp observation, not evidence that the system has already been mastered.

What Brown’s move to Philadelphia looks like off the court

Brown described the move as happening in phases. His belongings were arriving from Boston while he worked on getting his family settled. Hine reported that Brown joined small-group workouts with player-development staff and younger players; Brown said he welcomed questions and the chance to share what he has learned.

Brown singled out Maxey for helping him feel comfortable and welcome, calling him “a great host.” That is Brown’s description of his teammate’s welcome.

The prior-season context—and what it does not prove

Hine’s October 3 report said Philadelphia ranked 17th in defensive efficiency in the preceding season and that Joel Embiid played 38 regular-season games. Those figures provide context for the team’s defensive installation; they do not establish that Brown’s arrival or Nurse’s options will change the 76ers’ results.

What remains unknown

The camp reports describe an adjustment in progress. They do not establish how quickly Brown will internalize Philadelphia’s calls, what his settled role will be once the season begins, or whether the broader set of defensive options will improve performance. Those outcomes remain to be seen in later practices and games.
