In Java’s abstract runtime model, each thread has its own stack of method frames, while a heap shared among threads provides memory for class instances and arrays. A method’s local-variable slot can hold a reference to an object without holding the object itself. These are JVM runtime roles; the specification does not require two distinct, visibly separate physical memory regions.
What is the difference between heap and stack in Java?
| Aspect | JVM stack | Heap |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing | Private to one JVM thread; each thread has its own stack. | Shared among JVM threads. |
| Main role | Holds frames used for method invocation and return. | Runtime area from which memory for class instances and arrays is allocated. |
| What the specification describes | Each frame has a local-variable array, an operand stack, and a reference to the current method’s run-time constant pool. | Stores objects and arrays; the specification does not prescribe a particular internal object structure. |
| Lifetime and reclamation | A frame is created for a method invocation and discarded when the invocation completes, normally or abruptly. | Storage is reclaimed by automatic storage management when the JVM implementation determines it can be reclaimed. |
| Related errors | Exceeding the permitted stack capacity can cause StackOverflowError. Stack creation or expansion can also cause OutOfMemoryError in specified circumstances. |
If the automatic storage management system cannot make enough heap memory available, the JVM throws OutOfMemoryError. |
Oracle’s Java Virtual Machine Specification, Java SE 21 Edition, §2.5.3 puts the heap’s role this way: “The heap is the run-time data area from which memory for all class instances and arrays is allocated.”
What happens to memory during a method call?
- When a thread invokes a method, the JVM creates a frame for that invocation on that thread’s stack.
- The frame provides a local-variable array and an operand stack. The local-variable array holds method parameters and local values; the operand stack is used as the method’s working area for computations.
- A local-variable slot can hold a reference value that refers to an object. The reference and the object are distinct: in the abstract model, the referenced class instance or array is allocated in the heap.
- When the invocation completes, its frame is discarded. This does not necessarily reclaim objects the method referenced: an object’s heap storage is handled through automatic storage management, not by the frame’s end.
This is a model of JVM behavior, not a promise about the exact bits or physical address used to represent a reference.
Are Java objects on the heap and local variables on the stack?
That is a useful shorthand, with an important qualification. The JVM specification assigns class instances and arrays to the heap’s abstract role, and method invocations to frames on per-thread stacks. A local variable may hold a primitive value or a reference value; if it holds a reference, that does not mean the referenced object is inside the local-variable slot.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The specification defines runtime areas rather than a universal physical memory diagram. It does not require that the heap and stacks be contiguous, separately visible regions in a process, nor does it mandate a particular internal object layout. It even permits frames to be heap allocated. So “object on the heap, local reference in a frame” describes the abstract JVM model; it should not be taken as a guarantee about physical placement in every implementation or after internal optimizations.
Is the Java stack shared between threads?
No. Each JVM thread has its own private JVM stack, so a frame belongs to the thread executing that method. The heap, by contrast, is shared among JVM threads. This describes JVM runtime areas; it does not mean every object is automatically safe to access concurrently. How a program coordinates access to shared objects is a separate question from where the JVM allocates them.

What causes StackOverflowError versus OutOfMemoryError?
StackOverflowErrorindicates that a computation requires more JVM stack than the implementation permits. The specification describes this as occurring when computation requires a larger JVM stack than is permitted.OutOfMemoryErrorcan occur when the JVM cannot provide required memory. For heap allocation, the specification associates it with the automatic storage management system being unable to make enough heap available. Stack creation or expansion can also fail with this error in specified circumstances.
These errors identify different resource failures, but the names alone do not diagnose the program’s underlying cause. The specification does not set a universal stack size, heap limit, or garbage-collection algorithm, so those details depend on the JVM implementation and its configuration.

The Java SE 21 JVM specification defines the stack and heap by their roles in the abstract machine. It leaves physical layout, garbage-collection strategy, and many implementation details to JVM implementors. It therefore supports explaining frames, objects, references, and resource errors, but not claims that every Java object always occupies a particular physical region, that stack operations are invariably faster, or that a specific JVM uses a particular memory layout.
